lol not surprising since blacks are the minority. What about their entertainment industry, are blacks doing well there?. Cus i knw blacks esp Nigerians are doing well in British rap scene and in movies too.

Oh I can answer this one as I’m in Berlin. I believe Germany needs to see more black artists and talents. They really appreciate talent. In Berlin you can stand in front of the train station with a tea cup and spoon and play a beat. In 10 minutes, people will gather there and start dancing. Even those going to work will stop and dance.

There are black musicians here but most of them don’t have the talent they think they have. I meet them every time. I also know some black rappers. There’s a Nigerian group of rappers that are pulling wave here and host jam session at Badehaus in Berlin. There are some singers too. But it’s mostly the Black Americans taking up these spaces.

One thing I hate is the African musicians here tend to only do Raggae music. Whenever I hear there’s an African band playing, they’re singing Raggae. Germans are obsessed with Afro beat and Afro pop. They’re also obsessed with rap. They have something called Deutsche Rap. It is basically rap in German language. The Turks have taken over that one and it makes me laugh.
Germans want to be like black Americans so bad, they’re obsessed with black culture and music.

If you’re a musician coming here, be talented. Do the music and do it well. Don’t start sleeping with all the girls because you’re getting some attention. That’s one way to fail. Germany is not like the UK and you’ll probably never go international. Unless you expand your network outside Germany.

You can also play on the street. What we call “busking”. People will stop and listen to you and give you money or buy your CD. A lot of musicians make a living like that. They really appreciate talent, even if it’s not so good. Just don’t expect to get famous. Even German musicians are not famous outside their town.

They mostly eat everything but they can’t cook everything. Their bread is hard like a rock and they love it. I hate that strong bread and buy the soft sliced bread. They eat lots of meat, sausages, pasta, pizza. Oh and they don’t cook with spices.

I always tell my friends when we’re having a get together “pls don’t make chicken, I will make it”. Their chicken is plain white chicken with no spices. The only thing they add is salt and a pinch of dry pepper. The day they saw me cooking chicken they were screaming. THAT’S A LOT OF SPICES!!! But they loved the taste.

I saw my flat mate cooking rice with chicken breast and he poured milk into it. I almost threw up. They also eat in small portions. So you better eat before you go to their house for lunch or you’ll stay hungry. They can eat 2 slices of bread with one egg and call it breakfast. They rather drink a lot of beer and wine.

One thing is for sure, Germans love to enjoy themselves. They love eating out in restaurants. They also love international cuisines because their own food is blah blah. So if you can cook, they will love to be your friend. They are always hungry and love to eat. In general, they eat most things we eat but they cook them differently.
Haaa cheesy
U are too funny cheesy
Thank u.

Lol at blah blah food.
It's because they hate mingling and integrating with others that's why they haven't copied any good recipe from those living with them.

I know that bread, I they stone you with it, u will have bruises cheesy

Even if you ignore their blatant racism/total idiocy, they're still ugly people with nasty food and an ugly culture. Their country is ugly too. Surely you have better options. If you don't, don't stay long. Use the country for training and go somewhere better.

Arabs dominate the rap industry in Germany. I've listened to a couple of rap songs and most aren't from Germans but from foreigners who grew up here.

My favourite german Rapper is CAPITAL BRA, he's from Ukraine and popular too.

Daniel, you are doing a good job. I agree with everything you said except where you say racism is worse than tribalism.

In tribalism, people of the same color, same country even similar cultures hate and discriminate against each other based on the fact they speak different language only.

In racism, people of different color, different country, different language and different cultures discriminate against others. Now look at the gap here. Everything is different, now compare it with tribalism where everything is the same except language.

If people in the same country can hate each other so much, what is the big deal in racism? Having experienced conc tribalism in Nigeria,As someone living abroad, i don't expect love from whites by default. If you are nice, good and fine. Ironically, i have not experienced racism yet

One thing i have noticed about racism abroad is that the chances of racists temporarily shunning racism to embrace the one the hate when you show you have something to offer is high. In tribalism, even if you like be the only solution to the problem, as long as your name is okoro or Ayodele etc, you can never get the chance to offer your solution, they would rather die.

