Look at this efulefu. It's people like you that reject your culture and start practicing oyibo culture, calling it civilization. No people on earth that doesn't do one or too inherited stuffs which has no developmental value(''developmental value'' in your words).
Let me give you just one example. In the highly developed England, nobody eats food again in any function ones the queen has stopped eating, you dare not walk in front of the queen and ones you see the queen drop her bag on the table in any gathering, everyone stands up and leave,if you are having a marriage ceremony, the bride must wear white and so on..... These things are cultures of the English people which they inherited and still practice. If you go to India, China, America, France, Japan and so on. You see their culture but down here we claim more civilized than civilization.

Don't be too hard on him.
If he happens to live outside Nigeria, he will swallow his words cos the intensity with which he will like these our archaic cultures will amaze him cheesy
It happened to many including yours truly.

cheesy Mbano.

I had a neighbor that told me about it. It is as expensive as a wedding.

Any man in that place that didn't do it when he is of age, his mates become his "senior" and he has less rights in their village.
Rubbish angry..Money stops nonsense. Village people and their backward mentality. Little wonder they are where they are, waiting for alms.

Firstly, What is Iwa Akwa?

The Iwa akwa, also known as 'cloth wearing', means an initiation into manhood. It is a ceremony that entails the passage of a young boy transforming into a full- fledged man; and it is highly valued, respected and usually practiced by the people of Ehime Mbano, Ihitte Uboma, Obowo and Ahiazu Mbaise Local government areas, all in Imo state. The participants are usually mates of a certain age grade. The wearing of cloths has a symbolic representation. It is a symbol of coverage. It is assumed that they (initiates) were naked before but they are now covered.

I wouldn't want to stress you with too much details as a Nairalander by name Igbodefender had once opened an educative thread on "Iwa Akwa". https://www.nairaland.com/5001028/iwa-akwa-festival-igbo-initiation

Before I forget. The person "Wearing the cloth" is a senior friend, cousin, colleague and buddy. He's just almost everything to me. So base on those settings, I couldn't help but had to forfeit my programs just to be there for him.

This very ceremony happened in Ihitte Uboma LGA, IMO State.

Please help with audience.

You mean these old men are just coming of age? I would think this ceremony is for teenagers or younger boys like 15. Or do you mean these ones could only recently afford to be a part of the ceremony? Nice tradition anyway. I don’t think they suffered enough though grin.

U want them to be severally flogged? cheesy

I think the tradition might be for those who have reached the age to marry.
There is a yardstick and benchmark for this I guess.

I want to see masquerades, why are Igbo masquerades going into extinct

I love watching masquerades dance a lot, op try and post pictures of their masquerade because I am sure masquerade danced during the festival.

Lalasticlala try and be moving masquerade dance threads to front page like snake threads too, some of us love masquerade more than you love snakes you know lipsrsealed
Masquerades can go extinct, it is gradually loosing its traditional meaning. These days, masquerades are just traditional SARS extorting money anyhow angry.

Only if they can stick only to their dancing things would have been better.

CAPSLOCKED:

LEAVE THE IGBOS AND THEIR MENTALITY THEY HOLD SO DEAR, ALWAYS THINKING THEY'RE THE BEST TRIBE THAT STANDS OUT. YOU'LL OFTEN HEAR THEM, WHEN NOT BRAGGING ABOUT DEVELOPMENT AND WEALTH, TALK ABOUT HOW CHASTE THEIR BRIDES CAN BE. HOW LOYAL THEIR MARRIED WOMEN ARE, AND HOW THEIR CULTURE IS THIS OR THAT. I DON'T KNOW HOW THEY MANAGE TO SOUND LIKE THAT EVEN WITH REALITY STANDING IN THEIR FACES.
I ALWAYS BASH THE IGBOS IF YOU FOLLOW ME CLOSELY, NOT THAT I'M TRIBALISTIC. IN FACT, I'M AWKA MADE BUT YOU'LL NEVER KNOW BECAUSE I DISAGREE WITH EVERYTHING THAT DOESN'T AGREE WITH COMMON SENSE. THESE ASPECTS OF CULTURE LIKE CANING BOYS AND SELLING WOMEN LIKE MARKET WARES SHOULD BE DUMPED THE SAME WAY WE DISCARDED THE CULTURE OF KILLING TWINS, MARRYING VIRGINS STRICTLY, AND POLYGAMY.

