Amen to the prayers, but not free. Reason is people hardly take action from free stuffs, except one is doing charity. However, ask ANY QUESTION, I will give you answers here freely. And many other experts too are willing to do the same here.

Greetings,

I'm thinking of making a small catfish pond in my backyard just for family consumption.
Can someone please tell me what is the acceptable size of concrete pond that can safely hold 200 to 300 fishes.

PS: I'm a novice... I'm thinking of buying juvenile and harvest when they reach about 1kg or more.

Thanks in anticipation.

if its a permanent house then you can do concrete ponds you can as as well use a tampoline pond too but since its for family consumption i think you need a tampoline or mobile tank.
size could be hmmmm you can make use of two ponds 150 fish in one and 150 in another .....sizes varies

It's a permanent house, fenced with gate. The available space at the backyard is roughly 56ft by 25ft, so I'm thinking of making concrete ponds. So what do you think should be the dimensions of the pond? (Height x Width x Depth)

PS: I currently have some noilers free ranging in the backyard, so I don't want to make too big pond, so as to have enough space for the birds.
Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by waleyp(m): 1:54pm On May 09, 2020
It's OK you can go ahead with the pond, but you have to give it out to someone who knows how to build the concrete pond and mind you concrete ponds is costly

Good evening house.. I'm a newbie in the house though I ve been into fish farming for sometime now. Funny enough I came across this page just last week and as of today, I ve read through ALL the pages. Vast knowledge! kudus guys.

Please I ve some questions.

1. After spawning a female, how long before she can be used again?

2. Are there special tactics to turn a fully grown table size fish to a broodstock or one should just keep feeding till it ages and you notice an orange dot in the eggs?

3. After a successful Hatch, do you need any antibiotics or vitamins for the fries or you just keep feeding them and observing the regular water management?

4. What is the sequence of feed size fries should be feed prior to age/weeks.

5. When is the appropriate time (weeks) to move them outside the hatchery/vat.

Thank you, awaiting your responses.
1. Your fish will be ready for another use 2months after usage

2. Yes, broodstock should be treated specially with high protein feed, high water level and darker environment

3. You dont need antibiotic if your management is right. Meanwhile, you can use antistress such as salt during cleaning and when you transfer the fry

4. 0mm and 1mm as wean feed for 3 days, 0.2mm for 10days. If there's 0.3 use for 8days otherwise continue 0.2mm up to 18 days and use 0.5 for the remaining days of the month. Use 0.7mm, 1mm, 1.5mm at 1 week interval. Then followed by 2mm until you harvest for sale or stocking

5. That depends on your hatchery structure and management. I move when they are 1month old

Good morning house, I took supply of some fingerlings (2000) about 3 weeks ago and have lost about 50-60 of them. Sometimes for days no death if I don't feed them but immediately I feed them they will start dying the following day. I have changed water repeatedly, done flow through etc. Same result.
They are housed in a 16 feet by 14 feet tarpaulin pond filled to 2-3 feet level. Source of water borehole.

Recently I noticed white patches on their heads, though they remain quite active and not hanging.

I have been rearing fish in that pond on and off now for 3 years with good results at the onset. Similar thing happened with the last batch of fish I got last year and I lost close to 300 pieces before they stopped dying.
Before restocking, I allowed the pond to be empty for a month then washed with salt. Rinse out thoroughly before filling up. Used some fish feeds to encourage small algae and insect growth before putting the fish.

Please help because I am now confused. Water PH is 7.5.

Good evening great minds. I've been reading this post from page one to the final page. This is more than a textbook. This is an encyclopedia or Wikipedia of fish farming.

Thanks to sir Robonski and all the great minds that contributed and are still contributing to this great topic.

As a serving corps member in Abuja, your contributions encouraged me to start up a little fish farm in my apartment. I started with just 250 juveniles and have plans to expand when I'm done with Service.

Please my question is, do we have steady buyers of catfish in Abuja and what's their average price per kilo?

first of all when you collected the fish, did u feed them immediately? If yes you made a mistake cause they just underwent stress and should have been left alone to get use to the new environment (new water) which is also another stress on it on. So best thing u could have done was left them for at least 30mins before feeding them a little (depending on how they respond) another thing was that you should have administered anti stress in their water. Now, the problem is u might have been overfeeding them thereby the water is getting polluted making them have that white patch and getting sick. They will keep dying in hundreds, infact that white patch indicate that they are sick. So what u should do is go to ur local store where you get catfish feed and drugs and ask for it or fratadol. When you get it, I don't know how big the pond u kept them is. But if it is a plastic tank, drain the pond, flush thoroughly let the water in the pond be clean, pump the water to a quarter of the pond(basically just let the water volume in the pond be low not too extremely low tho), put 2table spoon of otc in a bowl, mix with water and pour it in the pond. Let the fish swim in the treated water for like 30-40 mins then pump the water to half of ur pond and feed them little (don't overfeed) 24hrs later, drain the water completely and repeat the process. You should be fine by then.

Any fish farmer in Anambra state here?

Please I will also like to know if there are good buyers of catfish in Anambra, Ihiala LGA to be precise and the average price per KG.

With my NYSC program coming to an end soon I believe it's time I started implementing my plans.

A swift response will be highly appreciated.

Thank you NL
