I've this type of UPS too,pls how can I work it as inverter...maybe for standing fan only.
I will appreciate your reply

You think so? Well I would have said the same few weeks ago until I saw my inverter pulling a loss of over 100w and another inverter pulling just above 20w under the same load condition so yes 0.8 can't be applied to all set-up but it's not necessarily "too high" a figure for planning.

How did you get to calculate the losses by these different inverters and is there any inverter you can recommend that has minimal losses?

I use a BMV but you can also use a clamp meter to get a rough idea, the goal is to check the power at the battery side. @Juo has some high efficiency inverters if you have the budget to expend

That's true, never thought of it. However, using clamp meter, do you measure at full load or no load.

At no load you will see the actual idle consumption of the inverter. At any load you will see the loss/consumption of the inverter which determines the efficiency level. For instance my inverter consumes 50w on idle, but it was over 100w when I added load of about 650w

Thanks. Clamp meter measures current. You will have to multiply by the voltage?

Sir, let me start with the fact that I am not a professional installer ot technician but I have had some experience with inverter use. At present, I have a total of Nine (9) inverters ranging from 800va 12v to 6kw 24v. Of those eight (cool have inbuilt chargers, while 2 of them are Hybrid inverters in that they also have solar charging capability apart from charging through Nepa or Generator. I also have 4 external chargers deployed when I feel I need additional speed in recharging my batteries after use.
One important thing to note is that some chargers (whether inbuilt or external) are BULK chargers and do not optimally charge a lead acid batteries we commonly use. A good charger (whether external or internal) must be appropriatly sized/ big enough for the system and able to replace the power drawn from the battery as soon as possible without overcharging the battery or destroying it. It must also take the battery through at least 3 phases--bulk, absorb and float. A fourth phase may be required intermittently by some batteries called equalization phase. These type of chargers are called "intelligent" chargers and are the best type, and remember, it could be internal or external.
Sometimes to cut costs, some inverters come without a charger or a low grade one, causing issues with time for the attached batteries.

Timileyin1234:

Wetin we talk reach there be say, he say inverter dey charge battery. I com say if u don’t have external charger inverter cannot charge the battery else maybe u are using solar with it.
He com upload him own inverter and it has charger, I had to accept say inverter dey charge battery cos me I never see inverter whey charge battery without external charger.
As I com see ur own external charger now, e mean say wetin I know b4 no b fluke. That is my external charger

Those external Bulk chargers are referred to "Dumb Chargers". They work on a simple AC - DC principle consisting of a Transformer and Diode and are advised to only be used to revive a dead battery.

Inbuilt chargers of a quality brand inverter should be different and work intelligently unlike the previous one up there. There are also intelligent "3 step" standalone chargers

Bit wait ooo, only you 9 inverters, you mean you sell them?
Re: Inverter Users : Lets Have Your Experience by durodee(m): 2:16pm On May 09, 2020
No I don't sell. I use it for business and domestically spread over different facilities. I also started low and went up the size ladder as my need increased. I however kept all, making use of them as I see fit. I do most installations myself, including solar panel installations, as a form of relaxation. I should not mention the number and total capacity of Ccs that I have or the number of panels or batteries.! grin!!!
Without alternative energy, my business would have suffered terribly. Imagine 2 years without national grid power and you need power 24/7? I went the route of using generators before sense found me.

Oh, good to know. I also do my Inverter and Solar installations myself. I have an Offgrid system in my small office but non-solar in my home. I build my own DIY 18650 Lithium batteries and it's been fun since I started mid 2018.

Romoss is good if you order the original one but Anker is better.

I'll appreaciate inputs based on the wealth of experience from members on this thread.

I Installed a 2kva inverter with 2 x 200amp batteries last August but its rarely used because my neighborhood is on 33kva line. But whenever we use it, it can last up to 36hrs on few light bulbs, 1 ceiling fan through the night and TV in my flat. My only concern is that whenever the battery gets low or depleted, it might take up to 16hrs or more to get it charged back up. Also whenever it is put on generator to recharge the battery, error is mostly dispayed with a long beep sound. I called the guy who installed it who mentioned smtn about the generator but when I checked, the input from the generator was more than 200v and it carries every other appliance in the house except the inverter. I have a4.5kva generator. What could likely be the cause of the error showing whenever it is on generator and is it ok for the batteries to take that long to recharge after it is depleted.

Thanks

Is the inverter 12 or 24v?
This info means a lot to get a support from this room.

The frequency (50 or 60Hz) mismatch between Gen and inverter is the commonest wahala

Not sure at the moment. Currently not at home. Can you provide possible solution based on whether it is 12v/24v. Thanks

A clamp meter would v determined the charging current possibly to check if it is enough to charge up the battery.

Check if there is a possible partial contact between cables and batteries' terminals

A voltmeter is also needed to check if it reads above 13v ( charging) or above 24v (charging) and below these mean not charging.
