Get it right, He didn't abolished it finished

It was gowon that created two more decree 8, 14 in addition to 34 which completely abolished regionalism.

Aguyi ironsi started it..

Maybe you should read more

Lt-Col Ejoor was reported as saying that the ’National Government’ set up by the army was the prelude to ‘the reintroduction of a unitary form of government’ and insisted that it would create future problems. Shortly afterwards, the Supreme Military Council announced that a senior government official, Mr. Nwokedi, had been asked to consider and to report to the Supreme Military Council on the establishment of ‘an administrative machinery for a united Nigeria’ and the ‘unification of the Public Services and Judicial Services.’
Nigerians must stand in the way of falsehood. Please do not join Gowon's decrees 8 and 14 with decree 34. It will amount to mockery of Nigerian educational system. The dumbass Gowon claimed decrees 8 and 14 abolished certain aspect of decree 34. When asked to show the aspect of decree34 abolished by his decrees, Gowon drew blank. Decree 34 was mere unification of civil service structure in Nigeria. Gowon abolished regionalism in Nigeria with decrees 8 and 14 which created states in place of regions and he appointed state administrators which Ukpabi Askia was one of them.

So in other words, you dont have anything practical that Ironsi abolished Regionalism and removed true federalism except that Ironsi said "All Nigerians want an end to Regionalism"

Well if you dont know it, know it now. Ironsi never abolished the Regions. In fact, all 4 Regions were existing and functioning even up to the day Ironsi was killed.

The person who abolished the Regions was Gowon. Gowon came in after Ironsi and enacted decree 14 of 1967 that abolished all 4 Regions and replaced them with 12 states. The decree is below

That mere unification you called it, it's more bigger than you thought.

Check this statement that was issued.

The Supreme Military Council met on 7 and 8 June 1966 and issued the following statement:

“The public must not be led to confuse the Military Government with government by a civilian regime under a constitution approved by the people. Nobody will expect the present Military Government to cease to function until new constitution has been approved or to be compelled to operate the old system of government with its obvious weakness. It cannot be too seriously emphasized that the Military Government while in office can only run the government as a military government under a unified command. It cannot afford to run five separate governments and separate services as if it were a civilian regime.

Final decisions on the territorial structure of the country and the public services will be matters for the Constituent Assembly and the referendum.

What do they mean by

1. 5 separate governments and separate services.

2. Military government while in office can only run the government as military. Remember the regions were operating on their own.

3. .......as if it were a civilian regime.
What does civilian regime means?
By abolishing the regions and making them come together?
By using resources of other regions?
By making the centre powerful?

It became bigger than what an undiscerning onlooker thought because the Emirs, political elites from northern region, cronies and local authority were rendered out of service. In addition, the Emirs and northern political elites jumped into the normal conspiracy theory that it was designed by Ironsi to bring more educated easterners to take over civil service jobs in northern region. Yet the goons turned around and shouted One-Nigeria. I want nothing but unconditional disintegration of shithole called Nigeria.

The military had suspended the Nigerian constitution and still maintained the regional structure of the republic. Anybody who thinks Nigeria remained the way it was during the era of civilian rule is either naïve or plain ignorance. During the era in discuss, regions where divided in county councils or local authorities. The local authorities were areas such as Emirates. The military abolished them and usher in Provinces and Divisions yet with regionalism. Today we have States and LGAs.

Sammy, enlightened Nigerians must have hands on their hips to save the county if it is not too late already. Nigerians want Nigeria to look like USA yet they talk about what is disadvantage or advantage to the regions hence a fight to rubbish.

What exactly did Ironsi start? Did Ironsi abolish the Regions or not? If you say he abolished the Regions then how come the 4 Regions were still in existence even to the day Ironsi died?

Gowon came in after Ironsi and within months, Gowon abolished the 4 Regions and replaced them with 12 states.

Dwelling on what Ironsi said, rather than what he actually did is the reasoning of kids. I dont care what Ironsi said, Im only interested in what he did and he did nothing wrong

Read this report carefully and tell me if there is nothing wrong with ironsi.

I also rest my case.

