Oga are you even reading what they wrote... They said they want to buy an innocent cargo plane and ask Denel of SA to convert into a bad ass fighting machine and you are talking of AC130 are you not the same person that said we can't buy armed platforms from the west. The C130 can be sold to Nigeria by even countries within the North Allied treaty and can be retrofitted for combat roles here in Africa or the UAE.
You can't put any weapon on a C130 without getting a hard stare and barking from the US.

Jln115, Denel had one gunship project before, care to post for educational purposes.

Memo to the house: There's no C130 gunship or equivalent coming to Nigeria, enough fantasies

Bullsh1t per usual. TChad Didn't really do anything all that special. They raided a some rusty boko shacks, shot up a forest lost over 50 men and claimed they killed over 1,000 Bokos but can't display a single corpse. Some of you guys really are gullible buffoons. The Nigerian army raids boko bases yearly you just rarely hear about it becuase bad news especially regarding Nigeria(Free Africa in general) is far more sensational than good news. Chad is a malnourished poverty stricken french puppet state trapped in the desert nothing more sorry.

Came across this paper by Andrew Glendinning. A long-ish read but well worth it.

A South African Heavy Gunship?

Saab’s JAS 39 Gripen, which in both the C and D variants, is the South African Air Force’s (SAAF) premier multirole jet fighter aircraft. But considering a hypothetical weaponised form of long-range, low-cost gunship is an interesting thought experiment away from the realm of hi-tech fighter jets. A heavy gunship is essentially a well-armed ground-attack aircraft. The only real example of such a concept is the United States Air Force, where weaponised variants of civilian aircraft fill valuable, niche roles. The gunship’s primary missions are close air support, air interdiction and armed reconnaissance. Other missions include perimeter and point defence; escort, landing, drop and extraction zone support; forward air control, limited command and control, and combat search and rescue. These heavily armed aircraft incorporate side-firing cannons integrated with sophisticated sensor, navigation and fire control systems to provide surgical firepower or area saturation fire during extended periods, at night and in adverse weather.

The gunship was proven during the Vietnam War, where Gen John Ryan, USAF Chief of Staff, noted that side-firing gunships are “one of the most successful developments arising from our experience in Southeast Asia.” Colonel Ron Terry, a former fighter pilot who led the charge in the early 1960s to develop the AC-47 and its successors, points out today that the gunships have been one of the most “effective things the United States has had for engagements in Panama, Grenada, and Afghanistan.”

The reason this particular concept is worth keeping in mind is that it is well within reach for the South African Air Force to create a local version of a heavy gunship. Denel for instance currently produces a low recoil 105 mm howitzer (known as the Light Experimental Ordinance [LEO]), a 30 mm cannon and a rapid fire 25 mm cannon. All of these weapons platforms could easily be integrated into a civilian aircraft of similar size as an AC47. As for fire control systems, there are a number of defence companies in South Africa which would almost certainly be able to provide the system with an integrated fire control unit, target acquisition capabilities as well as the necessary surveillance equipment needed for hypothetical mission use in the African battle-space. There are aircraft, which in the long-term, may be more than capable of assuming the role of a heavy gunship. One aircraft in particular, which came to light when the South African government cancelled its participation in the Airbus A400M programme, is the KC-390 aircraft under development by the Brazilian aerospace manufacturer Embraer.
This platform would be ideal, in that it is a large, modern jet powered transport aircraft, capable of lifting an estimated 21 tonnes. South Africa would also be likely to acquire KC-390’s from Brazil for the express purpose of converting them into heavy gunships, as South Africa and Brazil have enjoyed a highly fruitful relationship while jointly developing the 5th generation A-Darter air-to air missile. Therefore, it begs the question, assuming the conversion is indeed possible, what exactly would the SAAF be able to do with such a system, and what would be the benefits of possessing such significant airborne firepower? The answer is quite simple. The SAAF would be able to use a single type of aircraft to plug existing holes in its operational capabilities. For instance, with a similar electronic surveillance suit to a USAF equivalent, this includes advanced avionics, radar, high-resolution imaging systems, Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) capabilities and magnetic anomaly detector (MAD). The MAD is a highly sensitive passive device with a phased-array antenna which could pick up localised deviations in earth’s magnetic field which is used to detect submerged submarines.

