The House of Representatives has urged the federal government to direct Multichoice Nigeria – owners of DStv and GOtv – and other Direct-to-Home Broadcast Satellite Service providers to implement Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) tariff plans.

This followed a motion moved by Hon. Unyime Udem and adopted by the House at the plenary on Tuesday. The House also mandated its Committee on Information and Technology, and Telecommunications to investigate the non-implementation of PAYG tariff plans by the Service Providers with a view to ensuring strict compliance with the tariff plan.

Debating the motion, Udem alleged that the service providers had deliberately refused to implement the Pay-As-You-Go tariff plan but rather charge users on a fixed monthly tariff plan, unlike what is obtainable outside Nigeria.

He said that, DSTV, as one of the Direct-To-Home Service Providers in Nigeria was launched in 1993 and has about 11.9 million subscribers, which is the largest market for its operation.

He said that DSTV operate a Pay-As-You-Go tariff plan in other countries but has chosen to exploit Nigerians through a fixed monthly tariff plan. “Nigeria constitutes 40 percent of DSTV’s global market share; yet over 40 percent of the citizens do not use a greater part of their paid monthly tariff due to engagements that take them from one location to the other on a daily basis.

Hence, they cannot access the services upon expiration whether or not they used their previous subscriptions until they renew it for another month.

He also added that the continuous exploitation by Multichoice constitutes economic sabotage against Nigerians as most of them pay for services they do not consume.

He noted that the company, judging from their average monthly tarrifs, makes billions of Naira monthly at the expense of the subscribers.

At the end of the debate, Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, constituted a committee to investigate the Broadcast Satellite Service Providers, and asked it to report back in four weeks for further investigation.

Who's the fed govt? Are the reps not part of fg? They're the highest beneficiaries of multi choice in Nigeria. They should do the needful cos the fraud has been here from time immemorial. They do pay as you view in their home country but has found it so difficult to do the same in Nigeria. Only a responsible govt frowns at mistreatment meted out to its citizens...this consumerism must end.

Nice one from rep Idems from Akwa Ibom but I take the news with a pinch of salt as this is not the first time this issue has been raised at the highest levels of government but the conspirators keep shooting it down after making noise about it for a while.

If only Nigerians knew the details about the ownership structure and shareholding of multichoice Nigeria and why successive governments have been looking the other way anytime this issue of PAYG is brought up.

For now,it remains a wish and a mere motion!

That is why I stopped subscribing to all our pay TV. I have less than 2hrs daily to watch TV and Phcn will still hold the light, you will have to power gen.... and they receive money for 24hr x 30days. This is pure cheating.

Thank God our eyes are opened and next is phch to give everybody meters

Very apt and well thought by the NASS.

Imagine subscribing a monthly Compact Plus, and after 4 days, you inevitably leave home to spend over a month elsewhere. On expiry of subscription, the useless customer care wont just let you be, calling you every now and then to subscribe again. angry

Una papa.

Pay as you go make sense joor. As per airtime. Charge as per use, not as per time of subscription.

Tell your useless leaders to fix electricity first before saying anyone should implement pay as u go ...without stable electricity telling cable TV provider to do pay as you go is telling them to close business. You can't force a revenue model on any business , let the FG use NTA startimes to start the pay as you go model let see how far they can go

Because telcos provide 2 generators per cell site and Phones now have longer battery spans , most television sets depend on power from the mains to work and since your failed leaders have refused to improve electricity most times most TV sets are off because of lack of power

This same issue was brought up in the last assembly and the one before it.
After all the "gra gra" money exchanged hands, and like every other thing in Nigeria we didn't hear a word of it again.

Now these guys too want to do their own eye service so that they will get their own "egunje".

This is not a country. sad

They have been debating this issue of pay-as-you-go for the past 2 years, yet they haven't done anything about it because majority of house members won't implement it. DStv are seriously working behind the scene because they know our leaders are fantastically corrupt.
