Abeg go and sit down. You probably weren't even born when your elders were surrendering and fleeing to Ivory Coast, in the face of overwhelming federal firepower.

Now you have mouth to boast because it's all over and they left you to live. Abeg get lost. Small boy.

The man you actually quoted is more experienced than you in every facet of life.
The Southern sudanese do not have 1/4th of the Igbo population, they are 100% landlocked (unlike Igbos who has sprinklets of Igboid tribes around the atlantic in Rivers, Delta etc) yet these south sudanese fought the Arabic-speaking Northern Sudanese and janjaw..eeds backed by Arab countries for 30 years through conventional and guerilla warfare.

They suffered starvation, hunger, death in millions, yet today they are still existent and most importantly free from the Janjawe..eds and you think Igbos can't duplicate such a feat if their very existence, lands etc is directly threatened with all their human capacity and intellectual resources, backed by a strong diaspora population? Do you know your 'gowon' soldiers died more in their numbers than Biafran soldiers? Go do your research.

Oga, stop lying to yourself. No man born of a woman can extinguish Ndigbo. The world knows this. You are still welcomed to try and see what happens if you want.

*I wrote 'Janjawee.ds, NL changed it to APC. Since when did sudanese killers become a synonym for APC in Nigeria?

Bros, you cannot invent history or rewrite it.

In 1967 there was no satellite technology to monitor who was killing whom. It was a case of if the govt allowed media to enter a region, then they could report on what they saw. If they refused to let you in, you saw and knew nothing. They would have eliminated Igbos and nothing would have happened, you hear?

The British would have loved nothing more than for the Nigerian army to go in there and decimate the 'troublesome' Igbos after their surrender.

The British media would have just said that federal troops went in and mopped up a few remnants of the rebellion. Case closed. Who argues with the British media?

What makes you think the coloniser, who created Nigeria, and who himself has a history of genocide in Africa and elsewhere, would care a hoot if Igbos were eliminated as a group? The same Igbos challenging their Nigerian contraption?

You folks keep having this idea that the white man is some sort of angel who cares about your black behind.

Biafra was a threat to THEIR Nigeria project, and the British gave Nigeria FOR FREE, weapons, warships, and fighter jets to eliminate that threat, but yet you somehow think they cared about you and your survival?

And that they would have opposed Gowon for killing too many of you?

Was it also the British that asked Gowon to declare No Victor No Vanquished and give you money, and help rebuild your cities?

You had ''thousands of armed Biafran Soldiers in the bushes'', so why did you surrender? Why did your leader flee? He clearly had no confidence in the ability of those ''fighters'' or he'd remain there and lead them to victory.

Your naivety is so comical.

It is the same naivety displayed by Ojukwu in fighting a war in the first place, armed with sticks and stones.

The same naivety displayed by IPOB and Kanu today, who approach British parliamentarians and US congressmen to help them actualize Biafra. The very same people who supported and armed Nigeria to keep the nation intact! wink

I mean, the depth of your geopolitical naivety is just....astonishing.

God bless you. Gowon government really mercy igbos if na somebody like murtala hmmmm.

Have you read the CIA declassified files on that Civil War? The United States was the people who made it clear to Gowon that they would not tolerate that idea. The Idea was first mooted by Usman Katsina (he wanted the federal troops tokill off every igbo above 5 years old and have the Fulani train the kids). Gowon was still beligerent even after the war, Arguing with the US about who should solve the kwashiorkor issue in the east. According to Gowon, "Kwarshiokor is a Nigerian issue to be solved by Nigerians". It was in this same period that Awolowo was poisioning infant baby formular going to the east.
I'll investigate these things you wrote and if they're true, my assignment will greatly increase.