Look at Obama for instance. He is black, his name is not Jones, Smith etc but a Kenyan native name. However, when the chips are down, in a country of paltry 12% black, he won an election beating his white challenger because he is the better candidate. Obama will never win an election in Osun state for instance as an igbo man or win an election in Abia state as a yoruba man. It does not matter if he was born and bread in Osun or Abia, speaks the language fluently or the most qualified to rescue the state, he will not get support.

There are lots of Nigerians abroad that have broken the barrier of racism by merit because they offer value more than their white host. They whites had no choice than to swallow their racism. They won elections even when they are minority, they head top organisations bossing the whites even with their tribal names etc
See, even you who have faced racism in Germany stand a better chance of leading a top organisation in Germany or winning an election in Germany when the chips are down more than you winning an election outside your tribe in Nigeria no matter how qualified and capable you are.

Bros, if you want to see how rugged tribalism is, just peep into nairaland politics section. I no say make you stay there for long ooo otherwise you won't know when you will join them and become one tribalists, Lol. The hate oozing out from our fellow country men fit boil beans. Racism dey learn work.
see my brother the effect tribalism have and the effect racism has are two different things. Now in tribalism, you can actually identify a particular set of group that is tribalistic and avoid them. The only thing tribalism does is to deny you opportunity that doesn't mean you cannot have friends with other tribes, that doesn't mean your friends in other tribes can't create opportunities for you, that doesn't mean you cannot get help and support from other tribes, that doesn't mean we cannot unite during football matches. Tribalism is more of political while racism is more of cultural. But racism is deadly because the Europeans are subconscious about race, I even heard is taught in some schools. When something is subconscious, you might act as a racist without knowing it, unless someone calls you out. You can leave your house and someone will provoke you without knowing it, even when the person cannot control it. Infact racism now is subtle and you can feel it if you work in a place where as a black man you are the minority. Racism can be structural, look at what is happening in UK were BAME doctors making 21 percent have 72 percent mortality rate or America were balvks are more in prison. Racial acts creates that feeling you don't belong here and it kills you inside gradually which is deadly which can lead to depression or even mental breakdown while Tribalism don't as far as your tribe have the population. Imagine someone looking at you angrily without provocation or grumpy attitude or even denying you opportunity or not renting property to you or crossing the road when you approach or not sitting close to you in a bus atleast a Yoruba man will sit close to an hausa man in a bus.
Not discouraging anyone, if I had read threads like this, I won't have taken a hit on my earlier days here.

What can you say about the state of Baden-wurttemberg, Frieburg to be precise ,never heard anyone talk about that place

Baden Wurttemberg is a rich state. Stuttgart is the most popular city there. I’ve been to Stuttgart, Mannheim and Karlsruhe but I’ve never been to Freiburg. I heard Freiburg is a student city. Stuttgart is a car city, a lot of people work in car companies and make a lot of money. They are very rich but the have a reputation for being very stingy. They spend all their money on luxury but will complain about price of chicken in Supermarket.

Mannheim is great and rich as well. I prefer Mannheim to Stuttgart because people are more relaxed there. Karlsruhe is where you find a lot of American soldiers. Generally, people are just about their work in this state. It is good for finding a job and getting good salary. Even in Heidelberg, they are rich.

Yes there are clubs where people are naked and having sex. KitKat is every Friday and Saturday with different costumes and fetishes. Even the girls selling ticket at the door are naked. When you get in, you take your clothes off. You can be totally naked or wear your underwear but you’ll see lots of naked people, some having sex and some dancing. No phones allowed. There are other clubs too.

But in general the most sex, naked clubs are for the gays. They have more parties than anyone else. Lots of straight people go there as well, mostly for the drugs and to be entertained. You’ll hear lots of stories and meet lots of crazy people. Lots of tourists from London and Ireland as well who just came to party.

