Eta Mbora, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member of the house of representatives, has introduced a bill seeking to provide automatic employment for graduates after their National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.

The legislation seeks to amend the NYSC act to enable the military, paramilitary agencies and other special services recruit willing graduates immediately after they have completed the one-year youth service.

The amendment bill scaled first reading at the green chamber on Thursday.

The NYSC act, as it currently is, does not provide any employment window for youth corps members after the programme.

In an interview with TheCable on Friday, the lawmaker, who represents Calabar Munincipal/Odukpani federal constituency of Cross River state, said the bill will help address Nigeria’s unemployment problem.

He said if passed into law, it would help graduates desirous of joining the military, paramilitary agencies or special services to do so after they have completed their NYSC programme, provided they meet the agencies’ requirements.

“At the conclusion of their service year, there should be a process where the agencies will examine those interested to determine their qualifications to be employed,” he said.

“They should be able to now enrol them after the completion of service; that is for those qualified. That way, it can address the unemployment problem and job scams in Nigeria.

“Those willing to join the military and paramilitary agencies and other special services should be able to do so since they have served their country.”

Mbora added that the bill seeks to officially increase the allowance of corps members to cater to their needs.

He said although the federal government recently increased the allowance, the action is not backed by the law and will only be legal with the amendment.

Despite being Africa’s biggest economy, Nigeria’s unemployment rate is very high. It rose to 23.1 percent at the third quarter of 2018.

The federal government has sought various remedies to check this trend, including introducing through schemes like the N-Power programme, but there is still a big gap.

Hmmm. Wia Dem go employ them?

If the content of the bill includes a penalty for non compliance(like the govt. paying every graduate d amount they were paid during NYSC for the period they are waiting) , then it makes sense. Otherwise it's just another numerous bills

Abroad; six months before graduation, there is employment funfairs which qualifies for an interview in an organization.
That way the rate of unemployment is brought low after graduation.
I believe this is a good idea, except when nepotism and favoritism starts to be practised.

Keep having sleepless nights because of my posts.

Okay cool let assume his parents are poor they couldn't take care of him according to your irrational thinking. But from all indication he is going to be great.

Back to the topic the bill will not see the light of day.
In the sense that it majorly focuse on military and paramilitary job. Both military and paramilitary ministries have institutions for their training officers. The ministries wouldn't hesitate to tell the lawmakers that they have enough man power.

Such bills is good to the ears, if implemented, governments will be busy cause they have to create more jobs

Let's see how it will be handled. I hope it will generate alot of publicity like the anti-social bill generated undecided

Let's see if they will take it serious and find a way for it to work!!!

This is laudable, unlike the bill seeking agency for repentant bokoharam.

It's left to be seen how it can be implemented with the current system we have in place and the quota system arrangement.

Abi na to dey produce while they themselves go dey patronize other country

You can't ask us to produce rice and patronize our own

While we produce cars and you buy from other country

How are they growing our GDP

simple mathematics its not economically feasible even if we don't have politician, so long our income largely is on 2mbpd crude oil

even if we sell at $100 a barrel, 2million barrels a day average (which we don't even achieve) gives us about $73billion annually

Introducing a bill in one thing, implementing it is another thing. We know this is audio introduction and won't be implemented until the era of our grand children.

It's simple logic!!!

If government can live extravagantly on 2mbpd crude oil

They can make electricity stable, build Good roads, provide basic social amenities!!!

There are some countries without crude oil and they are not over taxing their citizens and they are doing well!!!

Their leaders are not greedy, they ensure their citizens see what they are paying for via tax

And we have the population

So what is this much Ado about crude oil afterall Buhari has been shouting diversification undecided

So what's the problem

When records are taken, this one too would be counted as having raised a bill in the HOR.
This bill is borne out of illiteracy and the childish aim to also have his name as one of the contributors on the floor of the house.

*It's simple logic!!!... Its not except you are Naïve on how finance works

*If government can live extravagantly on 2mbpd crude oil--- Poverty make Nigerians think a federal house of rep driving a camry 2020 as official car which US students drive, or Toyota SUV which mid incomers drive in US is extravagant, ... its all in the mind

*They can make electricity stable, build Good roads, provide basic social amenities!!!--- most infrastructure cost real dollars, inter region rail cost billions of dollars, and a mere 1mw of gas plant would cost 400m USD without feeder gas pipeline infrastructure, even if we empty our forieng reserve we can get our infrastructural deficit right without borrowing atleast 50 billion usd

*There are some countries without crude oil and they are not over taxing their citizens and they are doing well!!!--- I bet you rely on nonsense they feed you, try paying tax in UK, US , Canada or any other countries that borrowed to fix its infrastructure and then come and repeat this

*So what's the problem what moved Singapore from poor to rich country is investement in infrastructure and rising its debt to GDP to 150% when Nigeria has less than 20%, same as Dubai and US they borrow heavily for infrastructure then the citizens can now expand their creativity and earn taxable income

No! Is there any need? Afterall we ain't boko haram so I don't think there's need for that.

But on another note, the number of graduates exceeds the opportunities in every establishment in this country.

Since government are bereft of knowledge on how to create riches, let them organise an open investment idea that will create job and every entry worth it will be taken over by the government and the proposer will be groomed to become the manager.

I would have written on tourism and the idea would have been adopted I believe.

Good initiative.

We won't like to say more than this for now,
no need going back to the wasted 16 years of locust in our darling country.
Had it been this thieving party started this then,
perhaps......
