Geoffrey Onyeama: US May Lift Travel Ban In One Month by LosC: 10:34pm On Feb 04, 2020
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, has given indications that the United States Government may lift its visa ban on Nigeria in about a month’s time.

Onyeama made the disclosure on the sidelines of the 5th Nigeria-United States Bi-National Commission (BNC) in Washington DC, United States.

Nigeria, Eritrea, Myanmar and Kyrgyzstan, including Sudan and Tanzania, were countries that the United States slammed with visa ban last week on account of performance metrics for identity-management and information-sharing criteria.

The United States was piqued that there was a lack of a credible background investigation system that security groups like Interpol can rely on in vetting and certifying the origin of prospective immigrants to the United States from the affected countries.

Following the ban, President Muhammadu Buhari immediately set up a committee to look into the issues that led to the issuance of the ban on immigrant visas to Nigerians.

In line with the presidential directive, Onyeama said that the Nigerian Government has taken serious steps to address issues raised by the United States in issuing the visa restrictions.

Onyeama stated that after productive deliberations on the visa ban, the United States Government assured Nigeria that it was possible to lift the ban if the Federal Government resolved the issues in one month.

He added that the United States was apprehensive over variations of the Nigerian data system and third party involvement in the management of the passport system, particularly information and data on lost and stolen passports.

“One of their concerns is that the data we provide should not go through a third party and we have been using a third party in the management of our passport issues. So, they are a bit worried that security information should not go through private third parties before they become available to them.

“So, we have been doing a lot already to address this. We are putting in place some databases and ICT architecture that will capture these data and make them accessible in real-time to Interpol and all the member-countries of Interpol and it should be up and running within about a month,” Onyeama said.

Speaking further, Onyeama said the Nigerian government is currently providing direct information on the lost and stolen passports within the six technical areas the United States had raised concerns.

He added that the United States appealed to Nigeria to begin in earnest by issuing electronic passports and keep them informed about all the details in order to decipher between fake and genuine passports, even as the United States requested Nigeria to share data and information on suspected terrorists and known terrorists.

While saying that Nigeria has met most of the requirements, Onyeama added that the government is also addressing the outstanding issue of lost and stolen passports.

“So, we pretty much agreed with them that once we address these issues, hopefully in not too distant future, we will be removed from these restrictions,” Onyeama added.

Onyeama also disclosed that the Federal Government has kick-started a process of giving information and data directly to Interpol for member-states like the United States to have access.

He also said the Nigerian Immigration Service had already put in place the architecture and technology to address the outstanding issue within a month.

I think the better things for the government to address are the pushing forces which are making the Nigerian citizens to be desperate for an immigration visa to the US.

Security, good governance, working policies etc. With these, Nigerians are good to go, not bothered and concerned about any US stringent immigration policy on Nigeria by the US

believe it or not the ban will be removed in 3 to 4 weeks, it is huge slap on us. note that the visa ban does not affects most government officials, but it is an additional dent on our already distroyed reputation anywhere in the World so they will quickly fix this.

Enough of this ban brouhaha,it was well deserved,it is pathetic seeing almost every youth in the country justling to go to the US like it's heaven, this people lack patriotism and self respect, most of them go there without any agenda or even a place to stay they end up making a nuisance of themselves and country there. Stay I'm your country and apply yourself.

Good news for travellers.
That being said.........

The Real Reason US Suspends Immigrant Travel Visas On Nigerians
It has little or nothing to do with Boko Haram,
has nothing to do with Buhari,
has nothing to do with arrest and detention of journalist, has nothing to do with Nigeria’s ban on gays and lesbian, but has everything to do with absence of a workable system in our identification and verification processes.

The main reason Nigeria is suspended from Immigrant visas category is because Nigeria does not have a credible background investigation system that groups like Interpol can rely on to vert and certify originality.

What that means is that if someone commits a crime in Lagos and relocates to Kano, there’s no system that can be used to track crimes and people across state lines.

Virtually all African countries have such systems even Ghana has it, Cameroun everyone has original birth certificates but nigeria prefers to have multiple identity cards not because they are interested in monitoring and tracking people but because they want to make money. Our country is a transaction society, you can buy anything even the human conscience.

