LADI KWALI: THE WOMAN AT THE BACK OF THE ₦20 NOTE (A MUST READ)

Ladi Kwali was a Nigerian potter, born in the village of Kwali in the Gwari region of Northern Nigeria. She was an exceptional and excellent potter who made beautiful potteries.

She lived all her life practicing pottery craft in Kwali village of Northern Nigeria, where she caught the attention of a white man who loved her work and helped her showcase her art around the world.
She was later invited to the United Kingdom, despite her informal education, to teach her art to students as an external lecturer/tutor.

Kwali was awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in 1962 and an honourary doctoral degree from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1977.

In 1980, the Nigerian Government invested on her with the insignia of the Nigerian National Order of Merit Award (NNOM); the highest national honour for academic achievement. She also received the national honour of the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) in 1981.

Ladi Kwali died on August 12, 1984. She was 59. Her picture appears at the back of the ₦20 note.

While some ladies only know how to apply carrrowhite on their body, some are still very much exceptional striving to stand out...

What did Nigerian govt do to retain this knowledge, expand and harness it for economic gains other than honorary award.

I was expecting to hear that an institute of pottery was opened in her name where this knowledge will be taught to as many young people and eventually transform the trade into an enviable and lucrative one.

It took a white man to discover her even in Nigeria... White men always come and discover things for us and utilize it for their gains and give us the chaff...

I pledge to Nigeria my Country....

very educating. my wonder is how a soldier like Muritala Ramat Muhat appears on our currecny. can someone explains what makes him deserve that honor? This is the reason I have decided not to hold #20 note for the past 15 years now. if my change remain twenty naira and it is that note they want to give me, I dash it out straight
