~Warns market leaders to abide by their undertaking
The Enugu State Government has expressed dismay over what it described as "a total disregard and breach of the undertaking made by the Ogbete Main Market Traders Association and the Pharmaceuticals Dealers Association" for the partial and guided reopening of the market.

It would be recalled that as fallout of the recent meeting the Enugu State Government held with market leaders and security agencies, it was unanimously agreed that the Ogbete Main Market, Enugu, will be partially reopened on May 4, 2020, in the overall interest of the public.

This was after leaders of the two market associations undertook that they will strictly abide by the agreed conditions and protocol issued by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) "which includes the observance of social/physical distancing, high level of personal hygiene and the compulsory use of face masks".

Unfortunately, the conditions were violated today, the first day of the partial reopening of the market.

Reacting to the development, the state government in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Nnanyelugo Chidi Aroh, also expressed deep concern "about the implications of this breach to the overall health and safety of the citizens of Enugu in this critical period of the COVID-19 Pandemic".

The government therefore directed the leadership of the Ogbete Main Market Traders Association and the Pharmaceutical Dealers Association , to strictly abide by the conditions for the partial and guided reopening of the market.

The statement warned that "the state government will act swiftly to protect the health and safety of the people of Enugu in the event of any further breach of the conditions for the partial and guided reopening of the Market" .

Read full text of the statement:

"BREACH OF CONDITIONS FOR THE PARTIAL AND GUIDED RE-OPENING OF THE OGBETE MAIN MARKET

" Recall that on the 1st of May 2020, the Enugu State Government after a meeting with Ogbete Main Market leaders and Security agencies approved a partial and guided opening of Ogbete Main Market in the overall interest of the people of Enugu.

" The resolution to re-open the market was made upon the plea and undertaking by the leaders of Ogbete Main Market Traders Association and Ogbete Pharmaceutical Dealers Association to strictly abide by the protocol issued by the Nigerian Centre of Disease Control which includes the observance of social/physical distancing, high level of personal hygiene and the compulsory use of face masks.

"Unfortunately, the events of today at Ogbete main market was a total disregard and breach of the undertaking made by the Ogbete Main Market Traders Association and the Pharmaceuticals Dealers Association.

"The State Government is seriously concerned about the implications of this breach to the overall health and safety of the citizens of Enugu in this critical period of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

"Therefore, the Ogbete Main Market Trader Association and the Pharmaceutical Dealers Association are hereby directed to strictly abide by the conditions for the partial and guided opening of the market.

" The State Government will act swiftly to protect the health and safety of the people of Enugu in the event of any further breach of the conditions for the partial and guided opening of the Market.
Nnanyelugo Chidi Aroh MNIM, FIDRPN, ACArb., Hon. Commissioner for Information, Enugu State"

Either way the situation is unfavourable to Nigerians. Sit-at-home or semi-lockdown. No one is favourable

Another lockdown is coming after we reinfect ourselves, and comiunity transmission begins

We cannot be crying over loss of jobs and unemployment while we want lockdowns and expect salaries and pallatives..

There should be no more lockdowns... protect and guard yourself, aswell as use your initiative to make better judgements..

- Download mobile apps
- Use instant transfers
- Enforce bus drivers to obey laws or opt for Ubers and personal cars.
- Wear your face mask
- Use sun shades if you can to avoid itchy eyes
- maintain social distancing
- use hand sanitizers efficiently
- make only essential trips

Most importantly, run from ignorant people who dont take their life serious... they are the dispatchers of this virus.

The fallout will be the rapid increase and spread of the virus. May I ask if truly Nigerian political leaders are not playing politics and pranks with this virus? With stories of embezzlement of funds where is the will to tackle it effectively. Lockdown has not worked nationwide as government totally failed with enforcement.

The people of Enugu state should know that the virus no da show for face.
Another important factor to note is that their was virtually nothing like palliative shared in the state.the people have been locked down without nothing so you can understand the rush for survival. The state should know they are responsible for this actions we see here.
The virus have exposed most incompetent governors, which Enugu state governor is one.it could be recalled that the state was among the first to record a case but as we speak nothing is in place to tackle the spread of the virus.not even a single face mask have been shared out.the borders are still very much porous as ever.

If only the government have been faithful and truthful to their selves in distributing the palliatives, they wouldn't have been this mad rush.

Just imagine. 2 weeks from today and people will start falling from the aftermath of block heads.

Still don't understand why Nigerians just don't care about anything.

E be like say we be leftover creation and that's why we behave like leftovers. After all, leftovers don't care where they're put or stored.

Nigerians are something else.
look as if we don't obey rules and regulations in this country but take us out to another country, come and see how we will behave above board.
So you see , so many things we do in this country are sometimes deliberate.
Re: Ogbete Market: Enugu Government Unhappy With Breach In NCDC Guidelines by Engrduke: 5:18am On May 05, 2020
This is serious.
What's the way forward now?
Lockdown/ staying at home is counterproductive.
Going back to the streets is inimical to our general health.
We are just in a precarious situation in Nigeria as far as COVID-19 is concerned.
God have mercy on us.

That thing that happened in Kano is looking at them in the face.

If you say it is because of hunger, what of become of them if they fall sick?

Does it mean that all of the people that went to the market yesterday went back home with money?

for a fact that you and I are on Nairaland (one of the forums with highly educated people) I don't fear for us, my concern is the unexposed , uneducated people we have out there who would become host for the virus out of ignorance, this are the ones who would make the numbers go higher ... now Jigawa is having an outbreak of strange death like its neighboring state Kano... wont Buhari be forced to re introduce a lockdown on Jigawa