Google will bring up ignorant opinions like yours so don't go there grin So Ironsi criticising the weaknesses of regionalism under Tafawa Balewa = to abolishing the regions grin grin grin grin

I thought you had something real to offer. Now read carefully...Ironsi until he died, had regional governors who could make laws for their regions. He felt he could strengthen his govt by enacting decree 34 and unifying the civil service (ministries etc) . Gowon created states not Ironsi!

Is it clear now or do we have to connect your brain to a server before you can learn the facts

It means Ironsi criticised "intense" regionalism and enacted a decree and changed the names from regions to provinces but still retained administrators over those regional spaces. The question I ask is did he appoint governors for all the provinces? No! Did he abolish resource control? No!

Was the western region still collecting the bulk of revenue from the Lagos ports? Yes! Eastern region collecting bulk of income from oil and palm? Yes!

You can't just escape it that Irosin abolished it. grin

Abolishing is a gradual process.
He stated it
Gowon finished it.
Just accept the fact.

If he didn't started it, gowon won't be able to create more states.
In fact, he might not think of it.

But he stated by issuing Decree 34, abolishing Regionalism / federalism and then becoming A republic.

Why is it that among everyone of them, only Ojokwu accepted the decree grin

Lol grin @ "Abolishing is a gradual process". A military dictator does not need to do anything gradually because he has absolute power. Gowon did it in one swoop and took the regions out of existence. He created states, gave every state a governor and put them all 100% under his control. Something Ironsi didn't do. You are displaying cognitive dissonance (Google it grin) So it will be hard for you to accept the facts. Google searches lead you to information and you form an opinion after analysing what you read.

Gowon who took away regionalism, resource control and created useless states and feeding bottle federalism is your hero but Ironsi who retained regions under a different name but with all the perks like resource control is who you want to label a villain? Enjoy your tribalism, some of us will always use our brains and form objective opinions

Its called cognitive dissonance. Same reason why Nzeogwu, Ademoyega, Ifeajuna, Gibson Jalo coup is called an "Igbo coup" but Dimka, Parwang and Bisalla coup is not called a "middle belt/angas coup"

So Ademoyega, Gibson Jalo, Fola Oyewole etc are from South-South? The plotters of the coup that took out Murtala were 99% angas (Gowon tribe) but no one called it Angas coup. Why is that?

Well actually I don't know.
But judging the two senero is a bit different.

Like nzeogwu coup, leaders of North and West were killed leaving the leaders of East unkilled.

After the senero, Aguyi ironsi (igbo) came to took the government.

MAYBE that's why it's termed Igbo coup

gidgiddy:
Cure your ignorance with these facts

Fact 1: Ironsi was not part of the first coup, he put down the coup. Who would foil a coup they are part of?

Fact 2: You said that Ironsi coerced the remnants of the Balewa Regime to hand over power to him? If that is true then it is to Ironsi's credit. All those who came after Ironsi shot, killed, arrested, detained and tortured anyone who stood between them and power. They did not waste time trying to coerce anybody.

Fact 3: Decree 34 did not do anything to Nigeria. That decree recognized the 4 Regions, their right to exist and control their resources and maintained the revenue sharing formular and fiscal independence agreed at independence. Contrast that to Gowons decree 14 a year later. Gowons decree 14 abolished all for regions, replaced them with 12 states, took away resource control, abolished the revenue sharing formular agreed at independence and reversed the fiscal policy. Decree 34 was never the problem, the problem was that Ironsi was Igbo. All those who said that decree 34 was demonic were they same people who a year later, cheered Gowons decree 14 that was a thousand times worse that Ironsi's decree 34. Total hypocrisy

Fact 4: Some people say that Ironsi did not punish the coup plotters within the 6 months he was in power. Gowon did not punish them either in the one year he was in power before the war started. But nobody talk about Gowon because he is a Northerner, they talk about Ironsi because he is Igbo

It is clear that Ironsi's only crime was being Igbo
please go and read the decree 34 first before coming here to fool yourself with this stale victim mentality.

My brother, learned men knew Ironsi was a true Soldier and Patriot. Forget the nonsense some people spew against him just to paint him bad.

Other tribes accuse him of masterminding the coup while history says he was actually penciled for assassination by the coup plotters. They accused him of being tribalistic.

