Obasanjo never participated in any coup and he was the only millitary head of state who handed power to a civilian willingly

Good but be sincere and honest, do you people listen to him today?

You need to define “you people”. Do you mean Yoruba people or Nigerians?

Read this:

In anticipation of eastern secession, Gowon moved quickly to weaken the support base of the region by decreeing the creation of twelve new states to replace the four regions. Six of these states contained minority groups that had demanded state creation since the 1950s. Gowon rightly calculated that the eastern minorities would not actively support the Igbos, given the prospect of having their own states if the secession effort were defeated. Many of the federal troops who fought the civil war, known as the Biafran War, to bring the Eastern Region back to the federation, were members of minority groups.
http://countrystudies.us/nigeria/70.htm

Do you know that many ignorant Nigerians still say that it was Ironsi who abolished the 4 Regions and destroyed true federalism in Nigeria with decree 34? But here you are confirming it was Gowon who abolished the Regions to prevent secession.

Anyone who thinks that Gowon abolished the Regions to prevent the East from seceding is ignorant. Gowon created 12 states and gave half the states to his Northern Region! If Gowon wanted to give the minorities of the East their own states, he could have done so without giving the North any state.

Gowons state creation move was all about empowering the North, weakening the federating units, making the centre stong. It was all about "divide and rule"

Even the minorities that got states, resource control was taken away from them and the fiscal policy was reversed so that those states were useless

In Nigeria today, the more states you have, the bigger your federal allocation, the more Senators you have, the more politicians you have at the NASS.

The North that was one Region today has 19 states while the South that was 3 Regions has only 17 states

You didn't read what I shared with you.

Since the 1950s, there had been minority group grievances. Gowon merely exploited it by creating states.

For example, it could be compared to giving the Igbos presidency to counter the cry for secession.

It all depended on which region had the most grievous minorities.

Gowon achieved his aim because by leaning towards reducing one tribe's dominance over the others, he was able to get the support of many minority groups who fought against Biafra.

Why are you convulsing ?
Revisionism seems to be the past time of ipob louts lately .
I laugh in unification decree grin

Nyamuri osu mai gala are good for nothing scum of earth whose only reason for existence is to perpetrate heinous crimes .
Because your destiny revolves around raping pre pubertal girls in the numerous baby factories scattered in the erosion ravaged and landlocked Alaibo doesn't mean that it is the way of life of others .

Apparently , you are the one with the single digit IQ with nothing meaningful to contribute .
Well, I wouldn't blame you because this is not gala and fanyogo hawking .

That said , this silly thread is a piece of shit only fit for flat headed ipob cum Aba made jews' consumption.

But before I take my leave , lemme burst some of the op's propaganda,

The remnants of the Balewa government were coerced by Ironsi to drop power not the nonsense the op typed .

The riot that greeted the unification decree promulgated by Ironsi in the North already made nonsense of the op's claim of Ironsi's pseudo federalism . The demonic unification decree was actually drafted by another greedy Ibo in the person of Prof Ben Nwabueze .

Honestly , I used to think Ojukwu was the greatest coward in the history of the world's military but Ironsi's cowardice made Ojukwu's pale into insignificance .

Ironsi as the head of state couldn't live in the millitary barrack but was living in a boat on the lagos lagoon. So much for a military General . cheesy

In any case , Ironsi was an usurper . He was made the GOC only because of the satanic NPC Fulani / Ibo NCNC alliance of the first republic . The British army commander actually recommended Ogundepo as the most suitable and most qualified candidate to lead the Nigerian Military .

Ironsi definitely had a prior knowledge of the January 1966 Ibo coup or ethnic cleansing .

Ademulegun a Yoruba man who was the 2IC in the Nigerian millitary was killed with his pregnant wife in that ill fated coup . Maimalari who was also the highest ranked Northerner in the millitary then was also killed .
But somehow , Ironsi escaped miraculously same way Azikwe and Micheal Okpara escaped unscathed.

Sardauna , Balewa and Akintola, Okotie Eboh were murdered in cold blood.

Ironsi then decided to pamper his kinsmen that perpetrated this crime against humanity by safely turking them away in some Eastern cells where they were purportedly treated like kings .

He further added salt to injury by promulgating the demonic Decree 34 .

Well , what goes around comes around . 6 months later , Ironsi had a re match with destiny and was also killed by the Northern avengers .
The Abokis didn't stop there but went further to lay waste to over 3 million Ibos .
The rest like they say is history .

PS:

Even the author of that unification decree is filled with regrets today .
Below is the author (Nwabueze) of the unification decree crying and staining Atiku with catarr and hot tears .
That singular decree subjugated the rest of the Nation under the Fulani hegemony today .

