Neil Alden Armstrong (August 5, 1930 – August 25, 2012) was an American astronaut and aeronautical engineer and the first person to walk on the Moon. He was also a naval aviator, test pilot, and university professor. He became a midshipman in 1949 and a naval aviator the following year. He saw action in the Korean War, flying the Grumman F9F Panther from the aircraft carrier USS Essex. In September 1951, while making a low bombing run, Armstrong's aircraft was damaged when it collided with an anti-aircraft cable which cut off a large portion of one wing. Armstrong was forced to bail out. After the war, he completed his bachelor's degree at Purdue and became a test pilot at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) High-Speed Flight Station at Edwards Air Force Base in California. He was the project pilot on Century Series fighters and flew the North American X-15 seven times. He was also a participant in the U.S. Air Force's Man in Space Soonest and X-20 Dyna-Soar human spaceflight programs. Armstrong joined the NASA Astronaut Corps in the second group, which was selected in 1962. He made his first spaceflight as command pilot of Gemini 8 in March 1966, becoming NASA's first civilian astronaut to fly in space. During this mission with pilot David Scott, he performed the first docking of two spacecraft; the mission was aborted after Armstrong used some of his re-entry control fuel to stabilize a dangerous roll caused by a stuck thruster. During training for Armstrong's second and last spaceflight as commander of Apollo 11, he had to eject from the Lunar Landing Research Vehicle moments before a crash. On July 20, 1969, Armstrong and Apollo 11 Lunar Module (LM) pilot Buzz Aldrin became the first people to land on the Moon, and the next day they spent two and a half hours outside the spacecraft while Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit in the mission's command module (CM). When Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface, he famously said: "That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind." Along with Collins and Aldrin, Armstrong was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Richard Nixon. President Jimmy Carter presented Armstrong with the Congressional Space Medal of Honor in 1978, and Armstrong and his former crewmates received a Congressional Gold Medal in 2009. After he resigned from NASA in 1971, Armstrong taught in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Cincinnati until 1979. He served on the Apollo 13 accident investigation and on the Rogers Commission, which investigated the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. He acted as a spokesman for several businesses and appeared in advertising for the automotive brand Chrysler starting in January 1979. |

Worden died in his sleep at a rehab center in Houston following treatment for an infection, said friend and colleague Tom Kallman. Seven NASA astronauts died who were or would have been part of the Apollo program: Theodore Freeman -- killed during an ejection from his T-38 jet trainer after a bird strike (1964).

Everflourish:The point in that Dan. 1:4 is about their being discerning and quick to understand, and not about science as we know it. When someone is already a scientist, there was no need to tutor such ones on Babylonian literature, since he would have known it already. meanwhile, in the NKJV, that phrase was changed. it says: Dan 1:4 young men in whom there was no blemish, but good-looking, gifted in all wisdom, possessing knowledge and quick to understand, who had ability to serve in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the language and literature of the Chaldeans. NKJV I didnt say that God is not a scientist, I said that Daniel is not a scientist. He is not known as one who studies nature. He is devoted in the worshp of God. Not researching about nature like some greeks. The incident here is far from the context of Chapter 12. That is my point. Daniel 12:4:God had just given Daniel a prophesy of the future. He then told him to seal it. That in the end the knowledge of this prophesy will be uncovered and abundant. God was not talking about scientific knowledge. That was never the context. God was not discussing science in His prophesy. Lets see what this commentary has to say about that. Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased - not referring to the modern rapidity of locomotion, as some think, nor to Christian missionaries going about to preach the Gospel to the world at large (Barnes), which the context scarcely admits; but, whereas now but few care for this prophecy of God by thee, Daniel, "at the time of the end" - i.e., near its fulfillment - "many shall run to and fro;" i.e., scrutinize it, running through every page. Compare Hab 2:2, my note; Amos 8:12, "They shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord" (Calvin); or, "run to and fro," announcing to all who come in their way the explanation of the prophecy which shall then be unsealed: it is thereby that 'the knowledge shall be increased.' "Running" is the characteristic mark of one who professes to have a divine communication to announce (Jer 23:21, "I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran" . This is probably being now fulfilled. God's prescience and His providence are becoming better known by the diligent investigation of the prophecies, of Daniel. It, is not knowledge in general, but 'the knowledge of prophecy which the Hebrew and the context show to be what is meant here. (from Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown Commentary,) |
