Emir Sanusi is a lone voice crying in the 'wilderness' of change, saying CHANGE YE NORTHERN LEADERS and invest in positive human capital development and reform outdated socio-cultural/economic systems because your people are being left behind and the consequences of inaction will be much worse than robbery, kidnapping and armed banditry. The magnitude and impact of the inevitable uprising will be better imagined than experienced. Take a cue from the conservative Saudi Arabia, which has realised that reforms are necessary to catch up with neighbours like UAE.

Will they listen? Will they continue to loathe the messenger and his message? The choice is theirs to make, just as the blame will be theirs to bear when the cup fills up. Time is running out fast!

P.S: This is not saying that Southern leaders are doing wonders but the situation in the North is dire.

The myth about Northerners not valuing education is all lies, they just have the most wicked Fulani led leaders,
All their kids attend the best schools in the world (Buhari,El Rufa,Sanusi included) and then turn around to build mosques and madrasas for the masses.

Now we are using more money to fight their children than spend on our children's future.

Emir Sanusi is just like every other Nigerian politician saying one thing and doing the opposite. As cbn governor Emir Sanusi did nothing in the North to improve the education and eradicate alamjiri system now he's talking. When he was newly crowned Emir, his wealthy and influential friends asked what they can do to support him. He didn't ask for funding of education for some kids under his emirate, He didn't ask for health care facilities in his Emirate etc, He asked them to buy him a new Rolls Royce because He can't afford to use the Rolls Royce in the palace as it is out dated . Talk is cheap that's what I learnt with Buhari 2015 'Change ' campaign. The Emir is preaching what He will never practice. Funny enough Nigerians can trust so easily that's why we're so easy to manipulate.

The North does not rely on the quota system, they take almost 80% of available federal government jobs
Re: Emir Sanusi: North Cannot Continue To Rely On Quota System by wink2015(m): 9:17am On Feb 18, 2020
Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi II has warned the North will destroy itself if it does not change its current status and address the challenges of poverty, millions of out- of- school children, malnutrition, a drug problem and Boko Haram insurgency.

The Emir said no recent leader of the North can afford to be happy in the face of the multitude of challenges confronting the region.

He stated this in Kaduna on Monday at an event marking the 60th birthday of Governor Nasir Ahmed El-Rufa’i.

Sanusi said leaders must follow the example of El-Rufa’i by investing in the education of the Northern children, which he said, is the only thing that will save the region.

He lamented over 87 per cent of poverty in Nigeria is in the north while millions of northern children are out of school.

According to him, nine states in the north “contribute almost 50 per cent of the entire malnutrition burden in Nigeria. There is a drug problem, Almajiri problem and Boko Haram problem in the North.”

He, however, said leaders of the region must move away from doing things the old way, which had produced the same negative results to investing in education, nutrition and primary healthcare.

Emir Sanusi also cautioned the North cannot continue to rely on a quota system and federal character to get jobs for its children at the expense of the other parts of the country, which are busy turning out graduates.

According to him: “When we talk about birthday, we talk about happiness. Just last week, someone asked me, are you happy? And I said I am not. And the person was surprised. The truth is, nobody who is a leader in Northern Nigeria today can afford to be happy.

“You cannot be happy about 87 per cent of poverty in Nigeria being in the north. You can’t be happy with millions of Northern children out of school. You can’t be happy with nine states in the North contributing almost 50 per cent of the entire malnutrition burden in the country.

“You can’t be happy with the drug problem, you can’t be happy with the Boko Haram problem. You can’t be happy with political thuggery. You can’t be happy with all the issues; the Almajiri problem that we have.

“So, we wish Nasir a happy birthday but we do not want him to be happy as a leader. Because you are happy when you think you have reached a state of delivering and taking your people to where you want them to be.”

Sanusi added: “Now, because of the condition of Northern Nigeria, it is almost correct now to say that, if you are seen as normal, if you are a governor in the North or a leader in the North, and you are seen as normal in the sense that you continue to do what your predecessors have been doing, doing the same thing, which has been normalised, then, there is something wrong with you, you are part of the problem.

“The real change in the north will come from those who are considered mad people, because you look around and say if this is the way we have been doing things, and this is where we have ended up, maybe we need to do things differently.

“If we have populated the government with middle-aged men, maybe we need to try younger people, maybe we need to try women. If we have spent our money and time on physical structures, maybe we need to invest more in the education of our children. Maybe we need to invest more in nutrition. Maybe we need to invest more in primary healthcare.

