Hello guys... For those who want to do a micro setup, using a PWM c, you should get a better efficiency using a dc-dc buck converter.... Especially some of those ones that have been fine tuned for pv use...it may not be as efficient as MPPT CC but will be better than normal PWM. Without the bells and whistles too at same price or even cheaper sometimes.

Aliexpress has them

Na time i no get i for don play with these options and see how they perform in real life...

Cheers!

Buying a good charge controller!
Basic difference between an MPPT and a PWM
Is the mathematics of power conversion

For instance; When a 200 watts 36v panel sends power to a PWM Charge controller @ 24v
5amps this Charge controller will only pick 24v and 5amps and waste the remaining 12v (36-24v)

But for a good, I sound this again an Original and not just that they wrote MPPT on the body, but original MPPT, minimises power loss and MaXimize power.

It converts the remaining 12v to amps so the charger then charges at 24v about 8amps so, we have only minimal power loss

The 20 KVA comes with the house so cannot be removed ( plus have to maintain it ) angry

My daily consumption is almost 50-70 Units Main house, BQ with two rooms kitchen plus security quarters -
It's like four families under one system ( i support my neighbor with water pumping and booster also smiley )

Don't look at the solar share as I keep my system in ESS mode with keep batteries charged mode so solar and battery used only when the grid fails - and the contributions from 10 KVA inverters is not captured
My dilemma is the NEPA is too low @22 NGN to justify running down battery cycles. especially when the NEPA is paid by the company

And yes all my bulbs, water pumps fridges etc are maxed out in terms of energy efficiency including switching off automatically on schedule or movement except the Plasma TV which the madam of the house refuses to change smiley

The Nigeria models for LPG are generic ones and will either run the engine too lean ( overheat) or too rich ( more consumption) There are many on Konga some as low as 7000 NGN

The model I posted is customized with the JET size for exactly the engine and frame size and does not void the warranty by Brigss and Stratton
and hopefully will not have any leakage issues
http://www.briggsandstratton.com/lam/pt/support/faqs/do-you-offer-any-conversion-kits-for-propane

I had the same problem with my generator batteries before. Now I use a small 20-watt panel with tiny charge controller. The added advantage it that the battery runs a small LED bulb( using charge controller Load side) in the night keeping the generator room lighted up for free smiley

Oga Pranil.

To my mind, your decision to keep 2 backup generators is more of multiple points of redundancy vs. necessity. What with at least 3 different battery banks incl. 48v 200ah Lithium and 4 or more inverters, I struggle to see how you could run out of battery backup on a good day grin

More like you just incorporated multiple failsafes and layers of redundancy in your system design as a super Pro-DIYer.

For the petrol to gas/propane conversion kits, we have quite a few local alternatives here in Naija and Ghana that retail under 30k all in - they were all the rave a year or two ago. I just found a random link online now

https:///amuwo-odofin/home-appliances/3-8-10kva-dual-fuel-conversion-gas-kit-for-lpg-generator-5257294.html.

In my case I have an 8kw petrol gen. In the last 1 year, I only use it to give batteries a top up charge before we take them to clients to install or more recently borrow out to my neighbors when their own generator breaks from constant (ab)use grin.

In fact such little use did it see that the starter battery sulphated and died after 2 years and it only came on on rare occasions.

I agree. I may only one of the few who is praying for cost of NEPA to go up so more people see the light and invest in solar ( not as a replacement of generator but something which makes commercial sense)

A diesel generator on average will cost 60 NGN/KWh considering diesel at 200 NGN/ltr. This is independent of diesel. Small diesels in the rage of 5 to 40 KVA will cots on top of that approximately 30 to 50 NGN /KWH depending on the load factor.
Considering with 3 KWH /KW of solar panel on average it takes 3-4 years before your investment starts making the profit . With correctly sized lithium this period dramatically reduces to 2 years a or less due to efficiency of Lithium

Sounds like something Fashola will say. Solar is an option that should be on the table for everyone. With proper planning you can make it work for you. Invest in the proper equipment upfront.
Battery technology has advanced beyond the stone age. We have Lithium Phosphate battery, Saltwater batteries and the Iron Edison style batteries that have in excess of 3000 cycles at 90%.
I currently use flooded batteries that have a duty cycle of 1500 at 50%. When they eventually die I will replace them with one of the batteries that I mentioned.
I don't have AC, however I have fans, TV, A freezer that runs 24 hours a day, a refrigerator that runs from 8 am to 5 pm daily. I have not used a generator in 2 years. Because of the unusual rainy and cloudy weather that we are experiencing in Lagos I will purchase a generator. I intend to run it for 4 hours a week to compensate for the deficit in production from my 2 kw in panels.

