Agbaje has said this to score some cheap political point. Empathy with the weak, the voiceless is one thing, but understanding a choice made by a government in power for the long term social well being of the state is another.
Why have we become so set in our ways? When did Okada yellow buses and keke ever become the standard modes of transportation anywhere in the world?
Little wonder we are stuck in the comforts of the comfortable, unable to progress beyond where we are We can't even play catch up

Those bike hailing startups you listed must have been dumb to revolve their business model around Lagos alone. Is Lagos the only state in Nigeria? No serious business would do such. Lagos population is just roughly 10% of Nigeria's estimated total population. They should move to other states that are more receptive to bike hailing. Simple.
ohh, easier said than done. Maybe U have not invested in any business before, that's why u are sounding this way. Do u know what it means to loose your investment because govt bad policy?

@twilliamx, God bless you! You're one of the few, sensible, clear thinking Nigerians I've seen. The herd mentality is what most Nigerians carry- they wait for someone's emotional outbursts and then join the din.
Nobody progresses in life in the comfort zone Lagos is in a state of statism.SanwoOlu was impelled to take this choice by a collage of factors. I'm sure the see-saw nonsense of okada and its associates inspired him.

Jimi Agbaje, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday said the outright ban on okada and tricycles in some parts of Lagos state is not the solution to accidents and insecurity which is the primary concern of the state government.

Speaking in a chat with Daily Independent, Agbaje who was the Lagos state governorship candidate of the PDP in the 2015 and 2019 general elections said the ban which took effect from February 1 has kept thousands of okada and tricycle riders out jobs .

He said this will have a ripple effect on the economy as those associated with them such as the vulcanizers, spare parts sellers, food sellers and others will also be negatively affected.

While noting the hardships being experienced by some Lagosians as a result of the ban, Agbaje advised Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to regulate the activities of the operators instead of the outright ban, adding that jobless okada and tricycle riders may resort to crimes which will not augur well for the security of the state.

“For me, I note the concerns of the Lagos State Government on security and accidents. But having said that, I am not sure the solution to these problems is the outright ban on the routes they have listed. When you look at the effect of the ban, you are putting thousands of people out of jobs”.

“There is also a ripple effect of the ban because the vulcanizers who mend the tyres of these tricycles and okada will have no jobs to do. Also, the food seller who sells to these okada riders will also close business as they can no longer patronize her”.

“So, it has a ripple effect and to that extent, it affects the economy. It brings about its own security issues. A jobless tricycle or okada rider can be dangerous”.

“I think what we need to do is to regulate them. Regulating them is to bring about the formal operators. You have people that have put together a set up, all you need do is to regulate them”.

“Those operators have regulated themselves in the sense that they have bought motorcycles that are within the laws of Lagos state by the capacity of their motorcycles, so by law they are allowed to move on any route”, he said.

Has the mass transit been utilised on its ful capacity b4 stoping dis poor riders?

Sorry this is not how to get Nigeria to be like other countries. This is pure Nonsense!!!

What do we really want in this country, development or stagnation or moving round the vicious circle? Okada/tricycle business has turned Lagos into a jungle city. Only Nigeria and Cotonou use Okada as a means of transportation. No sane country of the world we are dreaming of use Okada as a means of transportation. We need tough decisions like this to enable us achieve our dreams.
Yes because in saner countries like the ones you dreams Nigeria would one day become, the government is sensible enough to provide a very effective means of transportation not 65 buses to serve a city that is supposed to be mega.

Why is nobody talking about the lack of alternatives?
Or 65 buses are supposed to be enough to serve how many local governments? 65buses is not enough for ikeja alone.

This shows that the government does not have the interest of the masses at heart.

If he wanted to take out those two means of transportation, why not bring in buses first for some time before getting the tricycles outhuh?

He doesn't care. He wont suffer it, his kids wont even smell it. Same things with those of you typing all these things like you dont see students trekking on their return from school.

God bless all the reasonable Nigerians who have been helping people with their cars.

@Ohemababy ,you're a symbol of the Nigerian state; symptomatic of some of the ills that have frailed the country.
This is the communication revolution. The rest of the world are using technology to move out of their misery, while Nigeria is trudging under the weight of underdevelopment. It took both India and China a generation a piece to move millions out of extreme poverty.500 million in the case of China and 100 in the case of India. Today, both are power houses of the East. You and me consume their products and services. With your set mindset- stuck in primodial and antiquated beliefs-you can't innovate, because many things will be lost on your mind that has not travelled beyond the conventional and the comfortable.
And, do you know Rwanda? In 1994, they,by all standards, fought a civil war, where some 1 million lives where wasted in 100 days.A generation later,Rwanda is rebuilding and is showing Nigeria the way in many things, because there are forward thinking mortals, leveraging on technology, making the most of the age. They've not dropped their shoulders and bemoaned their collective loss eternally.