The way you people reason is very shocking. I can clearly see the mountain of hatred in your heart against Igbos. The Spanish did not wipe out those indigenous Americans through open killings; it was systemic and it spanned decades to do such. Mind you that the Spanish had superior advantage over those scattered tribes. Nigeria can't/couldn't do quarter of that to Igbos. They might started and manage to kill a few hundred of thousands more but Ojukwu in Cote D'Ivoire would have got the necessary support from the reports that would come in and the tide turned against Nigeria. Nigeria wasn't manufacturing any ammunition not even a bullet. She depended entirely on the European powers which she would lose if they had attempted it. I know your hatred would allow you to reason up to that level. This was in the 70s and not in 19th century where you could get away with many things. The Germans had to use concentration camps to kill 6million Jews and this took them 5yrs to do. What was the population of Igbos at that time? Your reasoning has been blurred with hate. Wiping out whole population isn't easy as you may think.
I know what inspired you to bring up this foolish thread. You want us to reason like we owe Gowon our lives and therefore should be subservient to any thing dished to us in Nigeria. This is a very foolish thought pattern. The war we fought is a just one and we're unapologetic about it. If another war comes up millions will still die and no group will be wipe out even if Biafra wins because migration has ensured that the big ethnic groups have their people scattered in other countries.
Finally, Gowon still remain the criminal that he is. He renegaded on the agreement at Aburi and attacked Biafra. He wasn't ready to solve the problem until he has got the domination his fulani lords desired with the enabling of willing tools from your people. It's on record that all the willing tools attacked Biafra before Biafran soldiers ventured into their lands.
Go choke on your hatred. Biafra will come to your greatest sorrow.

Thank you very much for this comment.

@Rossippi...
I exactly do not know what you intend to gain from a very very stupid and useless post like this.
With all that is happening in Nigeria, you still decide to bring up such madness?

Let me clarify you on something.
I am from Plateau state. Where I come from is a neighbouring LGA to where Yakubu Gowon comes from.
My family are friends and relatives through marriage with Yakubu Gowon's family. My uncles died fighting that very useless, pointless and senseless war which I their descendant is very much ashamed of.

Nigeria is a very useless unworkable country which was never meant to exist in the first place.
You are here talking against Biafra, meanwhile many others like us from the Middlebelt, SS and even Yorubas are now seeing the need why we should key into Kanu's struggle or partner with him for the dissolution of this unholy union called Nigeria.

I don't know where you come from, but I am sure you are not from Plateau state, Benue or even anywhere around the Middlebelt.
Our people were the ones who fought that war, so I think if there is anyone who should boast or take pride in that war, it should be us.... But we will never do that because it was a big mistake with which we have apologized to the Igbo nation for.
The Hausa fulani core-north are the real enemies of everyone and not the Igbos.
They manipulated and deceived my own people into fighting that war for them and Yakuby Gowon who was born and bred in Hausa land and had a Hausa mentality was the perfect puppet to be used in order to win the support of middlebelters and northern Christians.

I thank God Yakubu Gowon is still alive, we the youths from his state and his region will soon come out to denounce him... Shameless old man.

I'm sure you are a Hausa fulani or a Yoruba Muslim or someone connected to the caliphate.
Better face a future of your own people and leave every pipe-dream of a united Nigeria or any history that comes with it cos it's just a matter of time till it all gets to the trash bin.

I am one of the leaders of a regional pressure group for my people and by the grace of God, this year or early next year, we are going to meet Nnamdi Kanu for a hand of friendship and partnership.
Several middlebelt leaders have already met with Nnamdi Kanu for a form of partnership, but they have never officialized it. ..My group is the one that will officialize it, and when we do this, we will come and meet with Niger Deltan leaders as fellow minorities to minorities and make them understand why we should all work together. ....

So keep basking in your foolishness until you get the shock of your life very soon.

You are actually comparing the 2 and half year decimation of Biafra with the South Sudanese experience? You really must be a joker. Did 2 million South Sudanese die in under 3 years, of starvation?

Sure they lost around 2 million people, but that was in a low intensity war that lasted over 22 years! There was never really a hot war in Sudan. It was always a low scale guerrilla affair from the get go between roughly equal parties, as far as I'm aware. Comparing the far more deadly Biafran conflict with the Sudan war is truly irresponsible.

So why una surrender na? Groups that are as powerful as you claim to be do not have their leader fleeing to another country in the heat of battle, and do not face mass starvation, or waving white flags of surrender.

Making mouth after being comprehensively trounced on the battlefield is really comical.

