International Women's Day 2020: Each For Equal// My Thoughts. by bukatyne(f): 8:21pm On Mar 08, 2020
Today is International Women's Day themed Each for Equal and the air waves is filled with all sort of messages.

Even corporate organizations have keyed into it and there are all sorts of events to mark the day.

While all these are commendable and interesting (there is a pose for this year),

1. I really wish we get to a stage where we do not need multiple days to 'celebrate' or 'highlight' women: International Women's Day, Mother's Day (about two or three dates) and International Day of the Girl Child.

2. I wish women would not need to 'remind' themselves or be 'reminded' that they are strong. Tags like 'strong woman', 'independent woman', 'strong black woman', 'boss lady' means being a woman or lady is not enough. Anthony Joshua does not need validation/reminder that he is strong. His works have spoken for him.

3. I wish women would realize that they hold the keys to their achievement hence need to always make right choices of career, spouse, lifestyle, conduct etc. That they should always be ready to face the consequences (good/bad) of all their actions and decisions. That refusal to bear the consequences of our actions make us seem like perpetual victims or children.

4. I wish women would understand that this 'fight' cannot be won without the right circle and/or partners. That they cannot do it alone hence need to be very intentional about who they let into their lives.

5. I wish women would understand that quota system hurts us in the long run. If we have to bend the rules to include women, it only means they cannot compete on a level ground and don't deserve the position. That men would not respect them because they think they did not do the back breaking work to get to the top. No man can rubbish an Omotola or Ngozi Okonjo or Late Dora or Genevieve or Ibukun Awosika because they paid their dues.

6. I wish women would understand that men and other women would only respect them as much as they respect themselves. That self-respect and self-esteem manifested by dressing, speech, way of wife, decision making would automatically be mirrored in the way they are treated. Nobidy would place a premium on someone not deserving.

7. I wish women would understand they must something to deliver inside of them before expecting the support of others. Nobody would support a vision that does exist, they don't understand or the visioner cannot communicate.

Happy International Women's Day.

Now you Bukatyne I can call a feminist.

Your words here are the embodiment of true equality, one with no special considerations for any gender.

Hmmmm...I simply wish there would be no gender fights where we women are made to feel or feel by choice like the slighted parties in our professions.

Indeed instead of that special recognition for being female each time we reach a milestone, we should be simply recognised as a professional who has achieved regardless of gender. No special treatment for a beautiful curvy female soldier biko ( she doesn't even need the curves to do her job!), none for a pretty female pilot ( she just wanna fly the darn plane!), please no special tag "women in HR" (this profession has had people in it for forever!)...let's just continue to aim to achieve without any special umbrella placed on our heads.

And oh boy, do we relish it, absolutely! We sometimes see it as an advantage of sort and just completely leave our professional competence by the side and capitalize on our gender prowess... Yet we scream equality!

Yes, we understand that we are a minority representation given that it was only within the last century that the world started seeing women beyond the hips, let's just move past that and continue to walk our ways to wherever we want as professionals not women - the minority. Surely, the glass roofs will keep rolling off if we head boot them.

Bukatyne, you are one of the few reasonable ladies on this forum and just too objective for my liking. cool

I don't know if you are really that way or pretending to be, but since I don't plan of accessing you beyond Nland, I'll focus on your e-persona and conclude that you are an awesome woman. smiley

Interesting.

I very well agree that we need to get to the stage where we say

'Mrs. XYZ, an HR manager' than 'Mrs. XYZ, the first female HR manager'.

The second way is victim hood mentality.

I agree with you..40%.

Awareness creation is very important.
Humans have been on earth for thousands of years, but the most progress for women was made in the 20th century. Awareness campaigns drove the changes in policies and laws that you and I benefit from today.

Right to vote
right to education
Child marriage abolishing
abolishing of circumcision
abolishing of breast ironing

etc
these rights that we have today were fought for , and the battle still continues, the fight has not ceased.

Heck, in some societies like saudi, women just won the right to drive.. in 2019!!!.Education levels of our northern nigerian girls are still so low..

This is true feminism, not husband and wife power struggles.

You guys didn't fight for any of these rights here. It had been there all along

It hasn't always been there.

For example, Right to vote for women was recently allowed sometime in the 20th century and it was because some women and a few men fought for it.

Truth is, feminism isn't a bad thing. She just wants women to participate more in things men do, not necessarily fight them for it, or be handed it on a gold platter because they're women. Imagine it as your younger sister wanting to play FIFA15 with you and your other brothers.

Not true. Nigerian women have the right to vote right from inception

Because by the time they got independence from Britain, women were allowed to vote too.

Oh, you mean Nigerian women don't need feminism. But they do. At least in the core north were women are not being allowed to participate in certain things as their male counterparts.

Point is, we still have a long way to go in achieving our aim, and girls turning to financial burden on men and still claiming feminism isn't painting us in good light

That disclaimer in your signature about mentions has been there going on 2years now.

This delayed response is great improvement.

It is easier to ignore daft comments when I decide to respond days/months after.

Sometimes, I am and I don't visit for days/weeks.

Some others, events overtake the discussion and I am late.

Some others, I read the comments, see they are daft and move on to avoid getting into a brawl.

Our opinions are shaped by our experiences and expectations. While I might feel an opinion is daft, neither I nor anyone else is qualified to rubbish the base experience and/or expectations.

Especially when I am not the OP.
