Poverty (and ignorance) is the fuel that drives religion. Rich people don't depend on God to solve their problems.
Nigeria before IBB pauperised the populace with SAP was not so religious. Yes, people went to churches and mosques to perform their religious obligations, but fundamentalism was not common. The muslims then got along with Christians and the Christians were not obsessed with converting the muslims. From the middle 80's both Christian and islamic fundamentalism started to rise, until it got to the dangerous levels of today.

Same thing in the US, as poverty began to rise, as the rural economy has been destroyed by globalisation, illiteracy and Christian fundamentalism is on the rise. If the trend continues, the US might become a Christian fundamentalist country within 10 years.

See person calling someone daft, you talk like a semi illiterate. Most atheists identify with religion their are born into, as they become atheists in their adulthood or late teens. They have religious names, celebrate religious festivals and even occasionally attend family churches, mosques and temples with their parents. They are identified as atheists because they don't believe anymore in a personal God that created the universe in 6 days, that watches over all their actions including who they sleep with who and possesses all the negative human emotions like anger, jealousy, hate, love, ego, etc.
