Abeg make we hear word. How many cities are in Ivory coast? One or two maximum. Please spare us that rubbish. As for Biafra, she made weapons out of desperation cos no one else would sell her weapons. This ''ingenuity'' nonsense smacks of racial inferiority complex. We take Asian and European manufacturing for granted, but when Africans do it it shows ''ingenuity''? What's that about?

And there is really nothing to suggest that Biafra would have been especially productive, given the huge oil wealth that would have accrued to the govt and relatively small population. Necessity is the mother of invention. Huge oil wealth removes the 'necessity' for 'invention' when you can just import everything, like Saudi Arabia or UAE.

Most times, countries that got independence by fighting wars tend to have better leaders than those that did not.

Well, the reason is that the people who died in the war for independence will always compel the leaders to do well.

If you read Achebe's books on how they started fashioning out modalities to fix Biafra, there was no way Biafra would not have been better than the Nigeria of today.

Besides, many Nigerians, not just the Igbos, have given up on this country. No country works if her people don't believe in her

Actually, you are right but also wrong. Yes, Nigeria in 2018 was the largest economy before ceding to SA. SA has now fallen behind. The news article in link below is actually as recent as yesterday !!

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-03/nigeria-now-tops-south-africa-as-the-continent-s-biggest-economy
same useless Bloomberg that put out a fake story in 2015 that south Africa was Africa's largest economy in 2015 and letter retrieved it!!!

Do the maths, in April 2020 Nigeria's economy was over .5 trillion dollar GDP. And south Africa was merely 3 hundred-and-something billion dollars same period.

Now how did South Africa economy gained over over 100 billion dollars in GDP evrvv it had been under recession must of the time and never seeing growth over 1% from 2014?

Mind you, mathematically, so South Africa to leapfrog Nigeria's GDP, it has to grow its economy over 5% for years! Because a larger GDP doing 2% growth is still performing better than a smaller GDP doing 3%.

So how did South Africa perform the GDP miracle to over take Nigeria when it's economy has been crawling since 2014?

Only Bloomberg has the answer!

Don't mention gaining Independence please. If South Africa is still being ruled by the white, they would be experiencing this backward situation now.

If whites have continued ruling Nigeria side 1960. . We would have galloped into advancements....

Lol so you 're boldly saying that Black Africans can't rule themselves? Who did this to us? Lol

But judging by what Mandela achieved when he was the President, Judging by what Thabo Mbeki achieved when he was ruling, you would agree with me that they did great as black presidents. Zuma was the one who put South Africa in this current situation which the current President Ramaphosa is struggling to solve. My point is even with the blacks in South African Government, they 're still doing great things. Maintaining their roads, clean water, government hospitals, service delivery and so on. I'm a Nigerian and I love Nigeria with all my heart. But untill you travel outside Naija, you nor go know how bleeped up Nigerian politicians are.. I will take it that you have so little knowledge about South Africa!

South Africa has a 100 years head start over Nigeria. She has a very developed mining industry which was developed by the British in the early 19th century, bigger landmass, well-developed manufacturing sectors for over 100 years. So, how is Nigeria richer than South Africa?

Nigerians are living in fool paradise, unaware of the enormous task they need to carry out to position their country on the part of growth. Filled with an entitlement mentality that they don't plan, work hard enough, pay tax, want all the subsidy in this world and wail endlessly when things are not going well.

The line of thinking that 2million barrel of crude oil will automatically turn Nigeria into a powerhouse is laughable

You have a strong argument, however, you quickly forget countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE, Russia, etc. who have all changed the fortune of their countries and made them top economies solely from the proceeds of oil.

I still maintain my argument that Nigeria ought to be miles ahead of South Africa.

