Didier Drogba has fended off competition from Zlatan Ibrahimovic to be crowned the best Ligue 1 striker in the past 20 years

The vote was held on Ligue 1's official Twitter account, with Drogba receiving 51 per cent of the 40,094 votes that were cast.

Drogba played in Ligue 1 for three seasons, representing Guingamp between 2001 and 2003 before spending the 2003-2004 campaign with Marseille.

The 42-year-old was delighted to receive the honour and tweeted: 'Wow what recognition from the fans, thank you for allowing me to experience these incredible emotions.

'Great respect to all strikers who have played in the French championship.'

Drogba scored 39 goals in 80 Ligue 1 appearances but it was in the Premier League with Chelsea where he enjoyed the most success.

Ibrahimovic, meanwhile, played for Paris Saint-Germain between 2012 and 2016 and boasts an impressive record of 113 goals in 122 Ligue 1 appearances.

The Swedish striker won the league title four times in France, with Drogba not winning it at all.

In order to reach the final stage of the vote Ibrahimovic got the better of Mario Balotelli, Alexandre Lacazette, Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani.

Drogba, meanwhile, was selected ahead of Fernando Morientes, Alexander Frei, Karim Benzema and Pauleta.

I think Drogba’s subsequent performance outside Ligue 1 influenced the voting.

He wasn’t very prolific in Ligue 1. At least he didn’t score as much as Ibra. But maybe because he carried Marseille to the final of UEFA (predecessor to Europa).

One of the striker I pray Real Madrid signed then before he retired, very sharp in front of goal, has a very dubious way of deceiving everybody on the field

When you see him holding waist frowning his face as if he's tired, please mark him well, that's when he will score you, even if he's sick, Mourinho still prefer to use him.

On Ibrahimovic, believe me I dream of this guy too for Madrid to get him on free transfer when he was leaving Manchecter United for MLS, the guy nah strong guy, he can intimidate defenders, he can also score from anywhere and anyhow.

He was just not lucky enough to enjoy individual awards like world best player, his right or left hand can throwaway 10 defenders because of his power and strength.

In all, both are good strikers that evey team and coaches woukf love to have at their disposal

How come? Drogba scored 30 out of 83 league appearances. Ibrahimovic scored 112 out of 121 league appearances! That's not fair.
