Might have been a mean feat then, but it was no way a Mercedes.

I think their late response in switching to the injector engine and auto trans was there undoing thereby giving the Japanese cars an edge.

I don't think so. The Mercedes has always been a high status car and mid 70s was no exception. The move to Peugeot, seen as a middle class car, was actually a directive from OBJ

In fact it was the profligacy that characterized much the Gowon years where public officials were using exotic high end cars (like the benz) that made OBJ make the directive.

Please don't say that. The government then was really trying to encourage certain Nigerian assembled products from the Kaduna Peugeot plant and Lagos Volkswagen plant: The 504/505 for top officials and the VW Igala for lower/middle cadre.

The private sector and rich folks around then had the the main choice of the Toyota Crown and the ubiquitous Mercedes 280S which in its time was equivalent to your mentioned S500 series.