Don’t get it twisted though, most people you see there are lawyers, doctors, bankers, and have major jobs. They work a lot in the week and in the weekend they change to beast mode. When you see them in the club they’re nasty and wild. On Monday morning they get sober, put on their suit and go to work. You won’t even know it’s the same person that was gangbanging all weekend.

I’ve never seen or heard of a Nigerian politician going there. You also have to be careful though cos that’s where people get a lot of sexual diseases. It gets extremely wild in there and can be addictive.

Please permit me to weigh in on the issue of racism. I have lived in the UK for almost 10 years now. I have not experienced open racism. The most open, in my opinion has been people refusing to sit near me on trains unless it's a busy service, which I tend to like in the sense that I get to stretch my legs and wriggle around as I like.
What I can say is prevalent is institutional racism. In my opinion this is worse because it is hard to prove. If someone abuses you racially, you can reprt to the police and you will most certainly get justice if you have your evidence but in an institution when you are passed over for promotion or not given the raise you deserve then they can attribute several reasons to it. Sometimes you even question whether it is due to racism or something else. I have had my boss sing my praises to the high heavens but not matched that financially or even in sending me on training. A Nigeria I worked with kept saying the guy is a racist but I did not see reason. Eventually when it was time for redundancy, I was deemed not to have the required experience to work on the project available and so had to go. Mind you from day one in the company, I was doing the work of a senior and sometimes principal engineer even as a graduate and they were charging clients sometime about £80ph for my services while paying me as a graduate. All my appraisals were "exceeded expectation". Every year I will ask for training and be told either I "do not need it" or "there's not enough budget".
A friend of mine also told me about his experience at his company (A global renowned financial giant) where they had a ranking of performance of employees and consistently in the top 5 were at least 3 Nigerians but when it came to bonuses, they will give excuses on why they didn't get big bonuses, often saying although they did very well on the job but scored low when it came to behavioral aspect and people skills. What that effectively meant was that they either don't go out to eat with them or perhaps licked their asses. The Nigerian that did was rewarded. On one occasion, a person that reported to him was moved to another team as lead and bought back to his team to be his lead.
It is tough to accept sometimes. You see a lot of Nigerians as contractors in the UK, I believe it is mostly because they feel they have little chance of getting to the top management level and so going contract is the best way of making more money that they otherwise will not earn as staff and avoiding office politics altogether. Contractor - do your job, go home and you get paid your agreed rate, no need to bother about subjective appraisal. They will hire you because you know your job and when your contract ends, you move on o the next or if you have gathered enough money, start a business, buy properties, send your children to good schools, go on holidays.

Someone talked about Adoke, each state in Nigeria has a Minister and must also be represented in various agencies so tribalists will favour almost every tribe in Nigeria.
On the issue of BAME doctors/health workers, I believe there are several contributory factors to the disproportionate number of deaths which may not necessarily be due to racism.
My theory is that
1. There are a higher proportion of BAME health workers in the NHS than White when compared to the population and these people are more likely to put their life on the line while on duty than their white counterparts. There were reports on some white doctors abandoning their jobs for fear og COVID-19.
2. Lifestyle - Our lifestyle, especially the food we eat is not healthy. An average Nigerian will want to eat eba and other starcy and oily food but not put in the corresponding exercise in to mitigate the effects. our forefathers ate these kinds of food because they lived an active life. They went to the farms and burn off all the excess calories and ate less processed food but we the younger ones just want to eat and sit behind a computer. The whites are generally careful about unhealthy diet and take exercise serious. In London during lunch time, I see a lot of white people jugging and rarely see blacks doing same (me inclusive).
There are other factors as well.

Let’s talk about Ticket Inspector, we call them “controllers”. They are the people that check your ticket in the train and catch those traveling without a valid ticket.