If all of these capabilities are included on the weaponised version of the KC 390, it could be used to fulfil the maritime recognisance gap which is a significant requirement for the SAAF at present. It could also be used in a variety of border patrol missions and to provide precise tactical firepower where ever needed, particularly to SANDF personnel deployed on peace keeping operations in Africa. It is this factor, the ability to provide long range heavy fire support to deployed infantry and mobile units, that has served the USAF so well over the years and would as such, be a useful future capability for the aircraft to undertake with the SAAF. It is the inherent flexibility of the system, from providing close air support to infantry, while also being able to hunt submarines, act as a long range airborne tank killer, and complete a variety of surveillance missions that makes this type of aircraft so attractive. It can also be used under certain circumstances as a platform for paratroopers and as a transport aircraft; however this may only be a limited possibility in emergency situations.

In addition the heavy gunship configuration of a KC-390 acting as a combat support aircraft may well outperform most of the SAAF’s existing platforms, including the Gripen, the Hawk or the Rooivalk. This is due to the fact that each of these three systems faces some severe limitations, in terms of operational range, the size of each aircraft’s armaments payload, and in the case of the Rooivalk, both speed and its operational ceiling. Take for instance the SAAF Gripen, the SAAF’s premier combat aircraft. Each aircraft has an effective range of around 800km, and with current budgetary and technical constraints, can only accommodate an ordinance payload of a few unguided bombs and the laser guided Paveway II bomb, a few hundred 27mm cannon shells, and Denel’s air-to-air missile, the A-Darter. From a brass-tacks perspective, the use of a weaponised KC 390 will yield benefits in munitions expenditure. For instance the SAAF Gripen carries the Paveway II laser guided bomb. Each Paveway II, weighs in at around 227 kg, and costs somewhere in the region of US$ 19,000. Whereas even the largest calibre ammunition the AC-130 carries, the 15.1 kg 105 mm shell, in its High Explosive configuration costs somewhere in the region of US$ 160. Therefore, each Paveway II buys the SAAF, 102 high explosive 105mm shells.

This is not to suggest that the weaponised KC-390 would replace the Gripens. However what it would do is to add a significant set of capabilities to the SAAF, which when used in combination with the Gripens and the Rooivalks would create a formidable airborne force. Of course it must be said that this is an interesting concept, and could, with a little foresight and the right sort of budgetary expansion provide the SAAF with a whole host of new capabilities. However it must be recognised that the viability of such a system would likely only be a reality in the next 20 years or so. In the meantime, there are far more pressing needs, and budgetary constraints that simply would not allow for the development of an entirely new combat platform, at this point. The concept of a heavy gunship for the SAAF has a variety of benefits, and obvious advantages over a variety of competing aircraft. It could also serve as a potentially significant export earner for the South African defence industry. However, it will likely remain an interesting concept to be considered by military planners, but ultimately unlikely to see the light of day until the SAAF sees a significant increase in its budget. ENDS

And now for my little contribution: Apart from the 105mm howitzer, 30mm & 25mm cannons, in the pics are some of the existing SA weapons systems we could include for a truly modular system.

N.B. Yes, yes I know about the jet engine...

COMBATING COVID-19: NAF AIRLIFTS MORE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT, PROVIDES OTHER SUPPORT AS IT SUSTAINS MEASURES TO CURB SPREAD OF THE VIRUS

As part of its continued support towards combating the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), today, 10 April 2020, airlifted medical equipment and supplies donated by the Turkish Government to Nigeria from the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos to the Nnmadi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja. The donated medical items, which consist of several boxes of equipment, medications and other supplies, weighing about 4,000 Kg, were airlifted by a NAF C-130 Hercules aircraft (NAF 917) and handed over by the NAF Aircrew to a representative of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 for delivery to the Central Storage Facility in Abuja.

