When I worked as poultry attendant I was in charge of #brooding day old chicks ensuring we have healthy and weighty cockerels and pullets for sale to retailers within 4 -6 weeks.

As those of us who are breeders may know, heat is a very crucial factor in brooding generally.
We used either live coals or electric bulbs as sources of heat during the brooding . However, both systems of heating had their shortfalls.

When it gets cold at night and early in the morning, the chicks gather round pots of hot coals so close that a number of them get burnt to death.
We also strive to ensure the coals were of good quality so that they don't get smoky and suffocate the birds. Otherwise, we will be recording a high daily mortality rate.

Electric bulbs are effective for heating as we have no fear of smoke but then we couldn't rely on grid power because an hour of outage in the middle of the night could lead to stampede and we’ll be left recording a high mortality rate at dawn.