Funny how you lot accuse Nigeria of genocide, yet when we outline the process a real genocide would have taken, you deny its possibility.

Stop lying. ''Millions'' of Igbos did not flee anywhere. Only a handful of refugees, plus a few elite, made their way out. How did ''millions'' flee? With what transport? In the 1960s? Please stop lying. It's unhelpful.

Na so. What would you have fought the guerrilla war with? Your little toy guns or matchetes?

Listen up. To fight a guerrilla war you need WEAPONS. Biafra had no weapons, and was blockaded, so could import none, assuming she actually had any money to import anything after the surrender.

Biafra was too weak and hungry/starving to launch a guerrilla war. You do not fight guerrilla war on an empty stomach.

Secondly, Nigeria was just too powerful, and would have decimated those fighters by carpet bombing them, and burning down all the cities of the east, or bombing them to smithereens.

This was what happened in Germany in WW2. German cities like Dresden, Berlin, Munich etc were bombed to smithereens by the allied forces.. Totally destroyed. And then Hitler committed suicide. Some say he fled to Argentina.

Why do you think the Germans did not engage in guerrilla warfare to continue the battle? You know why? They looked around them and saw there was nothing worth fighting for.

Losing a war can be highly demoralising especially when your cities are burnt to the ground and millions of your people have been killed.

Biafra saw that coming, and that was why they surrendered. Please stop deceiving yourself that they could have fought a guerrilla war. They had no ability to do with the starvation, and their experience with Nigerian forces.

Talk is cheap. I'm only hurt that you're bragging after being armed heavily by the world powers against a poor African group. I hope to see this your loud mouth should another war break out in the shithole. British influence has waned badly and accessibility of weapons is at present highest. That which you wish Igbos will be visited on your own people.

Sudan could not blockade South Sudan cos South Sudan had sympathetic neighbors like Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia who supported them to the South!

Do you think Biafra would have had starvation casualties if Cameroon had supported them with food?

After Ojukwu fled and the East surrendered, they were at the mercy of federal troops.

The federal troops were ready to march into the east and slaughter every single person there, thus ending the existence of the Igbo ethnic group.

Then they received a call from Lagos.

From Yakubu Gowon, who ordered them to sheathe their swords, and return to the barracks.

Without that call from Gowon, there would be no Igbos today, as an ethnic group.

There would be no Onitsha, Enugu, Owerri, Umuahia, Nnewi, Aba, or Abakaliki today.

Those places would have been renamed and would today be called,

New Kaduna

New Benin

Orisha Town

New Lagos

New Ilorin

New Zaria

Osun City

New Ilesha etc etc.

See, THAT is what NORMALLY happens when you lose a war.

You are not just left alone to carry on where you left off. All your leaders are executed. Your cities are burned to the ground, and your men massacred or enslaved, and your women carted off as wives and concubines, and scattered across the land.

But in Nigeria's case it was different, thanks to General Yakubu Gowon.

After the war he declared ''No Victor, No Vanquished''. A WORLD FIRST.

The entire world was STUNNED.

They least expected such a rare display of humanity and magnanimity from any country, least of all, an AFRICAN country.

Africa was a continent they had long dismissed as a savage, barbaric land filled with primitive, warring tribes who despised one other.

Gowon's declaration of ''No Victor, No Vanquished'' made world headlines, and was aired in every newspaper and TV station on earth when it happened, to serve as an example to the world, and to humanity, that military victory does not have to translate to the annihilation of your foe.

He even gave the defeated Biafrans money! And sent in federal funds to help rebuild their fallen cities! And allowed them to continue with self governance!

That simply never happens in warfare.

If you don't know warfare, go and study warfare.

Message for secessionist haters: Truth is, if Nigeria was anywhere near as evil, wicked and hateful of Igbos as you say she is, you wouldn't actually exist.

Oga stop hyperventilating before you die of hypertarchycardia. You cannot extinguish a people more than 50 million strong and resident in more than 200 countries in the world. It is practically impossible.

The Igbos kept their guns after the silencing of the nozzles and watched the situation keenly. If Gowon had tried taken their ancestral lands or perpetrated more mass killings, the war would have continued like it was in Sudan, Columbia (FARC) and Tamil in Sri lanka and would spill into the rest of Nigeria.

