Good family history for all to learn from.
From the patriarch Alhassan Dantata to Hallima Dangote, it's the story of success through constant love, education, sacrifice, steadfastness, good
associations and favour of God.

To those who are shouting government policy favours the family . They are not the only family that have enjoyed government favours.

To those who are talking about Dangote being a conduit pipe for thieving politicians, it is because of the success stories that have been made in the beginning. No one will want to get involved with a failure.

In all, the family is a case study on how to make wealth and happiness in a sustainable way for unborn generation.

Part 4

Abdulkadir Sanusi Dantata.

September 1 1945- February 7 2012 (Aliko Dangote’s uncle). He gave Aliko Dangote a business loan with which Dangote started the Dangote Group

The late Alhaji Dantata was born in Sarari Dantata Quarters in the ancient city of Kano to the famous Dantata family on September 1, 1945. He was the eldest son of Sanusi Dantata, son of business mogul and patriarch, Alhassan Dantata, but by dint of hard work, he built a stupendous fortune for himself.

Not even the family’s renowned business and trade patrimony, which had already guaranteed him a financially secure future, could stop the late Dantata from knowledge acquisition. This took him first to Sudan and then Kumasi, Ghana, where he obtained a certificate in advanced Islamic studies in 1956. Four years later, he returned to Nigeria to complete primary education at Kuka Primary School, Fagge in Kano. Unlike some of his peers, a thirst for knowledge nudged him on to acquire the Grade Two Teachers’ Certificate in 1968 before he joined the family business of cotton, groundnut and other agricultural products. In fact, the family business line was the largest licensed produce-buying agent of groundnut in Nigeria in the 1960s.

BUSINESS

Alhaji Dantata would not be content with that; he needed to express himself as he established his Dantata Land and Sea, a company that was into transportation, civil engineering and farming. The business initiatives further crystallised into one of the biggest construction firms – Dantata and Sawoe (founded in 1975) – which he partnered with German interests. As chairman of various business interests including the Asada Group, Brunelli Construction Co. Ltd, WJ Syndicate, Goguwasia Trading Company, Beijing-China, the sky was his limit. His business empire traversed construction, shipping, farming, trading and manufacturing.

Long before he died on February 7 this year, he had deservedly earned for himself the national award of the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) for his industry and contributions to the development of the country.

President Goodluck Jonathan led tributes to Alhaji Dantata when he passed away in 2012. A stream of eminent personalities and well wishers at his burial could have indicated his disposition to people and life generally. Dantata’s health challenges may have cut short his other taller ambitions, but he would remain a beacon of hope and inspiration to budding businessmen.

Again let's not discountenance the fact that these guys got up there with favourable government policies and patronage.
Stories like this make the average Nigerian depressed cos the average Nigerian is smart and hardworking but they haven't made their millions due to unfavourable government policies.

Warren Buffet did not make his wealth through sceintific and technological breakthrough nor was Carlos Slim and the likes.
You people should stop being one sided in your judgement.

Whether we like it or not, northerners have been doing business and have been leading the pack before the entity called Nigeria ever existed.
Bill Gates have impacted the world than the two (Carlos and Warren) will ever do ? I am not referring to his philanthropical gesture but his contribution to the advancement of computing technology.

I agree with you brother, but let's look at the united family as an Atom, the average Nigerian family below the poverty line.
Imagine brother A hustles hard and gets excited from his 1st orbit very close to the nucleus to another level of prosperity, he is not rich but he is ok. cool
Brother A tries to excite Brother B, he may release a photon and gets de-excited back to ground state because he doesnt have sufficient energy (wealth) to stay excited. cry
Now imagine when a beam (FG enabling environment) is fired at the Atom, Brothers A, B, C & D who are in different states of excitement would get fired up and move to higher levels of excitement, possibly into prosperity. cheesy
Trust me, no matter how we beef ourselves a the nigerian family is more selfless than the average European family. All we need is an enabling environment.

Many of the posters do not understand (not surprised) of the topic. Most rich families in this part of the world exhaust their family fortunes within a generation due to various reasons. The Dantata/Dangote dynasty have been able to sustain their wealth through shrewd decisions. They married within themselves thereby keeping the wealth within the family. They ensured that each member of the family is business savvy and not a liability. They are financially prudent and are neutral when it comes to politics.

If many wealthy families (such as the Abiolas, Ojukwus and inevitably the Ibrus) had followed this rule, their family fortune would not have gone down the drain within a short period.

The fact is that most wealthy families in this part of the world do not last long compared to their European and Asian counterparts due to lack of foresight. They, like most Nigerians, are more interested in the short-term as opposed to the long-term.

Warren Buffet and Carlos Slim may not have the global outreach as Bill Gates but they sure do have made contributions to humanity in their own little way.

Lessons from the Dantata/Dangote story:

1) Do not get involved in partisan politics, but make sure you are close to the authorities (Chief MKO Abiola would have benefited from this advice).

2) Do not be overly flamboyant or ostentatious (it breeds jealousy, envy and hatred). Again, Chief Abiola would have benefited from this advice.

3) As a family unit, you gain more from cooperation than from conflict (he advised them to continue to marry within the family and to take care of the poorer members of the family). Note that Aliko Dangote worked for Abdulkadir Sanusi Dantata and got a business loan from him. Sayyu Dantata worked for Aliko Dangote and got his business idea while serving as chief executive of Dangote Transport. Witness what is happening in the Abiola and Ibru families.

