Hi guys, I am at absolute beginner level french. Been using memrise, rocket french and pimsleur to teach myself since I can't attend classes right now and I must say that they have been really helpful as I can understand simple conversations, speak, read and write a little. As of now, I am trying to pay for rocket french subscription but I can't as Nigeria is not listed there, has anyone encountered this? How did you resolve it?

Secondly, I have been eyeing learn french with Alexa's paid course. It is claimed that the course can take one from A0 to C2. Has anyone explored or knows someone who has explored this route?

Please any guidance will be seriously appreciated. Thank you.

I subscibed to Alexa paid course. It takes you through 40 basic lessons from A0 to C2. Each pre recorded video lesson has a pdf version you can download to read later and about 3 to 4 supplementary videos on the main lesson. You get an exercise after the main video. Alexa is good to learn all basic grammars you need to know. The class doesn't prepare you for any french exam. She is planning to start an online class via zoom and skype. Already screening french professors for that. In all, the paid class is worth it. I subscibed for 3 months. You can also check language exchange group out on facebook. There are native french speaker there to improve your speaking with.

Just candid advice and nothing more. It's up to you to take it or leave it. There are two recognized way of learning French to pass TEF: Go to an established physical class that have results in what you're looking for or alternatively go to an online school with the same results. There are two secrets that I was told by my online tutor that passing French requires two things: Knowing French thoroughly and understanding TEF system. You must get the two to pass TEF and obtain the required results. As per online resources, if you are talking about apps, etc I don't think that can take you beyond A2 and then your speaking may suffer.

Thank you for the advice.

I would advise, after the covid 19 episode, that you look for a physical center to learn French, meet with other people and learn. Its a language you can not learn in isolation, you have to be social and free around people who speak the language. leave all those courses that you just read up, you need interaction, this is a language.

Yeah you are right. I was supposed to start classes this April at my local AF before all these covid stuff. However those courses that I have been doing are already helping me on the journey. I can't just sit and fold my arms waiting for all these to pass. Luckily for me too, two of my younger sisters are fluent in french so I interact with them as well.
Perhaps when all these is over, I will be starting AF at a higher level than I would have if it hadn't happened.

Bonsoir Tout le monde,
Good initiative for those who created this forum. I am not really new to French; I did a six month crash program on it about 15 years ago and became quite good in reading and communicating in French but have become very rusty. Can I learn and pass the TEF exam by using online resources alone or it is advisable I attend classes in Alliance Francaise or IEF?
Likewise, for those who may have written the exam, which online resources would you proffer to a learner like me?
I know my Professeur de Francaise then used to advice us to communicate within ourselves so I won't mind having study partners in Lagos who we can learn and build up our French vocabularies together.

Since you have prior knowledge of the language, why not also try the TEF sample exams on You Tube and on Prepmyfuture to gauge where you stand exam prep wise and what areas you need to focus on.

Some You Tube links for CO and CE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIjyVp8XTQ4

In my opinion, interaction with others may only be critical for speaking EO, everything else you can wing it solo until the lockdown is over.

Please is there any tip for homophones, the last 10 questions of CO. Most of the time I hear the same thing embarassed

Try this video. These are some common consonants that sound similar that you should tune your ears to differentiate. E.g. d and t or v and f

Thank you for the advice, I will start refreshing my knowledge online first, then try the sample exams after which I will determine the way forward. I really appreciate your assistance with the links.

It won't be frozen if you update with her WES results. Your score should increase according to what her degree(s) are. I think for accompanying spouse its 8 for Bachelor's, 10 for Master's or something. 461 + 8 should put you at a good score. Hopefully.

Good day Amaya, i think you do understand how these process work, am so sorry to bother you, please i am new here and gathering information on my best chance of traveling to Canada with my spouse with Express entry. Please can you help and how can do I start? I will be very grateful

Your best bet is to read this thread (https://www.nairaland.com/5471101/canadian-express-entry-federal-skilled) from the very first page. Then ask specific questions on that thread when you need it.

1. Practice with Duolingo app
2. Watch France 24 Live on You Tube
3. Download and listen to Radio France International app on phone

Immersing in all these will help reinforce or build your french.

One way is to practice the short and texts. I hear there's a comment se preparer au TEF Facebook group where you can download all of the questions with answers. CE, almost always, has an impressive number of repeated questions.

Also thought to mention that when you read, please don't focus on the words you don't understand, there will always be many of these. Focus instead on the words you do understand and try to get the general gist of what is being said with the vocab that you know and recognise....practice reading daily with this style in mind......read faits divers (this helps you with CE and EE)

All the best

just a little addition. So many advanced expressions are used in CE, so you need up your game in synonyms (nouns, verbs, adjectives), know the tenses very well. And try to gather french way of making expressions from News channel, news paper, radio, dictionary etc.

Peace!!

To be sincere, weekend classes as a beginner to B2 can't be achieved in 9 months as you will need to immerse yourself deeply in the language to be able to achieve that B2.

I really don't know a way out but what I know is that achieving B2 from the scratch requires great effort.