With hit-and-run tactics of guerilla warfare, you don't need a detectable marching batallion moving into Kaduna or Oyo, you sneak in, do your damage on military resources and get out. Yes it will elicit more killings but more will join the guerilla cause in droves.

Your fathers died in great numbers trying to kill Igbos and more would have still died, until Gowon runs out of idiots to fight for him if that war had continued. We all know this.

Thanks my friend. You're one of those who say things the way they are and is prepared to face the future head on; not tied to the dreams of the hausa/fulani vampires. I personally have met tens of middle belt men who fought against Biafra and they told me the various sectors in which they fought. Majority of them regretted fighting the war. Lots of them had unforgettable scars. They said they were deceived. I even met one who was still in active service and married an Igbo woman from Umuahia. All the children were known with their Igbo names. Uche, Bonny, Ogor etc. At present, the lands of some of them have been taken over by the fulanis. Now, they've seen who the real enemy is but Rossipp will want to continue demonizing a people who's only crime was to seek their freedom from wanton killings and destruction. All that matters to him is Nigeria not minding the death and destruction visited on the constituent parts by a particular group.
As for your group, you're welcome to visit IPOB. We welcome and partner with your to see to our freedom from the evil contraption. The modalities will be agreed upon and we set to work. Those willing tools like Rossiipp and his people should forever be stationed with the fulanis.

Ojukwu and his henchmen were thoughtless. Secession is not something you wake up one morning and say you want to do.

Serious groups with secessionist ambitions stockpile weapons in secret for years. In secret, they seek out alliances and make deals with selected foreign partners as to how the latter would benefit from supporting the secessionist movement, eg via long term oil deals, trade deals, etc etc.

Ojukwu and co did none of that. They just used propaganda to deceive Igbos that the federal troops were coming to kill everybody, so let us use what we can to fight them, including cutlasses, catapaults, and dane guns.

Just total myopia and thoughtlessness - the very same naivety displayed by IPOB today, when they go disturbing British and US politicians to help them actualize Biafra. The same people who want Nigeria to be one at all costs!

If they had working brains, they would approach say China, or even North Korea, or Cuba, in secret negotiations. But no. It is TRUMP they are looking to as their ''saviour'' - a British ally!

There was no prior intent of secession in the bone marrow of Ojukwu and his henchmen. However a drastic situation called for drastic measures. Anybody who saw the level of massacre meted to Ndigbo and Biafrans in northern region of Nigeria even to those who tend to deny the situation will support any action against aggressors even if it was a mere cough. If the situation had allowed the eastern region to think it through, there could have not been war. By the way, what right does the Gowon and Nigerians have to perpetrate war of attrition on people who just wanted to live sepeatetly from the rest of Nigerians? Did the war stop the hunger to secede or did exacerbate the situation? Maybe there is another war in making because the hunger to secede from the shithole called Nigeria is even more potent now than in 1967. Bear in mind that no country has ever survived second war.

I had rather standup to a bully than to whimper. The bolded goes to tell how foolish you have eaten to the silly propaganda. Most of Chinese liberation soldiers under Mao did not have footwear. Ndigbo and Biafrans who fought against " thoughtless slave and robot" according to you, who were spurred by the colonists such as Britain did so for honor and dignity only known to mankind. I guess it takes on Ewu to recognize another.

It unfortunate you have demonstrated your idiocy in the ongoing discuss. You called someone a "Small Boy" and alleged the person did not see the war. The person asked for your unit in either Biafran armed forces or even Nigerian armed forces during the war, instead you leaped into series of insults with nothing to show you even heard the correct story of war talk less participate in the war. I guess the forum should institute some forms of restriction to stop navigation to the site by certain goons who could not cross a busy carriageway without adult supervision.

Come on shut your trap. Those who lose a war go back to the drawing board and decide where they went wrong. You? No. You were perfect in your strategy. Which was why you lost 2 million people and your leader fled.

