There is a leak and a leak doesn't hide.

Also find out if you bought the car with the low PS fluid or if it keeps going down.

Lastly, for your pump's sake, gauge the oil before it starts to whine.

Please what happens next after it starts to whine? Mine had a leak which I’ve fixed but it’s already begun having that noise while turning the steering

The whine is easy to diagnose.

If it whines only ion cold start and disappear; it is definitely a suction leak.

If it starts winning 5-10 mins after starting; low viscosity or non Honda PS fluid.

Others can be a PS pump failed oil seal.

Any issue with the ball joint of your CRV and I need an honest review on the car. I'm considering the 2003-2005 model.

The real problem is incompetent mechanics substituteing manufacturer recommended fluids and practices

Manufacturer says dot 4 they put dot 3
Manufacturer says Honda transmission fluid only, they put generic dexron 2
Put radiator coolant, they put water

Then when car parts start to fail, they say car has a problem.
water is recommended for every vehicle all-over the world, it is now left for you to decide whether to use coloured chemicals as coolant or not.

Is it the only car that has rough user(s) or is it the only brand of car on the same bad road....?

Its not Nigerian road it’s the car, most times they don’t use Car more than 10 years in developed worlds so it’s difficult to know it’s durability
Come to think of it,why always HONDA? And that ball joint is only one of the problems,it has several problems not mentioned in this post
Electrical problem, brain box and so on

It is a huge lie. Honda has no electrical problem. The only problem with honda is ball joint , and it is because of our roadless country. Honda has one of the best electrical and electronics durability. I still drive my 2005 honda bought over four years ago, no single electrical issue since purchase. Another issue is the location of the gear oil filter Which warrants dropping the gear box to have it cleaned. However, gear flush has provided solution for this.
Even the ball joint issue is mostly caused by buying fake parts and drivers not paying attention to thier car. I've only experienced ball joint pulling once in my four years of driving EOD

Never put bare water into your radiator.it will corrode your radiator. plus bare water has a lower broiling point than most coolant.

Hello Sir,

I have been using my 2002 babyboy V6 for six years now. The car has served me beyond my expectations. Very reliable.

The only recurring problem is whining power steering. My mechanic has worked on it and doesnt seem to get the issue.
Last month, I went to another mechanic who bled the system and the noise stopped completely for 5 days, only to resume again while driving.

I am using John Holt ATF. Are you saying the Honda Genuine will solve the issue permanently if I do a complete flush?

It's going to cost me 19k so I wanna be sure. Thanks and sorry for my long story.

It's going to cost me 19k so I wanna be sure. Thanks and sorry for my long story.

First, Honda PSF is 354ml and the whole system should not require more than 1litre. That means 3 bottles should do for a flush and maybe 4 if its an overhaul. I am not aware of the current price but 6k per bottle is rather steep.

Let me explain my findings even though i couldn't get the tech sheets of Honda PSF, what i got was an aftermarket replacement tech sheet.

PSF
Kinematic viscosity at 100°c - 11.7 mm²/s
Kinematic viscosity at 40°c - 72mm²/s
Density at 15°c - 0.871kg/L

Dexron III ATF
Kinematic viscosity at 100°c - 8.5mm²/s
Kinematic viscosity at 40°c - 33.5mm²/s
Density at 15°c - 0.814kg/L

Total Quartz 5000 20w50 engine oil
Kinematic viscosity at 100°c - 17.85mm²/s
Kinematic viscosity at 40°c - 156.8mm²/s
Density at 15°c - 0.883kg/L

Mobil 1 5w30 engine oil
Kinematic viscosity at 100°c - 11mm²/s
Kinematic viscosity at 40°c - 61.7mm²/s
Density at 15°c - 0.855kg/L

Total Quartz 7000 10w40 engine oil
Kinematic viscosity at 100°c - 14.81mm²/s
Kinematic viscosity at 40°c - 96.8mm²/s
Density at 15°c - 0.874kg/L

This means that 20w50 engine oil is highest viscosity and ATF has lowest viscosity.

The main thing here is that if an optimum viscosity is specified, you can only treat that as minimum. Going higher or lower will give you bad results but which among the two bad result is a lesser evil.

A lower viscosity will cause the oil to heat. Secondly, you will notice the PS oil in the reservoir whirling with a possible hole at the center due to the suction of the PS pump. This would cause a little suction of air and then the oil starts foaming. The air causes the vanes in the pump to vibrate leading to the whining sound. At this point the pump itself is very hot. Its just a matter of time then the pump overheats and stop or the pump vanes get bad.

On the other hand, a higher viscosity oil will not whirl and prevent air from being sucked by the pump. It will not heat neither. The side effect will only be that the level of efficiency of the pump will reduce. It will not pump the oil at the standard pressure required so your steering will not be at its best.

In summary, ATF is not suitable as power steering fluid, Engine oil will be better. such as Total 5w30 or 10w40 which has a closer viscosity to PSF. 5w20 will be worst than ATF.

Thanks a millon for the analysis. I am planning to buy 4 bottles online at 4,500 per one, plus shipping cost of 1k. I really wanna find a permanent solution to the annoying noise.

Your opinion, when people talk about reliability of Toyota, its mostly the old models, pencil light and 05 corolla, newer models suck.

Stumbled on this analysis. Please are you saying engine oil can be used for power steering?

I ask because I have a situation where I use DexIII ATF for my power steering and it's very inconsistent. Randomly goes soft and stiff (ish)

Once thought it was failing pump and rack and I've changed both but the symptoms persist.

It was also confirmed that those components were still ok when I changed them.

Upon further thought it does seem like the oil does this, and my pump is quite audible when turning the wheel when stationary

NB: Not Honda

I can't reàlly say with my experience.

The only thing I can say for sure is that Power steering fluid is not the same thing as Automatic transmission fluid,

A google search provides more insight

Una go just de make me fear Honda. And they got one of the best interior designs but the complains here and there is scary..

Funny , I usually only sell Toyota brands but I can’t use any of their brands personally . I’ve always driven Honda all my life as my personal vehicle Nd they never disappoint me for a day , though , I’ve had the ball joint got pulled out once . I heard the squeaky noise before it happened but I ignorantly ignored . After that , I always pay attention to such noises . It’s got the best AC , flight movement , cost less to maintain compared to other brands , best interior ever aside Benz and some Luxurious brands . Just Sold one I drove for 5 years and the buyer is already praying for me everytime coz he’s just purchased peace of mind ...

The gear box filter is located by the side of the air intake filter housing. You don’t need to drop the gear box to change that. I having been changing mine since I bought the car in 2009.