who told u that they sell women? Are u okay? how much did my dad spend to marry my dad? Come to my village and see how much u will spend to marry a wife. I dont know where some of u came up with this rubbish. Even among other tribes, there are families that marriage is very expensive. These things are family based and not tribe based. I tire for people like u. In fact, marry from Akwa Ibom is far more expensive with their list than many igbo families. But u have natural hatred for the igbos.

And I hope u also hate Americans becus they also claim that they are the best? Why hate someone praising and bragging about his tribe? Have u sat with an American before? Have u sat with Jews before? Have u sat with a German before? Everyone believe they have the best race, tribe and group, so why must the Igbos be an issue to u? Look at why u hate a tribe, they are meaningless. shame on u

I'll always respect IBOs. They respect their culture, practice it and often make sure it's being passed down their lineage. Thumbs-up for them.

[s]Lol. You are Yoruba, but I won't because you don't respect other people's tradition and culture, condescend so low as your grandpa to come for your tribe because I believe there are sane and reasonable Yoruba people, I mean people your parents weren't privileged enough meet which led to the drastically reduction of your common sense that would have let you know the importance of culture and respecting other people's culture.

Permit me to bring it to your notice that a Yoruba man(Davido) who every male in your lineage would wanna be like married an Igbo woman[Traditionally].

These are the kind of Yoruba people that matters in the society, not someone like you.[/s]

The person you quoted is not even Yoruba but in your haste to display your inbred bigotry you labelled him so you could attempt to bash the Yorubas.

It’s amusing how the wicked runs when no one chases him. Yorubas will always bring out the bitterness in haters like you. grin And what’s more? We don’t even know you’re so pressed. The elephant does not concern itself with the affairs of the ant. We could trample on you lot and still walk on cos the cries of a cockroach are meaningless. grin

Really, can anyone expect common sense from people who were scammed by Ojukwu and in their old age, along with their grandchildren, Nnamdi Kanu? A man who mourned his dog first before the lives of the misguided Igbo yoots who died for his stupîdity? He is lounging in far away UK while his senseless minions are getting shot and searched by soldiers in the erosion ridden south east. grin

grin enjoy your wearing cloth ceremony. Let it be a reminder for how your forebears roamed naked, when we were trading with Portuguese and Fulani nomads in Yoruba land.

Check our names - Emeka, Obinna, Mayowa, Oladayo are all been gradually replaced with James, Kelvin, Benson, Emmanuel etc and we claim we still have culture.
Even the local gods like Amadioha, Sango, Obatala, Esu are all been chased and relegated by a more Fancied, well advertised and aggressively Marketed Gods like Jesus, Allah etc. We now go to church and mosque weekly instead of our local and native Gods house who really know the terrains here than the Imported and Foreign Gods. Our local Gods are blacks and speaks our languages, our native dialects why the foreign own had to be interpreted for us.
Let us go to Medicine - we all have ditched our local native medicines like agbo jedi, agbo iba etc and our native doctors for foreign medicines like paracetamol and using pharmacy, yet we still boast of having culture.
I think we are really deceiving ourselves

if a culture is not refined, another culture will swallow it. advanced or improved culure is termed civilisation. every civilized society used to practice some barbaric cultural practices but with improvement in ways of doing things certain cultural practices were abandoned, followed by cultural assimilation. if colonial masters had met a superior culture, they could had adopted some of our cultural practices. but they met barbarians.

I am not familiar with the Igbo culture but of what significance is the nose mask??

Very colorful event I must say

Someone pls explain?

Dust I think, the flogging is odd and ridiculous according to Capslocked and the OP mentioned they were showing the celebrant pepper so I don't know why he reacted with insults.

Do Igbos not insult Rochas, Ikpeazu etc, why conclude he is a Yoruba man?