The Hausa/Fulani are now the ones enjoying what the Ibos thought they would enjoy with that satanic decree.
Only if the short sighted Ibos knew!!!

Cure your ignorance with these facts

Fact 1: Ironsi was not part of the first coup, he put down the coup. Who would foil a coup they are part of?

Fact 2: You said that Ironsi coerced the remnants of the Balewa Regime to hand over power to him? If that is true then it is to Ironsi's credit. All those who came after Ironsi shot, killed, arrested, detained and tortured anyone who stood between them and power. They did not waste time trying to coerce anybody.

Fact 3: Decree 34 did not do anything to Nigeria. That decree recognized the 4 Regions, their right to exist and control their resources and maintained the revenue sharing formular and fiscal independence agreed at independence. Contrast that to Gowons decree 14 a year later. Gowons decree 14 abolished all for regions, replaced them with 12 states, took away resource control, abolished the revenue sharing formular agreed at independence and reversed the fiscal policy. Decree 34 was never the problem, the problem was that Ironsi was Igbo. All those who said that decree 34 was demonic were they same people who a year later, cheered Gowons decree 14 that was a thousand times worse that Ironsi's decree 34. Total hypocrisy

Fact 4: Some people say that Ironsi did not punish the coup plotters within the 6 months he was in power. Gowon did not punish them either in the one year he was in power before the war started. But nobody talk about Gowon because he is a Northerner, they talk about Ironsi because he is Igbo

It is clear that Ironsi's only crime was being Igbo

Gowon achieved his aim because by leaning towards reducing one tribe's dominance over the others, he was able to get the support of many minority groups who fought against Biafra.

People like you have been deceived. I do not deny that there was a clamour by minorities to have their own Regions. The midwest state was created out of the Western Region due to such clamour and there was an agitation for a COR Region to be created out of the Eastern Region.

What Im saying is that what Gowon did by abolishing the Regions and giving the minorities their own state in the Eastern Region was not for the benefit of the minorities but for the benefit of the North

Gowon abolished the Eastern Region and replaced it with three states, East central state, Cross River state and Rivers state. But what Gowon gave with one hand, he took away with the other. While the minorities where jumping up that they now have Cross River and Rivers States, Gowon took away resource control, removed the revenue sharing formular agreed at independence and reversed the fiscal policy.

The effect of this is that the states Gowon created were worthless as their resources were transferred to federal government and the reversed fiscal policy meant that the Federal government now paid for the states to exist. From as much 75% derivation they got in the Regions, the new states got whatever they FG decided they should get. They even had to fight to get 13% derivation. Meanwhile, the North that was one Region got 6 states, and as a result, got 3 times the allocation the minorities got.

The minorities only jumped from frying pan straight into the fire. Their resources were stolen, they were reduced to slaves of the North and marginalised even more than they were in the old Eastern Region.

Why would Ironsi and Ojukwu be fighting to put down a coup they had prior knowledge of and supported? Does that make any sense?

Ironsi's decree only unified the structure of the civil service, it did not tamper with true federalism. If anyone tampered with true federalism, it was Gowon and his stupid state creation

Sir, it seems you don't know how decree no 34 came about
For your info, it's the most controversial decree.

Let me explain it down here.
Pls, read with open minded.

On assumption of power, General Aguiyi-Ironsi promulgated the Constitution (Suspension and Modification) Decree 1966. Decree No 1 dated January 17, 1966 but not published in the Official Gazette until March 4, 1966. He then issued Public Order Decree No 33 dated May 24 1966 which dissolved eighty-one political associations and twenty-six tribal and cultural associations.

At the early stage of his tenure, he appointed a three-man advisory team made up of Chief Francis Nwokedi, a Permanent Secretary, Dr. Pius Charles Nwabafor Okigbo (1924-2000) and Colonel Patrick Anwunah, who later became Chairman and Head of the Orientation Committee at that time.

He replaced the then Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Taslim Olawale Elias (1914-1991) with Chief Gabriel Chike Michael Onyiuke (SAN), former Director, Public Prosecution, Eastern Nigeria (1960-1965) from Nimo in the present Anambra state.

In a speech to the nation on January 28 1966, he denounced the evils of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa regime and outlined necessary reforms. ”All Nigerians”, he declared,” want an end to regionalism. Tribal loyalties and activities which promote tribal consciousness and sectional interests must give way to the urgent task of national reconstruction. The Federal Military Government will preserve Nigeria as one strong nation.”

He then went on to promise “administrative reforms” and referred specifically to several matters in which regional as well as personal interests were known to have had decisive influence. These were official appointments, public investments, and the universities. He promised that in the public services, efficiency and merit will be the criteria for advancement”. That industrial development would be “coordinated to avoid wasteful duplication of industrial projects”, and that the universities would be “re-orientated to serve the genuine interest of our people.”

