Coronavirus: Don’t Extend Lockdown, NLC Tells FG by seunlayi(op): 9:09am On Apr 23, 2020
The Nigeria Labour Congress has called on the Federal Government not to extend the lockdown order on COVID-19, warning that doing so might cause social unrest in the affected states and the Federal Capital Territory.

In a letter addressed to the chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 and dater April 14, 2020, which was signed by the NLC president, Ayuba Wabba, the union also frowned at the method employed by the FG in the distribution of the palliative measure, calling for the expansion of the initiative to all Nigerians affected by the pandemic.

The union said, “While we understand the public health imperatives for extending the lockdown in some parts of the country, it is also very important to underscore the fact that the states currently under total lockdown are the economic and administrative nerve centres of Nigeria.

“This is very dicey. As much as it is important to keep many Nigerians from dying in the hands of coronavirus, loss of income and the accompanying destitution can also be a pathfinder for numerous other sicknesses and deaths. This is the time to play the balancing game.

“The truth is that our economy might relapse into prolonged coma if the current lockdown in the nation’s nerve centres goes beyond the current extension.

“There were widespread acts of civil disobedience, inducement of law enforcement agents to gain passes and even various forms of violent crimes.

“No one is sure how long this dam would hold. We fear that the situation will get out of hand if the lockdown exceeds one month.

“While we commend government for being proactive, we opine that the stimulus package would be best served through consultation with social partners.

“Labour and private sector employers have a good understanding of industries where jobs and production are in most danger.”

Re: Coronavirus: Don’t Extend Lockdown, NLC Tells FG by festacman(m):
1. The danger of COVID-19 becoming widespread still lurking as daily tests reveal more cases especially in Lagos State.

2. However, in the face of insufficient government palliatives , any attempt to extend the presidential lockdown will be ill-advised because people are now merely hanging in there and waiting agonizingly for midnight of Monday 27 April. Hell will be let loose if extension happens.

3. Given the basic nature of our economy, it might be dangerous for businesses to have too long a downtime as government may not be able to give massive stimulus.

It is catch-22 situation but times like these are why people stood in the sun to vote for some people.

stop comparing USA with Naija. Naija may relax it if all including the govt can cooperate. Take it or leave it, things can't return to normal for now. I can see many job loss, many business folding...... Let's just start planning to go back to the farm. The occupation given to us by God. I have started in my little way already, just waiting for the rain to bless the soil

Moreover the virus doesn't spread in hot regions.

the lockdown is not working

government is not sincere & doesn't care for Nigerians at all

lockdown is close to 4weeks, how many people have been tested so far?

in what way has this government assist Nigerians with relieve materials?

Despite lockdown, people still moves from one state to the other

Government can't lock down people further more else unimaginable will happen

Nigerians are suffering with hunger, it's preventable if government is serious but it's unfortunate that this cursed government we have in Nigeria still stole money meant for testing people & treating people for covid 19

Lockdown is not working

You're so inconsiderate. How will common sense cure hunger and armed robbery? Lock down can be partially lifted and enforce the use of ppe's since parliatives aren't coming forth.

If man can survive war with little food, why can't we just do the same now and battle the chain of Covid-19? I hope people won't learn in a harder way.

To those quoting me:
It is now many are fond in the habit of eating heavily while doing less with limited or no income instead of sitting down with family and plan on whatever is available, manage or ration it... This is better than the situation that you will see food and you won't be able to eat it when the foods feel like paper in your mouth. I v bn thru a lot, I know what I m saying.

If not for the lockdown, this virus would have been working freely in our communities by now

Yes... You know her history in Nigeria....
It's up to us individually to discern the truth regardless where the source is from... Not every news from a genuine source are true, while not every news from an ingenuine source are fake...
We trust source at our own discretion

I pray they do not listen. I want it to lead to uprising in Nigeria.
Re: Coronavirus: Don’t Extend Lockdown, NLC Tells FG by samnificent(m): 9:43am On Apr 23, 2020
NLC should've done that before the extension of the lockdow..

I hope the lockdown be extended so that More Nigerians will wake up to how corrupt and non challant our government is, so that by the time this is all over we'll seek a revolution....

I pray for a new Nigeria.

huh My advice to Nigerian Youth is to start thinking out of the box.
If your income were affected in lockdown you need to think
If your job were affected in lockdown you need to think
If your life were affected in lockdown you need to think
If your feeding were affected in lockdown you need to think

You need to unlearn, relearn something...

Stay Safe!
Re: Coronavirus: Don’t Extend Lockdown, NLC Tells FG by Mskrisx(f):
With the lockdown cases are still arising.
If I were in the hem of affairs in the country this would be my suggestions;

1. No interstate movement.
2. Wear facemask or die by fire. (North Korean style)
3. Before you can open your business, you must get tested.
4. Schools cant open for now.