4) Education is important. Make sure you know about the business you are involved in and that you have broad knowledge that would assist you in future. Alhassan had an advantage over other Kano merchants because he understood basic english and basic accounting, enough to help him in his dealings with others.

5) Volume trading: As much as possible, make sure you are the dominant player in your area of business, such that you can control events and prices within that sector.
We can't actually compare the cordiality between Hausa/Fulani ethnic group with any other group in Nigeria even in Africa.... They are a very solid nation. Hardly have hatred, jealousy within one another despite the polygamous settings in the family.

Toy with Hausa/Fulani at your own loss. I hope they are more intellectually advanced though so as for Nigeria to be collectively advanced.

I keep forgetting to stress the fact that the famous groundnut pyramids were an invention of Al-Hassan Dantata.

I've looked at the story from two opposite sides.

1) Much of what Dantata did was to provide a huge logistics operation. There were many farmers all over the north who sold their produce exclusively to him. He had licensed agents who went to the villages to buy the products. They then brought the products to the big cities like Kano and they were stacked in pyramid shapes. Dantata knew the European companies that bought the produce and he had connections in the railways, so the trains took the products to the customers/ports in the south. He was the one that came up with this idea of stacking the products (in pyramid shapes) in the big cities and moving them in bulk.

2) On the other side, I read an account by a colonial officer who explained what happened at a particular meeting. Lord Lugard was at the meeting and while everybody was praising him (he had a big ego), one of the technical officer, who was feeling uncomfortable with the way the meeting was going, had his chance to speak. His speech was about the need for a standard gauge railway line. He said that the narrow gauge line was too slow and that cargoes of groundnuts were backed up in Kano and they were being stacked like pyramids (in the British man's mind, the pyramids were a sign of inefficiency). (A standard gauge line is currently being built, over one hundred years after that meeting).

This is the best thread I have seen since I joined Nairaland. So many practical financial lessons to learn here.

Personally, I sometimes wish that incest was not seen as a taboo. I would have married my own sister. She is a good manager of finance, a great records-keeper and a brilliant salesperson. I doubt if I will marry if I can't find someone like her who is also a decently wealthy home.

Op, well-done. You can do better than this anyway. We lazy Nigerian youths need something this educative

Firstly I must commend the OP, @naptu2 for doing a nice job. The article is well research, keeping the readers especially the ones that yearn for knowledge glued to their touchscreen. I also love the way he posted all the articles at once, not keeping his readers waiting and refreshing the thread every minute thereby giving room to much foul talks by some members.

I don't do assumptions, I judge things based on what I know, observed and from reliable sources. Whether monopoly of business or northern hegemony, you will agree with me that the Dangote/Dantata family still hold the portrait of Alhassan Dantata whether at heart or hand telling him every minute and seconds that they will never fail him and make his last wish come true and remain steady.

Although the present generation of this family might be into one form of opaque business or the other, but the one I care to learn from is the pioneer, the master and legend of them all ALHASSAN DANTATA. That man in his youthful days is a legend, no fighting his mum because mum wouldn't give him money even though she was in money, not fighting his Islamic teacher even though he takes the lion's share of his sweat. The young man was like Joseph in the Bible, he knows where he is going to and nothing on earth could sway him to and fro. He even bought his freedom as a slave, he never allowed anything to distract him. He was too focus indeed!

Government policy in Africa is not friendly at all, they now want graduates to have a skill after spending about four to six(4-6) years in the university as if it's beans they went to cook in school. WTF! Even after learning the skill where will the start up capital come from? This continent is jam-packed with crazy leaders both in the political and religious circle. The continent need a thorough clean up like the Ogoni land.

Nevertheless, we should not be wearied in our endeavors, we must never allow the useless government of ours to determine our fate. ALHASSAN DANTATA was once a slave, he wanted to be rich or more richer than his father, in fact he wanted to ensure a constant wealth flow in his bloodline and that feat has been accomplished and still being maintained.

Regardless of your hustle, don't lose focus on God, or can't you see the way the Dangote/Dantata family carried the Koran,Hadith and Islamic studies at the center of their head? Pray to God for wisdom, knowledge and understanding and he shall direct your path.

For those into "get rich quick scheme" or having that syndrome be warned! Every day for the thief one day for the owner.

Don't blame anyone or anybody too much for the failure you have experienced or passing through, be focus on breaking away from your poverty line so that your generation will thank you for eliminating them from poverty.

Do not maintain your poverty line by murmuring, backlash, accusations, procrastination, backbiting, jealousy, rumours, laziness, pride etc.

Trust in God, Pray for the betterment of others and always do good anytime, anyplace and anybody.

Thanks.

God bless.

Incest is a taboo primarily because of genetics.

Marry a blue blood if you want to build and preserve dynastic wealth.

And keep your sister close. Paul Allen left his estate to his sister. He never married nor had kids; and she managed things while he was still alive.

Lastly, do not be ostentatious.

He didn't read the posts, so he doesn't know what it's about (you can tell from the fact that he said that Dangote said that he was poor). He's just reacting based on what he has heard before, he doesn't know what this thread is about (he thinks that the thread is about Dangote).

It is not your flamboyance that attracts people's jealousy, envy and hatred. Some people are just satans, that's all! And some others, it is their own failures, frustrations and poverty that is eating them. Even if you "maintain your lane", keep a low profile, etc, the fact that you're even doing well in life will still attract their hatred and bad mind. I'm a regular victim of such, so I'm talking from experience Sir!