Ideally, most lead acid batteries are recommended charged at C/10. That is 100AH should be charged at 100/10= 10A which is a rule of thumb rule as some can take higher current, that is where smart chargers comes in. So in your setup it may be good or bad depending on the battery chemistry and the behaviour of chargers used.

Good morning

Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by LordGuru1: 7:18am On Mar 05, 2020
wirinet:

I am also looking at building Lipo4 battery packs for inverters as they far out perform lead acid. Replacing lead acid batteries every 1 to 2 years is making inverter and solar set up as expensive as running generator, thereby discouraging many people from going solar or acquiring inverter systems.

Your analysis is very good and details but with slight corrections.
The capacity of a lead acid battery is heavily dependent on the rate of discharge. The 200ah specified by the quanta battery is at a rate of discharge of C/20. Most inverter and solar set ups discharges at far less than C/20, most times its between C/5 and C/10. Most people neglect this little detail in calculating battery capacity for lead acid. This is why most people complain they get less capacity than written on the battery pack.

Even though Lipo4 also suffer some loss of capacity with rate of discharge it is very small compared to lead acid.

Another fact with liPo4 is that charging voltage and discharge voltage has a huge impact on cycle life. Nominal voltage for LiPo4 is 3.2v, while maximum voltage is 3.6v. Charging to a maximum of 3.5v can double cycle life. Same thing too for minimum discharge, minimum voltage is 2.5v, discharging to 2.6v can also greatly increase cycle life.

One problem with lead acid which I learnt through experience is power wastage. Lead acid wastes a lot of voltage while charging. This is noticeable with a solar set up. When I measure open voltage with a 100w, 5a solar panel I read 4.2a in direct sunlight, but when I measure current going into my lead acid battery, it is usually around 3.0a. I am losing a whole 1.2a just charging the lead acid battery. When I measure current when charging lithium phosphate, I get more than 4.0a. It seems the internal resistance of lead acid is far higher than that of Lipo4.

The draw back with lithium batteries is that they are unforgiving if you don't handle them well. They are prone to explosions and fire if you overcharge, undercharge or if out of balance. That why proper charger and balancer is crucial.

What is the max charge voltage of your Lithium battery bank?

If it is around 27v then any of those Telecomm float chargers e.g Emerson or Huawei should do you well. These can get up to 50A at 24v nominal.

If you want more precise control then the 24v *nominal* Axpert inverter types e.g Zinox or Gennex or the MPPSolar/Voltronic/AliExpress imports should do you well.

Your source may be referring to the containerized Zcell price of the combined unit ( 60 KWH upwards) for commercial applications
Zcell dropped by half in price in 2016 and with the new factory in Thailand it should still come down. 10 KWH is approx 8000 USD ( 2.5 to 3 million Naira)

https://www.energy-storage.news/news/redflow-halves-zbm-battery-costs-to-below-grid-price

Although note that You can only buy it currently in South Africa for installation IN South Africa

It seems South Africa are quite enjoying premium products available in their country.

They are probably the leaders of RE in Africa

Does it have anything to do with purchasing power?

Seller only want to make sales does not care about quality.
Even 5W panel will do grin

Solar may not be cheap, but worth it on a long run.

I started small as well, 80watts panel, 18Ah battery, 15Watts Yingli solar fan, 2 DC 5W 150LM bulb that only consume 2.5watta each. After real life experience, then I was able to deduce, how Solar set up actually works..

He has given you expo, just copy and paste the formula.

Maybe i should give the explanation.
My panels and battery gives me light(and TV) 24/7. Inverter is switched off overnight(since we don't need it) and comes back on 5:00 to 7:00 and is then switched off on way out to work in the morning until afternoon. So if I deplete the fan battery overnight, I want it fully charged by the time I get back from work. But inverter cant do that because it is off, hence my dilemma.

So I need independent panel to charge the fan(3) batteries OR wire direct from inverter battery to all fan battery terminals, thereby eliminate/remove completely the fan batteries.