Some of our Igbo kinsmen do the worst by attacking him for not surrounding himself with igbo-only intelligence and security.

History is gradually vindicating him.

Fact 1: Ironsi was not part of the first coup, he put down the coup. Who would foil a coup they are part of?
If Ironsi were not a part of the coup. Nothing special about that. Gowon was also not part of the counter coup.

We have palace coups. The coup that ousted Gowon, the coup that ousted Shonekan.

All those who said that decree 34 was demonic were they same people who a year later, cheered Gowons decree 14 that was a thousand times worse that Ironsi's decree 34. Total hypocrisy
But Azikwe was Igbo. How come no one had any problem with him?

Fact 4: Some people say that Ironsi did not punish the coup plotters within the 6 months he was in power. Gowon did not punish them either in the one year he was in power before the war started. But nobody talk about Gowon because he is a Northerner, they talk about Ironsi because he is Igbo
So, Gowon who was trying to douse ethnic tension should have done what Ironsi was supposed to have done to douse the ethnic tension that eventually swallowed him? Suspicion followed the coup of January 1966, and for good reasons too. Not one prominent Igbo politician or officer was touched. Then, an Igbo became Head of State, and this Head of State refused to execute the coup plotters for sabotaging our democracy. If he had done the right thing, the Northerners wouldn't have become so suspicious about his part in the coup.

It is clear that Ironsi's only crime was being Igbo
Why do Igbos like playing the victim's card?

The remnants of the Balewa government were coerced by Ironsi to drop power not the nonsense the op typed .

The riot that greeted the unification decree promulgated by Ironsi in the North already made nonsense of the op's claim of Ironsi's pseudo federalism . The demonic unification decree was actually drafted by another greedy Ibo in the person of Prof Ben Nwabueze .

Honestly , I used to think Ojukwu was the greatest coward in the history of the world's military but Ironsi's cowardice made Ojukwu's pale into insignificance .

Ironsi as the head of state couldn't live in the millitary barrack but was living in a boat on the lagos lagoon. So much for a military General . cheesy

In any case , Ironsi was an usurper . He was made the GOC only because of the satanic NPC Fulani / Ibo NCNC alliance of the first republic . The British army commander actually recommended Ogundepo as the most suitable and most qualified candidate to lead the Nigerian Military .

Ironsi definitely had a prior knowledge of the January 1966 Ibo coup or ethnic cleansing .

Ademulegun a Yoruba man who was the 2IC in the Nigerian millitary was killed with his pregnant wife in that ill fated coup . Maimalari who was also the highest ranked Northerner in the millitary then was also killed .
But somehow , Ironsi escaped miraculously same way Azikwe and Micheal Okpara escaped unscathed.

Sardauna , Balewa and Akintola, Okotie Eboh were murdered in cold blood.

Ironsi then decided to pamper his kinsmen that perpetrated this crime against humanity by safely turking them away in some Eastern cells where they were purportedly treated like kings .

He further added salt to injury by promulgating the demonic Decree 34 .

Well , what goes around comes around . 6 months later , Ironsi had a re match with destiny and was also killed by the Northern avengers .
The Abokis didn't stop there but went further to lay waste to over 3 million Ibos .
The rest like they say is history .

PS:

Even the author of that unification decree is filled with regrets today .
Below is the author (Nwabueze) of the unification decree crying and staining Atiku with catarr and hot tears .
That singular decree subjugated the rest of the Nation under the Fulani hegemony till today .

The Hausa/Fulani are now the ones enjoying what the Ibos thought they would enjoy with that satanic decree.
Only if the short sighted Ibos knew!!!

In summary, Ironsi basically appointed his Igbo kinsmen into critical offices, the same thing we are blaming Bubu for today. What goes around truly comes around.

Sammy07:
Sir, it seems you don't know how decree no 34 came about
For your info, it's the most controversial decree.

Let me explain it down here.
Pls, read with open minded.

On assumption of power, General Aguiyi-Ironsi promulgated the Constitution (Suspension and Modification) Decree 1966. Decree No 1 dated January 17, 1966 but not published in the Official Gazette until March 4, 1966. He then issued Public Order Decree No 33 dated May 24 1966 which dissolved eighty-one political associations and twenty-six tribal and cultural associations.