They’re mostly Turkish and Arab. It’s like a game and everybody hates them. They’re part of the Berlin culture, so much that Berliners have devised ways to fish them out and avoid them. They change tactics every time. They mostly wear black jackets. Just look out for that mean looking Turkish/Arab dude with a black jacket and swollen pocket (that’s where they hide their scanner).

They are usually 2 people in one section of the train and come in from opposite doors. The moment the train door closes and you hear “Farschein bitte”, everybody’s heart starts to beat. They’re also very wicked and rude. But Berliners challenge them all the time. If you don’t have a ticket or have an invalid ticket, they escort you out of the train, take your information and fine you.

Fine for riding without a ticket is €60. If they catch you up to 3 times in a year, they can take you to court (or so they say, but it’s bullsh..) You’ll see the foreigners speaking English and pretending not to understand what they’re saying. Some will tell lies that they’re tourists and don’t know the law.
You can lie your way through if you’re good. Sometimes you argue until they get tired and leave you. Sometimes some people zoom off in full speed as soon as they step out of the train. They won’t chase you.

Berliners also help each other. Someone with a ticket can carry one person with their ticket from 8:00 pm everyday and all day in the weekend. So when a ticket inspector is in the train, if your neighbor sees you don’t have a ticket, they can cover for you with their ticket.

Some people with ticket also devised a means to help others. They delay the inspectors by pretending to search for their ticket. They waste time until the train gets to the next stop and people can escape. It’s a funny situation but also wild. I love Berlin.

What is a day in life like, for someone who is working in Berlin.

You wake up at 6:00 am, shower or not, drink coffee, get ready for work. You take the train or ride your bike. If you take the train, you might or might not run into a ticket inspector. Sitting in the train, you smell people’s body odor and everyone’s face is looking like someone slapped them.

You get to work, greet your colleagues, settle in and start working. You have a 1 hour break or 30 minutes break twice. You work from 9-5, depending on your company. After work you’re ready to go.

You sit in the train on your way home, this time people are smiling and more chilled, someone comes into the train to beg for money with a dog by his side. A few minutes later, there’s an Arab woman coming in the train with her harmonica to play “when the saints are marching in”, she plays it 100 times everyday for the entire year. You want her to shut up.

After a few minutes, there’s musician coming in the train with his guitar to sing and ask for money. At the next stop, there’s a crazy person walking in the train with funny fashion and heavy boots. Then there are the ones with their eye lashes almost sweeping the windows. You look at them and laugh inside.
Later, someone comes into the train and starts making noise because they’re drunk or took too much drugs. You ignore them or put on your ear phones and listen to music.

You step out the train, there’s a musician playing outside the train station and people are chilling, listening. You stop by the supermarket to buy some groceries then you go home to eat and relax. Later you go out to meet your friends for drinks and chill. You stay out until 10pm and go home to sleep. Next day, repeat.

The Africans not changing cities is very true for most, if not all developed countries. They would rather be drinking garri and stay in a city that doesn't offer them much instead of moving to a different city.

Good thread. Offers alot of exposure about life in Germany as a black immigrant.

What about the none working class in Berlin...

You wake up any time you want, cook and eat, continue watching your movie from where you stopped last night. Your friends text you what time and where to meet.

At 12pm or so, you go out to meet your friends. You take the train without a ticket and watch out for inspectors. Lots of people chilling outside as well, the city center is packed, people are shopping, some chilling in the parks, noise making everywhere, art performers performing on the street, tourists walking up and down taking pictures, Irish tourists that are already drunk at 2:00pm, making noise and chatting.

Other parts of the city are busy as well, people like you, doing everything outside. Arab and Turkish shops are busy with people eating Döner (similar to sharwama). You and your friends walk around and chill, take pictures for Instagram, then you stop at Primark to buy cheap jeans or you go to Saturn to look at the latest phones.

At 4pm you’re hungry, you and your friends go to a restaurant to eat. It’s already 5pm and people are already returning from work. You’re still hanging out, parading the city. Then you sit somewhere to gist and look at people on the street. 8:00pm you go to a bar or a friend’s place to chill and drink. You stay there until you like to go home. Next day, repeat or stay at home.

