People are prone to stereotyping, but we love it when someone flips the script.

So when Hilary Brown asked us what the difference is between turtles and tortoises, we were happy to learn that our notions about turtles were all wet.

Turtle or tortoise?

Sheila Madrak, a San Diego-based wildlife biologist who specializes in sea turtles, has a simple answer.

“All of them are turtles,” she says.

The end.

Check the feet. Most turtles have webbed feet. Tortoises have feet like chicken, most turtles like duck.

Simple and correct.

As a result of this lockdown, boredom became too much and I went fishing in a nearby water behind my building here in ago, Lagos State.

Fortunately I caught this little, innocent and shy animal.

It's my new pet
It’s a fresh water tortoise I guess

Tortoises are terrestrial.

Turtles are aquatic

You caught it close to a body of water so it is a turtle...

That isn't enough...

It has a smooth leather-like black shell so it is a turtle... Tortoises have rough mostly multicolored hard shells.

Please!!! Most species of turtles are endangered. You can make a difference by releasing this young animal back into the water. Please support conservation... You can research more about the status of turtles... Thanks

Do you need an article (Research, Proposal, News, Academic, etc) writer? Do send a mail to ero2writes@gmail.com. If you're TB and you need a B, contact as well... Thanks
Tortoise are both terrestial and aquatic..The are only aquatic when its time to lay eggs. Otherwise they mostly aquatic....And can be found easily in small water bodies close to residential areas.

Unlike turtles that are rare to come across.

What he has is tortoise its very common.

Turtles and tortoises are closely related.
They are both reptiles from the same
family (Testudines or Chelonian). The main
difference between the two is that turtle is
the name given to water-dwellers and
tortoise is the name given to land-dwellers.
... Its shell is lighter and more streamlined
than that of a tortoise.

baba na turtle

I did a little more research and differentiating turtles from tortoises is harder than merely looking at them. You have to know their names and what it looks like to actually say this is a turtle or tortoise.

My initial comment is a green turtle specific characteristic.

I once trained something of this kind when I was still in junior secondary School, it eats almost every kind of food human eats, once it sees me, it already knows food is ready or play time. Just back from school one afternoon and I discovered it was dead, still don't know what happened to it till today....it was sad

If it has scales on legs and shell is hard, it is a tortoise. If the body is smooth and leathery, and legs are flippers and smooth, then it is a turtle. But from the shell, it looks like a tortoise. The shell looks very hard.
Don't drown it in bucket of water. Keep it in a moist garden with wet soil and vegetables and access to drinking water
Oga, you are confused, you said he should kept it in a moist and wet soil, yet it's a Tortoise to you, how come?
That thing there is a Turtle, all Tortoises are Turtles but not all Turtles are Tortoises.

Dear OP,

I am glad you don't plan to kill the poor animal you caught on the wild. I share your love for animals. They are just amazing and each is very important in our ecosystem. And that's why we need to preserve them and not imprison them in the name of pets.

It's extremely unfair to keep an animal you don't understand. You might have good intentions but you'll end up hurting the poor thing both emotionally and physically. For example, you kept it in a bright coloured bucket meanwhile, the animal prefers an environment that blends with it's dark colour. You'll restrict its movement and keep it lonely (it's a wild animal so you, a human, don't count as a companion). It is constantly in shock/fear. These will only stress the poor thing. Most wild animals basically just have eating and mating as their sole endeavour; even if you provide this one with food, are you going to mate with it? By keeping this animal, you are obliterating the possibility of it mating and procreating with others thus impacting negatively on its already dwindling population.

Keeping wild animals in captivity for our own amusement (though we tactfully use the expression 'as pet') is, by all indications, very selfish and inconsiderate.

I, therefore, beseech you to kindly reconsider and take the poor thing back to it's natural habitat. Going by the little I can perceive of your personality, I am very confident you'll hearken to my plea and so would like to thank you in advance.

Warm Regards.
Etrange

Yes of course, it's an intelligent question. Because even you don't know the difference between Tortoise and Turtle. So therefore, paddle your canoe and get ready to learn.