Immediately after the speech two Governors kicked against the proposal. They were, Major General David Akpode Ejoor (83) from Ovu in the present Delta State, then serving as the Military Governor of the Mid-Western region and Major General Hassan Usman Katsina(1933-1995), who was then serving as Governor of the Northern region.

Lt. Col. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu (1933-2011), Military Governor of Eastern Region welcomed the decree while Lt. Col. Francis Adekunle Fajuyi (1926-1966), Military Governor of Western Region never commented on the promulgation of the decree.

Lt-Col Ejoor was reported as saying that the ’National Government’ set up by the army was the prelude to ‘the reintroduction of a unitary form of government’ and insisted that it would create future problems. Shortly afterwards, the Supreme Military Council announced that a senior government official, Mr. Nwokedi, had been asked to consider and to report to the Supreme Military Council on the establishment of ‘an administrative machinery for a united Nigeria’ and the ‘unification of the Public Services and Judicial Services.’

In his own speech on February 19 at the Kaduna Airport, the Governor of Northern region, Lt-Col. Hassan Katsina said he was not aware as a member of the then Supreme Military Council of the modalities for the proposed National Government. ”I am afraid the egg is about to be broken”.

On February 21 1966, General Aguiyi-Ironsi again addressed the nation on the issue. He said: “On the question of the political future of the country, the experiences and mistakes of the previous governments in the Federation have clearly indicated that far-reaching constitutional reforms are badly needed for peaceful and orderly progress towards the realization of our objectives. I have already touched on some of the major issues involved in recent broadcast to the nation. It has become apparent to all Nigerians that rigid adherence to ‘regionalism’, was the bane of the last regime and one of the main factors which contributed to its downfall. No doubt, the country would welcome a clean break with the deficiencies of the system of government to which the country has been subjected in the recent past. A solution suitable to our national needs must be found. The existing boundaries of governmental control will need to be re-adjusted to make for less cumbersome administration.’

As a follow-up on May 25, General Aguiyi-Ironsi promulgated the Constitution (Suspension and Modification)(No. 5) Decree 1966. Decree No. 34 (the ‘Unification Decree’).

After the promulgation, the country was thrown into turmoil which led to demonstration particularly in many parts of Northern Nigeria at that time. On his return to Kaduna on May 27, Col. Hassan Katsina was besieged with demands for an explanation. It was feared that in a unified service, Northerners would be at a disadvantage. It was no consolation that the Decree provided for the delegation of appointments and promotions, except the most senior, to Provincial Civil Service Commissions.

This copy and paste doesn't prove anything. Ironsi unified the civil service but there were regional governors (Katsina, Ejoor, Ojukwu, Fajuyi) who could make laws subject to the approval of the Federal Military Council

Can you show anywhere in this write up that decree 34 abolished Regionalism?

Though Aguiyi-Ironsi tried to dispel this notion by courting the aggrieved ethnic groups through political appointments and patronage, his failure to punish the coup plotters and the promulgation of the now infamous "Decree No. 34"—which abrogated the country's federal structure in exchange for a unitary one— crystallized this conspiracy theory

Please show me where such crap is written in Nigerian constitution or military code of conduct of either 1960 or 1963. This type of behavior, the regurgitation of nonsense planted by tribally engrossed section of Nigerian society, keeps Nigeria hopelessly behind the curve of progress in world. Decree34 has nothing to do with regional structure of Nigeria. The decree sought to unify civil service in Nigeria which is ironically used in Nigeria till date. If decree 34 abrogated federalism and regionalism, why did Ironsi appoint regional governors? Most of the times, Nigerians tend to display stark idiocy which is regrettable.

For the sake of argument, if you are smart as you would want us to believe, please explain how unification is unitary. The unification decree brought the civil service under one umbrella where level 14 in Enugu is the same thing as level 14 in Kano thereby sidelined the Emirs, their cronies and local authority in northern region of Nigeria. The same civil service structure created by decree 34 is being used in Nigeria today. Nigeria is simply a joke and earlier the shithole is disintegrated the better for all.

1. Who and who sat down with him to discuss the end of regionalism

2. Why is it that other leaders rejected it and only Ojokwu accepted it, except Fajuyi that didn't talk.

3. Why is it that there was crisis later after he made the speech in February

From the above bolded as schooled individual, does rigid adherence to ‘regionalism’ which was bane of last regime meant that regionalism should be abolished? Today we have federalism yet Nigerians yarn against it literally because of the manner which it is run does not mean Nigerians want federalism abolished. Ironsi even went further to change the structure of civil service in Nigeria so that it could have uniform appearance and remove the bad aspect of rigid regionalism he pointed out in his speech.

If he had abolished regionalism, would it not amount to foolhardy on part of Ironsi to appoint regional governors?
