COVID-19 Palliative: Ondo receives rice and groundnut oil from FG. Single register to be deployed.

State government has received three trailers of rice and a trailer of vegetable oil from the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development as part of measures to cushion the effect of the lock-down brought on as a result of the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria.

The State Governor, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu Aketi SAN, officially received the palliative items at the Government House ground, Alagbaka from the State Operating Coordinating Unit of the State Youth Employment and Social Support Operation, YESSO.

Addressing journalists, Akeredolu said: “We can all see the palliative items. I have confirmed the receipt of 1,800 bags of rice and 700 25litre gallons of groundnut oil to the Minister during our virtual meeting. We are grateful to the Federal Government and we look forward to more, so that we can keep reaching out to our people during this critical period.’

Handing over to the state palliative committee he implored them to ensure the equitable distribution of these items to all Local Government Areas in the state. ’We have covered all the 18 Local Government Areas in the first round of palliative distribution and the second round is going to start very soon. If we still have more palliative to give, we will also do”, he said.

The Governor, however admonished the palliative committee that expired rice should not be shared to the people of the state, noting that he has the assurance of the Minister to replace any item found to be below standard or expired.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Public and Intergovernmental Relations, who doubles as State Focal Person for all Social Interventions in the state, Mrs Olubunmi Ademosu thanked the Governor for ensuring that the poor and vulnerables are adequately catered for by allowing the state to key-in into the programme 2017, which has now put the State on the National Registry with the establishment of the Single Register of Poor and Vulnerable Households.

She assured that, even though, everybody on the Single Register might not be assisted at the same time, but as time goes on, every life would be touched, while noting that the YESSO team would collaborate with the palliative committee to ensure that the targeted beneficiaries receive the item.

Earlier while presenting the items to the Governor, the State Coordinator of YESSO, Bankole Olaoluwa Esq reiterated that the State Operating Coordinating Unit of YESSO has been able to provide the state with Social Register of Poor and Vulnerable households capturing 89,544 household members across the 18 Local Government Areas in the State which will aid the distribution of the palliatives.

He noted that the social registration exercise is ongoing, as not all the communities in the Local Government Areas have been captured adding that “Under this administration, there is a Public Workfare component of YESSO, where we have been paying stipends to over 5,000 youths in the state, and another State Grants for the elderly in the state. Before the outbreak of COVID-19, the State Governor recognized that we have poor and vulnerable people in the state and has been doing his best to assist them through this project”.