Stop LYING that you had no choice but to fight a war to ''defend yourself''. Defend yourself against what? The war did not start until your dictator declared secession. THAT was what precipitated war. So take that ''self defence'' lie and stick it up your asss.

You have no shame. You went and participated in a war in which your fellow fighters wore bathroom slippers and used matchetes.

You think from one part of your brain. What Ojukwu fought for and lost 2 millions of his kind is still a potent Matter after 50yrs and you still ask why did he went to war in the first place . He fought a war to make a statement ..
He lost yes. A fool who never tried will never succeed. What is happening today .. Who is in IDP camps .. Who is is begging for succession. You think the igbos are worst off in this present Nigeria. Wake up from your dreams. What your fathers fought for 50yrs ago was only a pipe dream.

There was no prior intent of secession in the bone marrow of Ojukwu and his henchmen. However a drastic situation called for drastic measures. Anybody who saw the level of massacre meted to Ndigbo and Biafrans in northern region of Nigeria even to those who tend deny the situation will support any action against aggressors even if it was mere cough...

You are a LIAR. Ojukwu had his eyes on cornering the OIL that had just been discovered in commercial quantities in the Niger Delta. THAT was his real reason for wanting secession, using the northern pogroms as his excuse. There was no reason to declare secession due to the northern massacres, terrible as they were.

Sure, if you had a proper military or weapons, you could afford the luxury of declaring secession. But with no military capacity, you simply lick your wounds and carry on, even after the pogrom. Afterall the estimated 50,000 Igbos that were killed up north is much preferable to 2 million dead Igbos, is it not?

Right. So he sacrificed 2 million Igbo lives in order to ''make a statement''. I rest my case.

One thing I've noticed among you Igbo warmongers is that you don't actually value the lives of your fellow Igbos. Their lives mean nothing to you. 2 million dead? 3 million dead? Means nothing to you. They are expendable in your quest to satiate your hatred of Nigeria. May God forgive you. Gowon loved the Igbos more than you IPOB warmongers ever did, or ever could. Hopefully, the Igbo majority would one day, grow some sense, and rid you bloodthirsty illiterates from their midst.

It is unfortunate people have to deal with a person who demonstrated an intellect below that of a Monkey. I know must Nigerians such as you have no use of empirical approach to issue hence Nigeria continued in the slippery path of idiocy. Gowon had assumed fractured country with a section that refused to recognize his leadership. Yet the fool went ahead and proclaimed on May 27, 1967 that he has divided Nigeria into 12 states ending what was know as federalism in Nigeria. Three days later, Ojukwu declared eastern region a republic of Biafra. Why would Gowon send column of Nigerian solders to invade Biafra on July 6, 1967? Mr. Ewu, I would want a honest answer even though such act hardly come from Ewu.

Judge your post with whats happening today. What igbos could have gained going to war trumped what they lost, reason they recovered quickly and adapted to the New Nigeria. I am not trumpeting for another war but common sense should have told you if igbos did not rise and fought back.. Pogrom of 1966 would have happened back to back and nothing would happen.

Every other thing you wrote doesn't fit in and especially your second paragraph which I'd have delved into more but time restraint.

All in all, Ojukwu still messed up, as at 1968, cities and towns like Abakaliki, Enugu, Nsukka, Udi, Awka, Onitsha, Aba, PH, Akwa-Cross area, old Rivers etc had all fallen to federal forces, the same Biafra was just a small enclave surrounded by Nigeria and shrinking everyday, what was Ojukwu still stupidly fighting for?
Why still subjecting those not yet under the federal forces to starvation and death? Why not surrender in 1968 and stop the carnage? He had to wait till 1970 when millions more had died before he went into exile and told Effiong to announce his surrender........ rubbish.
How will what he wrote fit in to you, when you are one-sided and hypocritical.

Thank you very much for this comment.

@Rossippi...

May God almighty bless the Igbos and the Igbo nation....

What does this pile of trash you've written have to do with the core issue raised on this thread, ie the order from Gowon to Nigerian troops to stop the slaughter?

You've written a whole epistle that totally evades the thrust of the thread, and you expect to be taken seriously?

This is not about whether you like Hausa-Fulanis or not.

Please, read the first post again, this time with your brain switched on.

