It's difficult to swallow that an indigenous people does not have a name for a place belonging to them, except that place does not in fact belong to them.

Portharcourt was so named by luguard in 1912. Before the Christening, the area was called Igweocha by the natives. No wonder till this day some people in Elele will rather say "I am going to Igweocha" than saying "I am going to Port Harcourt"

On the contrast, Yoruba's fiercely lay claim to Lagos. But I do not know or have not heard about its Yoruba name. Maybe there simply isn't . I hope I would be proved wrong. This is because "Lagos" is a name that takes after a port in Portugal and was given by the Portuguese. Eko the only known native name is an Edo name (meaning war camp) given by the Benin kingdom.

I need Yoruba to tell us, What is the Yoruba name of Lagos?

The Original land on which the Sea Port that was later called 'Portharcourt' was built was called Igweocha. It was the farmlands of the Ikwerre people of Diobu. That a city emerged from the creation of this Port and the city took the name of this Port what is being debated. Most Ikwerre people still refer to the city of Portharcourt as Igweocha, the original area from which the city and port began.

When people talk about Ikwerre and Igbo I laugh. What is the difference between an Ikwerre man, an Nsukka man, an Ngwa man or an an Abakiliki man? Nothing except the minor differences in dialect.

They all speak a language that belongs to the Niger-Congo family called Igbo. It doesnt matter if the Ikwerre, Ngwa, Abakiliki man or Nsukka man all decide to have a bible in their dialect, an Ijekebe msn like me from Anambra will read and understand all their bibles because they are all Igbo. The Ngwa people can rise up tomorrow and decide for political reasons that they are not Igbo but they wouldn't be fooling anyone as their ancestral language and surnames are all Igbo. Same goes for the Ikwerre

One Ikwerre called Elechi Amadi will say he is not an Igbo man, another Ikwerre man called Chibuike Amaechi will go on national Tv to say he is Igbo. An Ikwerre man called Uche Okwukwu is the Secretary General of Ohanaeze

So which Ikwerre is Igbo and which is not?

That Igweocha tale is Made in ABA,null and void ,of no effect whatsoever

It is established that Ikwerre is a related but distinct language from Igbo. I refer you to the landmark research of Kay Williamson

Hello flattie

Lemme help you a bit. Every town or city that has original Yorubas have not only a name but an oriki. So, let me give you the Yoruba oriki of Lagos
Eko akete ilu ogbon Eko akete, aromisa legbelegbe. I'm sure you get the gist now. Like someone told you. Eko means to pack something in Yoruba. It might have another meanin in Edo but there is nothing in its history to suggest it was ever a war camp. However, it was known to be a trading outpost even before the Portuguese between the inhabitants and the mainland people who come to trade with the inhabitants.

The Yoruba name is EKO ATA from where the simple version EKO was derived.

Port Harcourt was NEVER called Igweocha.
That is a lie from the Pit of hell.

Like all lies if ignored and repeated often it becomes a truism

Port Harcourt originally referred to the Port full stop. As development came and the area developed into a city all the villages around became subsumed in what we now call Port Harcourt

These are villages around Diobu Ogbunabali all the way to to Rebisi Elelenwo and Woji.
There are hundreds of villages in Obio Akpor and Rebisi e.g Rumubiakani Rumuomasi Rumueme Rumuadaolu Rumuola Rumuogba etc mostly Ikwerre whilst a few places have Ijaw names e.g. Borokiri, Abuloma.

There is nothing like Igweocha anywhere. Those who propagate this lie do not know PH.

There is no place that does not have a name. So where exactly is this "Igweocha" ?

These desperate folk have gone to the extent of writing fake stories on Wikipedia but a simple question busts their lie.

Which place exactly in PH is called Igweocha?

Igweocha is the term used by later Igbo immigrants to Port Harcourt but the Natives didn't call their villages Igweocha.

This is just like Igbos call London Obodo Oyinbo but this doesn't mean 'Obodi Oyinbo' is a valid name for London.

you are a victim of your own people's propaganda. "idu" means "Edo". Anywhere in Lagos that has such prefix, bears strong testament of Edo ancestral lordship of Lagos.

The Edo's and Yorubas have long historical interactions, not only on the Island of Lagos but in many areas.

The Edos influenced, ruled and settled in some parts of Lagos just as the British did in centuries later but today, neither the Edos nor the British can be regarded as owing anywhere in Lagos.

No part of Lagos belongs to Edo. If you know any part of Lagos owned by Edo kindly name it let's hear. grin

The British were NOT the first to settled in Nigeria.

Different Empires, Kingdoms and Villages existed in Nigeria and were called different names in different parts.

What the British only did was to bring these different Empires/Kingdoms and Villages together under one authority.

This is very similar to what the Bini soldiers did in what later became known as Lagos.

Before the Coming of the Binis, different Idejo clans controlled different parts of the Islands.

It was the Binis soldiers led by Ashipa (whom the Binis called Eksheripa) that brought everybody together under a monachial rule affliated to the Bini Monarchy.

Stop saying nonsense,

Eko is the native Yoruba Name for Lagos Island (Erekusi Eko).

Camp= Ago (Bini)= Ago (Yoruba).

Okun(Bini)= Okun (Yoruba)= Sea.

During the 15th century, both Bini and Yorubas spoke a common ( or similar) tongue and didn't need interpreters to communicate.

So where did you hear that EKO means camp in Bini language?
