In 1998, an indigenous coach, Monday Sinclair qualified the Eagles for France 1998 but it was Bora Milutonivic that eventually took the team to the World Cup.

Please I need your help. We had a long debate once about this but to the best of my knowledge, Philippe Trousierre was not the coach in the dugout who prepared Nigeria for the final game that qualified us for France 98.

To the best of my knowledge, Monday Sinclair prepared us and coached that match. That team had Oruma playing the creative role and Chris Ohenhen came as a sub in that game and gave the through pass for the final goal scored by Wilson Oruma.

Do you remember the game and the events around it. Also, do you remember if Philippe Trousierre was the one who handled that game or Monday Sinclair.

Opinion
Iwobi needs competition in the number 10 role. Ihenacho can be converted to an attacking midfielder. ( Ihenacho and Osimhen combination go too sweet). embarassed

Nigeria 3 - 0 Kenya. You can see the final through pass by Ohenhen for the last goal to Ohenhen.

Thank you for this. First of all, Philippe Trousierre was not in the country for a long time before the game. I doubt he even selected the squad. There was even debates that if he was not returning, Sinclair should handle the match.

Sinclair might have prepared the team or maybe Trousierre came back to prepare but I doubt he drafted the list since the call ups were made before his return from his temporary exile.

Kog45 seems to recollect a lot of specific data of past events and I would like his spin of it.

He was just having a tough time with the internal politics of the NFA then but am sure he was too experienced then to let another coach pick his team. He(Troussier) was still in charge in the last match against Guinea before he was eventually relieved of his post!

Nigeria had booked their France 98' World Cup ticket in their penultimate match against Kenya with a 3-0 victory over Kenya.

The last game was a mere formality against Guinea far away in Conakry where the former African champions played for bragging rights.

But the French technical adviser decided to call it quits after much pressure from the then Nigeria Football Association (NFA).

The governing body had no choice but to employ an interim coach which Monday Sinclair was the only experienced coach at hand and was the eighth indigenous coach to handle the national team.

Troussier was gone before the final game. Remember there was an invitational tournament which Sinclair still had to coach the team because of the long absence of Troussier.

Troussier was head coach on paper but Sinclair was running the show before his final departure before the last game of the qualifiers.

The info of the events are not clear. I hope Kog45 still remembers.

If my memory serves me right, Troussier was sacked because his team set up was boring and unnigerian. He was a revolutionary actually, we played 3-5-3 as against 4-4-2 which was what the fans and sports pundits wanted to see. We qualified with a game to spare.

He(Troussier) was still in charge for the last game against Guinea (see link above) before he was sacked due to his style of play not suiting most of our players albeit some internal wranglings within the NFA then....Sinclair took charge of a couple of friendly matches against Zambia in December 1997 before Bora was appointed. Bora took the team to the invitational tournament in Hong Kong in January 2018.

eazyjakes has done justice to your posts.

Trousier was in charge but having serious issues with NFF and lost the trust of Nigerians even players due to his football management and formation.

Truly before the last match Monday Sinclair was in charge but Trousier came in on the eve of that match, meaning he may or might not be responsible for the team list but he was on the bench. He was later sacked after the match.

Monday Sinclair took over till Bora Milutonovic was appointed as a coach and this really affected our build up to France 98.

English Premier League side Newcastle United have caused confusion in the camp of Belgium outfit Club Brugge after making a bid of around £9m for Nigerian forward Dennis Emmanuel Bonaventure, Owngoalnigeria.com reports.

Newcastle United have been tracking the 22 year old who caught the attention of the rest of the world with a brace at the Santiago Bernabeu when Brugge held Real Madrid to a 2-2 draw in the UEFA Champions League.

The camp of the forward are open to the move happening in January but Brugge want any move to be put on hold till the summer as they expect other clubs to show interest in the wing forward who has five league goals from 15 games this season.

Also the bid from Newcastle United is viewed as not good enough by the Belgium outfit even though his management team believe the offer is to an extent the present market value of the forward as it contains further add ons base on success rate.

For now the club are resolute in their bid to keep him but his representatives are hoping of a breakthrough and have maintained contact with Newcastle United to force Brugge into making a deal this summer.

Nigeria international and Nantes wing forward Moses Simon has turned down the chance to move to English Championship side Leeds United in the ongoing January transfer window, Owngoalnigeria.com understands.

Simon has been in fine form for Nantes since moving to the Ligue 1 side on loan from Spanish Laliga side Levante in the summer. So far he has four goals and five assists in the league.

He recently won the goal of the first half of the season for the club with his solo effort in the 8-1 thrashing of Paris FC in a cup game where he scored a hattrick earning him the award ahead of three others.

The 24 year old was approached by contacts of the English Championship team but he turned it down insisting on waiting till the end of the season before making a decision on his next decision. It’s almost certain that he will leave Levante in the summer.

Nantes have already made it known that they will triggering the option of signing Simon permanently in the summer when his loan deal expires but it appears he would be sold off immediately by the club.