See the statistics BAME doctors 19 percent White doctors 81 percent
Mortality BAME doctors 72 percent White Doctors 28 percent
While in patient deaths there are more white than BAME deaths. So your theory is not valid.

Weekends in Berlin,

From 8:00pm on Friday, it’s already party mode everywhere. Everyone is in beast mode. The ticket inspectors don’t even bother at this time. The trains run all night, also late night busses and trams. Taxis are already waiting outside every club. People have changed their work outfit and are ready to party and hang out.

In the train people are holding and drinking beer, lots of noise making, laughter and shouting. You already know who is going to which club, by looking at what they’re wearing. The police are more active on the streets, the bars are open and packed. People smoking in bars, loud music you can barely hear what your friends are saying.

At 12:00 am in the midnight, that’s when the clubs begin to open. You’ll see people waiting in line to get in. The lines can be very long. The bouncers are standing outside, some people have a guest list, so they get in faster. The parties are going on. You barely hear anyone speaking German. It’s all English. Lots of tourists who came to party for the weekend. Some of them are lost and asking for directions to a certain club.

You also find bars with DJs and people dancing in them. Irish pub is full as well and too noisy, filled with drunk Irish people. Holding beer in one hand and scratching their private part with the other hand. They talk to everyone and make friends with everyone. The next day, they won’t remember anything they did.

You also see people in bars who are attending a meet-up event to make new friends in Berlin. You also find some groups that are for people into BDSM, slave-master sex fetish and role playing. You have to join their group to be part of it. No judgement

At 2:00 am, people are already wasted. You see people vomiting on the street, in the train, some passing out from too much beer, some cannot walk, their friends have to carry them. The drug dealers are at the train stations passing stuff. Some live music on the street as well.

At 4:00 am. People have become hungry and stop at a Turkish/Arab shop to eat Döner. Some take the taxi and go home with the person they met at the club. Clubs are still going on.
Some clubs go from Friday night until Monday morning. No sleep, no stopping. You can go home to sleep and return, but don’t wash your stamp away from your hand, otherwise you may have to buy another ticket to get into the club.

This happens on Friday and Saturday nights.

Sundays are Ruhetag. Meaning: quiet day, no noise making. Just for people to spend time with their families and have a peaceful moment at home. You can go out and have fun but keep it quiet.

This is also a day for parks and biking. People go to lakes, hiking, running, swimming etc. people also visit their parents/kids on this day. Most people are at home sleeping after a weekend of partying.

The parks are full in the summer, this is also the day we hold carnivals and festivals on the streets. We have a cultural festival similar to Nottinghill carnival and the main event is on a Sunday. But in general, Sundays are quiet days in Germany. The trains also stop running from 12:00 am. So if you’re out late, you may want to use a taxi or a late night bus.

However, some clubs are still going on and people inside don’t even know what day it is. Those clubs also don’t have mirrors in the toilet, so you cannot see yourself to know how wasted you look. You just know it’s Monday morning when some people start changing to their work outfit. Oh yes, some people change in the club and go to work on Monday morning from the club.

Who said that? When you get a job, they pay you what they pay your white colleagues in the same field. They won’t pay you less because you’re black. You just may not get the position or promotion you deserve but you get paid like everyone else. Get a job first. If your salary is not enough to buy a house, then you can’t buy a house. That is not a black or white thing.
If you get a well paying job and you can save, good for you. Buy the house you want, nobody will stop you. I know some black people who own houses here. Most people usually buy a flat, both white and black.

Thank you for this. Please explain how racism is responsible for that as I am unable to link the two.

Institutionally BAME were placed in a disadvantaged position in the fight against COVid. If a BAME called in sick,he is likely to be sacked.

This cannot be true else the NHS should be ready to ready to cough out huge sums at the employment tribunal. Even in normal times, you are entitled to sick leave. But thanks for you explanation.
