A lot of our young clients who are fresh in the job market, always talk to us about assessing global opportunities – the best way to do it and the guide they need to follow. We understand that gaining access to global work opportunities is one of the challenges of human capital development, in fact, it is referred to as brain drain. However, until certain countries get it right, their young people will continue to work for businesses in other countries.

We have consulted on this same matter since 2018 and we decided to write this article on it using the blueprint provided by one of our facilitators who happens to work in a global startup. He advised that anyone who is seeking global work opportunities should adopt the following blueprint;

Start on time – It is always best to start building your personal brand from school. It goes beyond just assuming offices in your local student union government. This is about global opportunities, so, start applying for internships in global organizations like KPMG, Nestle and the rest. Use opportunities for Africans for your search.

You can do this during the holidays. If you do not get accepted, that is fine, you can, alternatively, look out for remote work opportunities on global websites like flexjobs or remote.io

Once you are able to build your experience using these little internships and holiday jobs, you will have enough experience to back up your applications to more work opportunities, once you are ready for the job market.

The mistake a lot of people make is assuming, they only need jobs after university. This is not true. For those who may not be able to land foreign internships, you can also look for internships within your country while in school.

Ask your parents of relatives for referrals to organizations where they have contacts. Keep your eyes and ears open on the job, learn a lot and be excellent. This work experience will create a good springboard for you to get global work opportunities.

Use LinkedIn – It is our recommendation that as soon as you clock 18 years of age, you should register on LinkedIn – It is free and can grant you access to millions of global leaders and organizations. Do not relent in pursuing your future work goals using this great platform.

You will learn a lot you will connect with different kinds of work professionals and gain insight into how the corporate world truly works. You will also have access to millions of recruiters and job openings.

As long as you are capable, consistent and have a strong work ethic, there is no way you will not get global work opportunities – sometimes remote, and other times, you may need to relocate.

Attend Events – You already know the areas and industries you will love to work in. Of course, you do! Go to Eventbrite.com and check the list of corporate events in your local area that are tailored to your area of specialization and attend.

Many of the events require fees but a lot is also free if you do not have the funds. Attend those events and learn as much as you can about your industry. Again, you do not need to wait till you are out of school for this. You can start now and maximize your global work opportunities.

Meet People and Network Properly – Once you start attending these work events, you will meet a lot of people. Introduce yourself and ensure you connect with people, exchange contacts and stay in touch. You never know who might connect you to your next work opportunity.

The truth is, these days, more work opportunities are given based on referrals. Who knows and trusts you enough to recommend you for a job? Bear in mind that when you meet someone, do not start harassing them to get you a job, rather, do stuff for them, lighten their load and they will never forget you.

Get out there and meet relevant people in your industry, show them you are trustworthy and smart and they just might recommend you for local or global work opportunities.