At the early stage of his tenure, he appointed a three-man advisory team made up of Chief Francis Nwokedi, a Permanent Secretary, Dr. Pius Charles Nwabafor Okigbo (1924-2000) and Colonel Patrick Anwunah, who later became Chairman and Head of the Orientation Committee at that time.

He replaced the then Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Taslim Olawale Elias (1914-1991) with Chief Gabriel Chike Michael Onyiuke (SAN), former Director, Public Prosecution, Eastern Nigeria (1960-1965) from Nimo in the present Anambra state.

In a speech to the nation on January 28 1966, he denounced the evils of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa regime and outlined necessary reforms. ”All Nigerians”, he declared,” want an end to regionalism. Tribal loyalties and activities which promote tribal consciousness and sectional interests must give way to the urgent task of national reconstruction. The Federal Military Government will preserve Nigeria as one strong nation.”

He then went on to promise “administrative reforms” and referred specifically to several matters in which regional as well as personal interests were known to have had decisive influence. These were official appointments, public investments, and the universities. He promised that in the public services, efficiency and merit will be the criteria for advancement”. That industrial development would be “coordinated to avoid wasteful duplication of industrial projects”, and that the universities would be “re-orientated to serve the genuine interest of our people.”

Immediately after the speech two Governors kicked against the proposal. They were, Major General David Akpode Ejoor (83) from Ovu in the present Delta State, then serving as the Military Governor of the Mid-Western region and Major General Hassan Usman Katsina(1933-1995), who was then serving as Governor of the Northern region.

Lt. Col. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu (1933-2011), Military Governor of Eastern Region welcomed the decree while Lt. Col. Francis Adekunle Fajuyi (1926-1966), Military Governor of Western Region never commented on the promulgation of the decree.

In his own speech on February 19 at the Kaduna Airport, the Governor of Northern region, Lt-Col. Hassan Katsina said he was not aware as a member of the then Supreme Military Council of the modalities for the proposed National Government. ”I am afraid the egg is about to be broken”.

On February 21 1966, General Aguiyi-Ironsi again addressed the nation on the issue. He said: “On the question of the political future of the country, the experiences and mistakes of the previous governments in the Federation have clearly indicated that far-reaching constitutional reforms are badly needed for peaceful and orderly progress towards the realization of our objectives. I have already touched on some of the major issues involved in recent broadcast to the nation. It has become apparent to all Nigerians that rigid adherence to ‘regionalism’, was the bane of the last regime and one of the main factors which contributed to its downfall. No doubt, the country would welcome a clean break with the deficiencies of the system of government to which the country has been subjected in the recent past. A solution suitable to our national needs must be found. The existing boundaries of governmental control will need to be re-adjusted to make for less cumbersome administration.’

As a follow-up on May 25, General Aguiyi-Ironsi promulgated the Constitution (Suspension and Modification)(No. 5) Decree 1966. Decree No. 34 (the ‘Unification Decree’).

After the promulgation, the country was thrown into turmoil which led to demonstration particularly in many parts of Northern Nigeria at that time. On his return to Kaduna on May 27, Col. Hassan Katsina was besieged with demands for an explanation. It was feared that in a unified service, Northerners would be at a disadvantage. It was no consolation that the Decree provided for the delegation of appointments and promotions, except the most senior, to Provincial Civil Service Commissions.

BluntTheApostle:
So, Richard Akinjide is a Northerner abi?

I gave you the exact words of someone who witnessed the whole thing, and you are asking me to go and read a book.
Because Akinjide served the wishes of the northerners. It later brought discord between him and Awolowo during the Election leading to the second republic.

I for one I don't expect a Yoruba appointee to speak against his northern benefactor. Look for the book, "12 years of Military Rule" published by daily times.

What a beautiful lengthy piece of trash!

Even the coup plotters themselves confessed that Ironsi was penciled for assassination.

Your speculations and presumptions are as lame as they come.

Revisionism regardless of the semantics and half-truths you use won't help you. It only exposes your dubiousness. You can't change history.
