I honestly didn't understand this either.
As long as Telco infrastructure and banks online services are working (for recharge and the like), we are all stuck at home with our phones. This should even drive more traffic to this site undecided

This is stupid. I hope it doesn't affect Nairaland. The #ShutDownNigeria people don't have a very deep understanding of how an economy works. The vast majority of business activities in a developing country like Nigeria are essential. Very few people going to Lagos just for fun. Our leaders think that shutting things down is a viable alternative to massive testing and isolation of those who test positive, and we are cheering them on. There is no quick fix to the Coronavirus. There is no alternative to massive testing, isolation and contact tracing. We have to use our brains.

To be shutting down a country to stop a virus is like shooting a man dead to kill the sickness in his body. Does it work? Yes. But it's also stupid. I say instead of that, find a drug that targets the sickness in his body and kills it without killing the man. That's the only real solution to this issue.

There are only two countries whose efforts to beat the Coronavirus have been really successful. China and South Korea. I suggest that they are the only people that we should be listening to. They both encourage the widespread use of facemasks. They both do massive testing and isolation of infected people. China shut down part of their country but South Korea didn't do that despite having around 1,000 new cases per day at peak. They just continued to do every smart thing that could reduce the rate of transmission of the virus, and it worked and is working.

If you put a mask on every face, educate everybody about how to conduct their business without spreading the virus, and do massive testing of all people suspected to have the virus, and that doesn't work (it will), that's when you can start thinking of shutting things down. Our politicians won't even distribute face-masks to market women in Lagos who are begging them for it, or wear them, but they want to #ShutDownNigeria.

Our politicians knows about the two methods you've suggested here on how to deal with this virus. The #Shutdown and the sharing of mask and massive testing people and isolation. But they being our politicians chose the cheapest that will not cost them a dime even after getting money to buy and provide mask for her citizens. They chose #Shutdown so that they will have more than enough money to embezzle.

I can see some selfish comments here from different monikers including the founder. When other states were shutting down their borders, you didn't condemned it but now that you are affected you all suddenly remember proactive and reactive approach by the government of China, South Korea etc SMH

You have said it all.

I know of a company in Lagos that laid off all its direct sales agents, about 42 of them, last week The excuse they gave was that they are going digital and won't need such employees. Why wait till this moment? Isn't that the highest level of insensitivity? The simple answer to this is, they simply want to stay afloat by cutting cost.

I've said it over and over again to people around me that care to listen that this shutdown may not be good for us. Trump refused to shutdown the United States, even though some of the governors had used their constitutional powers to restrict movement in their states. He has said it repeatedly, whether possible or not, that he plans to reopen the country by mid-April. Just last week, about 3.3 million Americans filed initial unemployment claims in the US, which is the biggest in the country's history. What the country is doing is to significantly increase testing, which they were initially nonchalant about when the virus was on rampage in China, with New York spearheading that aggressively, that is why we see such large numbers everyday. Just last week, the Brazilian government started an online video campaign, albeit in proxy, that the country can't shutdown. The video shows possible devastating effects of a lockdown on the country's economy and its people. Jide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos has also refused to shutdown the state because he knows the effect of such action.

Countries have raised billions and trillions of dollars to help citizens directly to cushion the effects, ours are talking about rice and beans, some of them are not even saying anything other than to shutdown. Even if we are to shutdown, where are the legislators to push for stimulus bills that will help the common man?

Just as you opined, we need lots of testing centres. As at now, we don't have problem with test results because they are known within hours. All we have to do is create massive testing centres. We have facilities rotten away. The Teslim Balogun stadium alone can accommodate well over 2000 people at once. We can introduce drive through testing like the Koreans and the Americans. We can set up such spots in Borny Camp, Falomo bridge, Ikoyi bridge and Lekki toll gate. Other good spots are second Niger bridge, Abuja-Kaduna expressway and so on. This will help to identity carriers and help us isolate them as soon as possible.

In a country like ours, where the large chunk of employers are small businesses, the effects of a complete lockdown will be devastating, and the people cheering them will bear the brute force of its effects.

You have very valid points. Buy then you cant liken the people of Nigeria to those of South Korea and China. There are so many people who are not enlightened about the virus and refuse to believe in its existence. We are more like India, a very stubborn set of people who need brute force most times to even listen to things that'll save lives.
The government cannot provide face masks or even sanitizers for anyone. A pack of face mask is already 15k, how many people can afford that?

You are saying this because you have no idea of how Italy became the headquarters of this pandemic. Take your time to go read how things travelled round the country .

And for the economy , go ask italy now if they care about the economy or about people's life now . The three Economic agent are government, firm and house hold . All of this are human . You need save their lives first before thinking about the economy .

....and finally , I and you know that almost nothing is working in this country but, this is not the time to talk about it , since we do not have enough testing kits , we should try the very next alternative to make sure in reducing the spread .
You are talking about Italy, I don't say you don't have a point but what about South Korea and China that he mentioned? Advocating that we adopt their measure is good idea. After all, they are able to contain and control the virus without this kind of lockdown.

Blackman's case is very complicated. We have all the natural resource needed to do more than what south Korea or China/Wuhan is doing but our structure as a country isn't that of nation trying to move forward but as one with many group trying to dominate one another. These nations have good research and technological drive and have put them to good use in the event of Coronavirus. We actually don't have those. For example our manufacturing sector or industrial sector actually doesn't exist because virtually all the brains driving it are foreign brains. If we had industrial and technological expertise, we could have attempted to mass produce masks and testing kits but what we have as industries are largely packaging plants that import largely finished goods and package them in Lagos/Ogun state axis.

For the first and second bolded, the move is more like limiting movements and not closing, it was stated in the contents of the post that transportation of essential commodities is still encouraged.

For the third bolded, it actually works. Check out this simulation to understand how it works properly.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxAaO2rsdIs But, it's worth noting that it actually only has any meaningful effect if the infection hasn't spread seriously in Ogun as well.

And the last bolded, nothing works better than quick testing and isolation, but our leaders would rather purchase 2020 camry than test kits. We're in a serious condition here.

Exactly. We are always looking for the easy way out. We aren't testing enough and isolating but we want to use the fire brigade approach of lock down. Many stories of people with the symptoms not getting aid or getting tested but dumbo wants to close highways.

What is the use of a lockdown if people inside the state are still partying like no tomorrow, most businesses still open and markets are running wild. At least fix that first and do contact tracing and isolate high risk people first.

They just want to appear to be working.