It may be recalled that the NAF, in furtherance of its constitutional role of providing Military Aid to Civil Authority (MACA), had earlier detailed an aircraft to airlift a team of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) health officials from Brazzaville in the Republic of Congo, where they had travelled to undergo a World Health Organization training programme on the management of COVID-19, but became stranded due to closure of air and land borders by the Government of Congo Brazzaville. Furthermore, the NAF airlifted some healthcare professionals from the Irua Specialist Teaching Hospital in Edo State to Abuja and continues to avail its aircraft for the airlifting of relief materials as well as officials of the Federal and State Ministries of Health and NCDC to enable them sustain their vital functions. It may also be recalled that the NAF had, on 24 March 2020, airlifted medical materials consisting of 107 boxes of medical supplies and equipment donated by the Jack Ma Foundation. Moreover, the NAF, through its Liquid Oxygen Plant at the 103 Strike Group, Yola, is also producing oxygen for distribution to Isolation Centres and designated Hospitals across the Country in support of the national response to the COVID-19 emergency.

As regards the safety of its personnel and their families, the NAF has taken elaborate steps to deal with the COVID-19 threat. Since the first confirmed case in Nigeria in February 2020, the Medical Branch of the Service has undertaken a comprehensive sensitization campaign across all NAF units while emplacing necessary measures to prevent outbreak amongst personnel and their dependants. The sensitization campaign included awareness lectures on precautionary measures as well as the distribution of over 30,000 information, education and communication materials on the disease to NAF units. In addition, some NAF medical doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers have been mobilized as part of the 80 selected Armed Forces of Nigeria medical personnel deployed to support the Federal Government’s effort to deal with COVID-19 in Nigeria.

In addition to the sensitization and training, the NAF has emplaced series of preventive measures to ensure that personnel are adequately protected whilst performing their constitutional role of defending the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Nation. These measures include the disinfection of facilities as well as the production and distribution of large quantities of hand sanitizers by NAF medical units to personnel and their dependants, especially NAF troops on the frontlines. The Service has also installed hand washing facilities in all NAF units including Headquarters NAF Abuja, while all visitors and passengers boarding NAF aircraft are properly screened and the aircraft disinfected after every flight. Moreover, in order to ensure that NAF medical and emergency personnel get adequate protection against COVID-19, the NAF Investment Limited (NAFIL) Tailoring Workshop contacted relevant Government Agencies for the licensing of locally produced personal protective equipment (PPE) for use in NAF Hospitals. Besides, the Air Force Research and Development Centre (AFRDC) has been tasked to develop a ventilator locally to be used after certification by relevant Government Agencies

While commenting on the steps taken by the Service so far, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, stated that the NAF, along with sister Services and other security agencies, would continue to mobilize its human and material resources and make available its assets to ensure that COVID-19 is defeated. He therefore enjoined all NAF personnel to maintain prescribed personal hygiene and social distancing precautionary measures, whilst eschewing fake news and complying with all directives issued by Defence Headquaerters, including staying at home, where applicable. He noted that by banding together and complying with these precautions, the Nation would collectively overcome the challenge posed by COVID-19.

Lol. In my opinion the F-22 Raptor is the best plane ever built bar none. No other jet even comes close to it. This is all the more remarkable considering it is not even new and was released decades ago.
The JSF on the other hand... If you read my earlier write up, I said the JSF is "supposedly" better. I don't agree with that assessment at all, but who am I to question the wisdom of the Pentagon.
As for gunships, we don't need very elaborate ones. It merely needs to have FLIR so it can work at night, a kind of Firefinder radar for detecting gunshots and long range for loitering over the battlefield. It would be best to use it at night since the terrorists won't be able to see it then. It should have some armor too and must be heavily armed with bombs and cannons.