“And the truth is if you look at what Nasir is doing in Kaduna, with 40 per cent of his budget in education, that is the only thing that is going to save the North. I know that, when we say these things, they don’t go down well.

“We have been saying this for 20 to 30 years. If the North does not change, the North will destroy itself. The country is moving on. The quota system that everybody talks about must have a sunset clause.

“The reason that people like Nasir stand up and they are nationalists is that they don’t have any sense of inadequacy. You don’t need to rise on being from Kaduna State or being from the North or being a Muslim to get a job, you come with your credentials, you go with your competence, you can compete with any Nigerian from anywhere.”

He went on: “We need to get our northern youths to a point where they don’t need to come from a part of the country to get a job. And believe me, if we don’t listen, there would be a day when there would be a constitutional amendment that addresses these issues of a quota system and federal character.

“The rest of the country cannot be investing, educating its children, producing graduates and then they watch us, they can’t get jobs because they come from the wrong state when we have not invested in the future of our own children.

“So, as we celebrate Nasir at 60, we need to celebrate him as a public officer who is addressing the core problems of his constituency. It is education, it’s girl child education, it’s women’s right, it’s child begging, it parental irresponsibility, demographic growth, it’s managing a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and multi-religious society and bringing them into one community where they are all citizens and he has done a lot that we can learn from.

“We have just heard how he has developed himself over the years, he is a Surveyor, he is a lawyer, he has got Masters degrees, he has had over 80 certificates from Havard because education is what makes a man.”

They don't and it will be impossible for them to do that.
Actually, southerners are more than northerners in most of the ministry and parastatals. It is logical because southerners are far educated than them and if the quota system was not introduced the ratio will be so embarrassing the northern would hardly be represented in any ministry.

What you will say is currently, most of the key positions are held by northerners due to Buhari nepotistic tendency and when another government comes into power he too will as a matter of interest put his people into this position. Reasons, why our over a centralized system of government which is winners takes all will not take us anywhere. Without restructuring and devaluation of means of production and distribution to States or ethnic blocks, Nigeria will continue to move in a circle.

Why wouldn't you look at his message rather than attacking his personality?

The Alaafin of Oyo has numerous wives and children while the generality of Yorubas don't practice polygamous or give birth to children that they can't train. These people are a traditional institution, they should be given some pass

All he does is talk, and more talk.

Keep talking, Ganduje is listening.

What do you want him to do to help?

He is a ceremonial traditional and religious leaders that people come to for guidance and advice, he can only guild and advise his people on the best ways to live life in these challenges modern time.

The tax, allocation of the state is not paid to him so he can only call the general populace attention to happening in his domain

Sharing money to poor relatives will put these relatives into a bigger mess when they finished this money.

You don't develop or take people out of poverty by merely sharing money without the skill and mentality to get out of it. The more money you give to poor people the more wives, adj and responsibility they will add to themselves

myobjective:

Why would you place all the blames at the feet of the political leaders?

What about the sense of responsibilities of men that have more wives and children than they can manage, resulting in a high rate of divorce, out of school children and general decay in our society?

What about the old age disdain for education which has been propagated by years of religious propaganda and the lack of care for the girl child, their education and the role they should play in modern society?

Were these leaders also responsible in turning the north into a dumping ground where all foreign religious ideologies are dumped no matter how ridiculous or incompatible with our current prevalent economic and social situation?

Answers to this question will point us to the direction we need to be heading as a nation.

That masses of the north have failed themselves and their region due to their laziness, religious intolerance and their inability to rise beyond their narrow world view

Its the sad truth that is being said. I travelled by road to kotangora last week and i was amazed at the number of children and youths i saw from village to village that were out of school.
I couldn't hold back my worry, i had to ask the people, why are children not in school?
Their excuse was lack of dedication of the techers. I was told that when some children go to school, there are no teachers. This teacher ride "kabukabu" and return to school around 1pm.
Here in the southwest its like a taboo to see a child at home on weekdays, 90% of children are in school.
These out of school children daily gamble their future and its amazing how their parents appeared not to be worried, atleast they know the
"quota" rubbish will fix their half baked child in NNPC, EFCC, ABUJA whereas the so called educated south-westerners nd south-easterners will scramble to get jobs.
Naijeeria my country!