And if you cannot respond sensibly to the FACTS STATED THEREIN, kindly get lost.

Low IQ mosquito brain. Ojukwu had NO RIGHT to declare a ''Republic of Biafra''.

First of all he was a military dictator. His declaration was not subjected to any political processes.

You are obviously an unschooled person to think a military colonel can just wake up one day and artbitarily secede from a country without debate, without negotiation, just by saying ''we secede!'

Where in the world does that happen?

NAME ONE instant that that has happened anywhere on earth?

Oya, go and declare secession today, let us see if your death toll will not hit 10 million.

Not that you care anyway. Did Ojukwu care that his irrational act would lead to millions of Igbo deaths?

Did Ojukwu go to those villages to warn the old women that they would starve and die in his coming battle, for which he had no weapons?

Of course not. Or they would have told him, ''no war''.

Instead, he lied to the people that they could defeat Nigeria with their cutlasses and matchets.

He lied to them that Nigerian troops were heading to the east to kill everyone. A BLATANT LIE FROM THE PITS OF HELL.

None of you Biafran warmongers care about the Igbo people. To you, their lives are expendable.

Load of rubbish.

NOBODY HATED IGBOS IN NIGERIA.

Igbos settled in Hausaland and Yorubaland in their millions even before independence. Apart from a brief skirmish in the north in the 50s, nobody harassed Igbos in Nigeria, or discriminated against them.

Igbos were in fact FAVOURED by other Nigerians and respected for their industry and education. Igbos held political positions and top civil service positions in the north and the west, and nobody cared. Nobody opposed or harassed them.

This whole thing started when a group of Igbo army officers, led by Major Nzeogwu, went around in 1966, KILLING the duly elected Northern Prime Minister of Nigeria, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, and killing Northern and Yoruba leaders, including the religious leader of the North, Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto! And leaving all Igbo leaders alone, safe. Untouched.

This outraged the rest of the nation. Then Ironsi, an Igbo general, came to power, following those killings.

Nigerians expected that Ironsi would bring the klllers to justice.

They sent him message after message, for 7 months, to bring the killers to justice.

He did nothing.

He just left the killers to walk free!

Yet they were millions of Igbos living in the north!

After 7 or 8 months of Ironsi's inaction, the northerners had had enough of this insult upon injury, this huge spit on their collective faces, and responded in a VERY PREDICTABLE WAY, by targeting Igbos in their midst. Northern officers then staged a counter-coup that killed Ironsi.

How can you slaughter the Prime Minster, plus their religious and political leaders, and ignore the murders, while millions of your people reside in their land making money?

I am actually surprised that only 40 or 50,000 Igbos were killed.

If I was a Hausa muslim man, I would have definitely targeted Igbos around me.

If YOU were in their shoes, YOU would have done the same. And the same goes for all these IPOB goats we have today, with their holier than thou horse shiit.

So, following the massacre of Igbos in the north, Ojukwu now claimed that the ''evil Nigerian vandals'' were heading to the east to kill all Igbos, a blatant lie.

And then he declared secession. Real intent? To steal and corner the newly discovered oil reserves in the Niger Delta.

He didn't secede with just his Igboland.

He included the South South, who had no business in any of this.

That shows you his real objective was to corner the nation's oil resources newly discovered.

It is the same reason Igbos today include the South South in their 'Biafra' madness, even against the wishes of the Deltans. To corner those oil resources.

THAT is their true aim of secession.

THIS IS THE FULL TRUTH.

That is why they don't care how many millions of Igbos are killed in their quest for separation.

It's all about GREED FOR OIL.

Anything else these narcissistic warmongers are telling you is merely to confuse and bamboozle you.

Now you know the truth. If you like, keep lying to yourself.

Amadu Bello, Balewa, Akintola and Okotie Eboh was killed by Nzeogwu and his gangs including
Yoruba officers, and they were not elected so cannot be said to have carried the mandate of the generality of Igbos. So what concerns Igbos with the actions of military men?
During the pogrom, they retaliated against Igbo military officers, why kill thousands of civilians who were not in the army? Gowon started the war but know the Biafra will come to pass!