No sir, the last time I checked, Saudi Arabia has a population of 27m people with 12m barrel of crude oil production since the 1947. UAE has a population of less than 10m people with with over 1m barrel of crude. These two countries can't be compared to Nigeria

If Biafra were independent nation from 1966 to date, the country will be dragging economic might with Asian tigers like China, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia etc, not South Africa. Biafra would have launch Africa positively on the world map as a black economy powerhouse. A people that could organized themselves to manufacture Amoured tanks and spectacular weapons from scratch to hold Nigeria for 3 good years to the amazement of America and Europe shows the ability and ingenuity of Biafrans. Biafra would have join the like of America and Russia as major arms suppliers in the world!
Now imagine them channeling that same energy and spirit to develop their country economically? The black race would have gain more respect today. But because of the virus of One Nigeria, that reality was dashed - (but not forever, Biafra will raise again).
Nigeria is nothing but a glorified village. A country cursed with mediocrity, terrorism, quota system, and the ''Put them down Syndrome.''
Nigeria can't even boast of a world class city. Countries like Ivory Coast have better and well developed cities than Nigeria.
The fact that the God forsaken country is even struggling economically with South Africa is a big shame because Nigeria's economy was on the same level with South Korea in 1960. Today South Korea is not only competing with China, the country has world class companies competing with the likes of Apple and General Mottors of America! And we here celebrating mediocrity. What's the benefit of being Africa's largest economy when we can't even manufacture pencils? Does Nigeria have a functional steel company? How can Nigeria become an industrial manufacturing hub when common Abeokuta steel complex is in shambles? Nigeria is nothing but a failed state!
South Africa's economy, as it is even in recession is still by far more robust and developed in manufacturing, service industry, commerce, power, infrastructure than Nigeria. Remove crude oil from the country's economy and Nigeria will disappear from the world map!
Total division of Nigeria is the only way out of this perennial economic calamity that is Nigeria.
ONE NIGERIA IS DEAD!
90% of weapons used by Biafran soldiers were supplied by France and Angola.
you can confirm that from your ancestors.

It is more complex than that.
The apartheid South Africa really messed up the country, living the majority of the population poorly educated and unable to contribute to the modern economy.

Apartheid South Africa was only built for 10m white and to some extend Indian immigrant why the majority of black South Africans who were the majority lives in abject poverty. It requires more effort to bring these poor, uneducated, unproductive majority out of poverty. Reasons why it very hard for the government to continuously maintained the poformerce recorded by the apartheid gov't.

Corruption is a also a factor. Government bureaucracies are corrupt all over the world and it is worst in developing countries without the institution to check and balance.

Finally, South Africa major problem is lack of educated manpower than can propel her into the next face.

Which weight? Nigeria should be about 5 times South Africa's economy.
What is the development index: poverty rate, average income, life expectancy at birth, child and maternal mortality, literacy rate etc?

Randomly pick 1,000 Nigerians and ask make them choose between staying in Nigeria and living in the Tiny countries of Monaco, Luxembourg, Andora, Iceland, etc. These countries are living the good life with visa free to all countries that matters.

Who sneezing help? shocked

Apartheid is long gone, blacks have been in power for close to 25 years, how long did it take Japan, China, South Korea, Russia and Germany to rebuild their country after the destruction of the second world war. Let's stop making excuses for bad and greedy leadership.

Millions of Blacks are still living in shanty towns and shacks, what is the government policies on rural-urban development, if not that they are busy hosting the FIFA world cup, buying expensive military weapons and building power plants that don't work.

I’m not an economist but I can only make assessments based on global statistics. I think maybe there a case for economic growth. However, an economy can still be good, while it people are suffering. Maybe i’m wrong. I think if you want to understand the nature of economics you might want to find the most relevant economist, atleast still living today.

I think there are different ways an economy can be successful ,different models. I know singapore is free capital and has a good economy. However, since i’m a laymen I would gravitate to a more eurocentric view since from the surface view that i know that makes sense.

I was waiting for this usual type of comment. South Africa is simply experiencing tough economic times, it happens..a white country like Greece experienced the same thing not long ago, don't bring race and your inferiority complex in to this, mind you South Africa's best economic performance was under Thabo Mbeki, a black president. In essence, Nigeria is facing way too many challenges which has negatively affected the development of the country. We should normally be miles ahead of South Africa.