Again if you stood under the sun for an hour and had to resort to trekking later on, you would not have the energy and time to type all these things.

Nobody is against revolution.
It doesn't have to be the Rwandan way unless you are willing to lose your life the way some lives were lost in Rwanda.
What is wrong with the government installing sufficient buses before taking the tricycles off the roadhuh

Or redirecting BRT buses to those routes for the mean timehuh

@Ohemababy,oh well, I've been in worse situations.I'm a Lagosian by blood and birth.I've also travelled the length and breath of Naija.I'm in my second generation; seen the good, the nonsense and the hideous sides of Lagos.Conversely, I've lived in Abuja with its much better organisation- it's not the best. I know- but it's better than Lagos. I was at Tejuosho today for hours, crisscrossing some towns in Lagos. So,your argument that, maybe, I don't stay in the sun for hrs is too lame and carries no firepower.
My argument is that the Lagos State Government has done the right thing.Of course, people are hurt because they've lost their means of escape or survival, not even living. I empathise with them. But,the government was hard pressed on this choice and had to bite the bullet. Moreso ,the government hasn't erred at all,as there is a 2012 act that outlawed okada riders in Lagos.
New York,London ,Rotterdam, Paris,Istanbul and so many cosmopolitan cities in the world are not as disorganised and filthy as Lagos. Why must Lagos be different? If people can't cope, or more to the point ,will not cope with the law, they can move out of Lagos. After all, Lagos is not meant for everyone.

This was the same way people were complaining when Fashola started massive building demolition 12years ago.

It's just a matter of time everything will come back to normal.
Okada riders can still ply other areas that aren't banned na.

Bro chill now there's no change without having some sort of effects on the majority but better still it's a step ahead to better development. This is just a phase to alleviate to a better and working system. Beside you can't be doing the same thing and expect same result. Sanwo olu has vision for Lagos and he's taking a bold steps towards it.

Beside more that 60 buses will be made available across major roads from 3rd February including the ferry terminals in the city. Facing the reality is harsh, but few month from now the system will improve better.

Good but consider those who have park the only source that can feed them .
Is obvious that the rate of stealling in the country will be high compare to lack of employment opportunities when others are self employed and now it has been banned .

Come to think of it, Must everybody stay in Lagos? Don't they have a village where they come from, Lagos is over populated. Every living soul wants to come to Lagos as if there's money tree there. Practically suffering and smiling in the name of being called a lagosian.

Alot of farmers in the village are far better than some Lagos-based men and women, realistically!!!

Again he must ba a stupid man to have 4 kids when he knows the contraints of his job.
Since the Keke biz has been revoked he should bounce back and look for another means of income. He's aware that those kekes were ban in some areas since 2011 and infact the old signs are there. So because govt did not enforce you took it for granted.

Since many families sources of income depends on this motorist driving which I think the government made a sudden move without laying down plans for the people this decision might affected, I think the best this the governor should do is to bring them back and enforce laws they will abide to pending till when there is a proper restructuring for the best benefit of all Lagosians.

Personally, I suggest the governor should readdress this problem probably give a prior notice for some month/year before banning them and making sure there are better alternative that can create employment for those that will be affected.

It takes a lot of balls to bring change, because people have built thier life around the staus quo. But it doesn't make the status quo right. What you have to know is that there is no time the change will come that it will not affect some set of people. The government should hurry up and bring the alternatives. Great civilizations like the us, Canada, china don't have Okada running around. China had to violently force civilization on some of its people and now they sre better for it. Look.. I've always said it time and time again. Being in Lagos does not guarantee your success. What was he doing in Ogun state. If Lagos is no longer profitable then he should move back to Ogun state now. I've had people relocate to States with less stress are are not regretting thier actions.
Again nobody promised good life for you in Lagos. Go and find the good life in States or areas that suit your income.

I can guarantee you that all those Keke riders had other jobs. They ventured in Keke becos it was easiest to make money. What they didnt know however was the government risk attached to it which should have prepared them to save for situations like this. But instead they will be eating like glutons and spending money on oloshos up and down living like there's no tomorrow.

Now you are saying government should find something for them. How now