Most responsible modern states in the world have tracking systems, but nigeria does not.
A typical example, if you are about 40 years,
if you go to your primary school to get your records they don’t have it.
Principals and headmasters do not have computers in the 21st century.

Now only states that are considered rogue nations or failed states that do not have workable systems.
Most nations in this category are nations at war.
Nigeria is not at war but the irresponsible nature of our government from the beginning till now makes Nigeria a war zone.

Now, back to US suspension, let us make it clear that only Immigrants visas are affected.
Non immigrant visas are not affected.
An immigrant visas is a type of visa that allows you to stay, work or even become a US citizen after you travel.

This category involves the type of visa you get when you marry an American citizen and have to relocate or the type of visas given to parents when their American citizens file for them or the visa you get through lottery.

Another category of visa affected is birth visas,
these are medical tourism visas to come to America and have a baby.
It is those categories of visas that are affected. Some waivers do apply.
However, non immigrant visas like visitors or business visas are not affected, however going forward it will be difficult to get.

What America is saying is that we cannot continue to give immigrant visas to your people if our investigators have no tools to work with to verify the true identity of your immigrant populations.

Example, someone who wins lottery or marries a US citizen, the investigators will want to check him up to primary school, but we have no records.
Our government should be ashamed that we do not have a reliable working system to track Nigerians instead of deceiving the people to assume it is unfair what US has done.

All our previous and present government should be ashamed that today we are grouped with countries like Eritrea and Sudan.
A sensible country, what they should be doing now is to put such a system in place.
Last year, two of our American friends visited Nigeria and went back with Nigerian international passports.
That can never happen in Ghana or even Liberia.
But with money you can buy a man's conscience in Nigeria.

With as little as three to five hundred dollars people are ready to subvert the law and do the unthinkable.
With just Ten thousand Naira anyone can get local governments origin letters, worst still, today traders who never stepped their legs in universities are given degrees and people even serve youth service with fake results.
If you are America will you continue to give immigrant visas to a country you cannot verify a simple certificate?
If you are America will you continue to give citizenship to immigrants whose entire documents for relocation to your country may have been forged?

We forge ID cards, we forge bank statements to get visas, we forge birth certificates, we forge marriage certificates, we forge election results, what is it that we do not forge?

We should not blame the US, the truth is we have failed as a nation.
May God help our darling country.
God bless Nigeria.

Even though i know this Buhari led administration is a very useless one and Buhari himself is a lifeless power drunk kunnu sipping and gworo chewing dullard, I am still sure the Ban will be lifted in no time. One thing we should bear in mind is the fact that Nigeria is the number one black nation in the world. Just like China in Asia, Nigeria remains the largest economy in Africa even though the quality of life is not as good as some African Countries like SA.. Naija remains a very Popular country in the World so definitely, the US will lift this ban because no matter how little, they also stand to lose something by banning Nigeria.

They are bastard if they do..

Why do they think they can disrespect Nigerians?

Some people know how much america gains from Nigeria,Spain,France...some of us Nigerians when we wanna go to USA. We plan to spend 20 thousand dollars or a bit less not to talk of our women who give birth there..

We buy ticket of 800k..

How many Americans havev2 thousand dollars in their pocket to spend...I gave some one Fifty$50 and was in tears...we spend ourbmoney there. Don't disrespect us..

Enough said..

Even our loot money is in Americans banks and they still disrespect us...it is not their fault. Its our leaders that sold us out

Tell them to check the statisitic..majority of best brains in stem and medical are Nigerians inbusa apart from India Pakistan' or Normal Americans..we are hard working intellects.. We deserve some respect in the world.

Start from changing the Nigerian ambassador to the US.

We have an 87 year old, who can barely stand or walk unaided as our ambassador to the most powerful nation in the world.

If you are that nation, will you also take us serious?

how will they Govt of Nigeria resolve a identity database that houses ids like national identity card, voters card, intl passport and the new NIMC cards? The govt should be thinking of harmonizing and giving nigerians verified system of identification which can be useful for other purposes.