Exactly what I've been trying to explain since morning. We don't need the ac130. It doesnt have to be the ac130. There's several aircraft manufacturers around the world who can build us cargo planes and we contract the outfitting to the south Africans like someone else mentioned.

America, a weak enemy? Lol.

From what I can see the Taliban are not and have never been serious about negotiations. I remember reading an intelligence briefing to that effect, but then anyone could easily see that.

So, why are the Taliban negotiating? Mainly to bamboozle, and to show their power.

Remember the almighty US has endlessly said it would never ever negotiate with terrorists. Then imagine them going cap in hand to negotiate with some sandal-wearing towelheads who can't count up to 100 but can reassemble an AK 47 blindfolded.

So, the negotiations are a great propaganda coup for the Taliban. They will cheerfully negotiate an end to American occupation and agree to share power with the Afghan government. Once the Americans are gone they will reopen their offensive and make Afghanistan theirs once again.
They agreed to negotiate because they have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

How about speaking from the list of their demands.

It's not him that called it a failure. Everyone knows it's a failure. Even Trump the great idiot based his campaign on bringing the troops home and ending America's misadventures in the middle east.

0.3% KIA sounds really nice. Except if your brother or sister was included in that kill statistic.

Consider, the war in Afghanistan has damaged the US almost beyond the point of recovery. It has spent trillions of dollars prosecuting this war and has precious little to show for it. Its civil infrastructure is in shambles because there's no money to fix these, since war consumes money like crazy.

What the above statistics don't show is that quite a few service men and women stuffer from PTSD. They act crazy and do the craziest things and the cost of treating them is astronomical.

The war in Afghanistan has also massively degraded the US war fighting abilities. While it was focusing on fighting towelheads, the Chinese were massively growing their army and navy and the Russians were getting bolder and acting out.

Reports of massacres and torture by US forces also does its reputation no good and makes it look hypocritical when it lectures other countries on human rights.

The US war on terror is a failure with no clear goal or objective. The only thing it has to show for it is millions of deaths and unimaginable devastation. The Taliban they invaded Afghanistan to remove will be back in charge of that country very soon.

If 0.3% KIA in 19yrs is a failure by your standards, can you share with us your success statistics standard of any 19yrs conflict since the history of mankind.

Yes, it's a failure. Just like the Israelis, the US has an unhealthy fear of casualties. Just one dead soldier in the Middle East or anywhere else can trigger congressional hearings, firings and worse.

It doesn't matter if 1 person or 3K dies, they view every death as excessive and will spend millions of dollars in armaments attacking folks with AK who are about to overrun a single one of their soldiers. Someone like you should have known that.

And I'm not using my standards, but theirs.

Of course you are not the leader. I personally will be ashamed of my self if I am being led by an immature and easily provoked sets of inneptitudes whose only excuse for failure is that "at least we are getting something" you are not and will never be the giant of Africa as far as military force is concerned if you continue this way. Giant of Africa. You think its just Planes that you do not have? Nigeria lacks any form of force projecting system as it is right now we are incapable of launching a modest assault anywhere outside our territory for self defense or for self sustenance. Even Mali can give us a rough day at the battle field and this person thinks calling me names is the solution to his problem. You lack Air defense systems, you lack a mechanised army, you lack a blue water navy, you lack the ability to launch a sustained assault even within your territory and you are here insulting me.

The General complaining the other time was still within Nigeria fighting a local insurgency and we already have issues, what of when we are faced with a worthy mechanised brigade sized battle hardened conventional force.

I remember the Military enthusiasts that I know, they used to be people that sit down and talk about the operational needs of the Nigerian fighting force. But the wayward people we see this days are people that are trying to sugar coat failure and white wash incompetence.

How can a general be complaining that he is overwhelmed by gun trucks when countries around us are fielding very impressive fully mechanized armoured brigade sized forces. How do we stand them if we can't stand Boko Haram Hilux gun trucks.

You think calling me name is the stake here?
