Please, moderators and fellow nairalanders, do not take the post about Ogbunike bat cave lightly. Bats carry two deadly viruses; Ebola and Marburg viruses.

The Ogbunike bat cave thread made the front page https://www.nairaland.com/5818875/how-survived-ogbunike-cave-colony#88890439

I think we all know about the Ebola virus and how deadly it is. The Marburg virus is similar and it kills the same way. You will vomit blood from all orifices in your body.

The Marburg virus is present in the bat's urine, saliva and feces.

Please, Moderators should remove that thread from the front page. We are already dealing with the coronavirus. We do not need another outbreak of another virus. Entering bat caves is dangerous!!

Here is further reading on the marburg viurus from bats

The major carriers of the Marburg virus are the Egyptian Rousette fruit bats.

Filoviridae is a family of virus containing two genera associated with bats: Marburgvirus and Ebolavirus, which contain the species that cause Marburg virus disease and Ebola virus disease, respectively.
I believe ignorance has a part to play, in the case of people still visiting these caves.
Any contact with the fluids of an infected fruit bat would be dangerous.

Fruit bats remind me of those mouse in Basil of Baker Street. Ratigan's Major Domo henchman was a peg-legged bat

First, we have to try to confirm the specie of the bat;
It is most likely the Egyptian Rousette specie aka Egyptian fruit bat aka megabat. The main class is megabat. They are the largest bat specie.
Many of their lineages probably originated in Melanesia, then dispersed over time to mainland Asia, the Mediterranean, and Africa. Today, they are found in tropical and subtropical areas of Eurasia, Africa, and Oceania.
Megabats are the reservoirs of several viruses that can affect humans and cause disease. They can carry filoviruses, including the Ebola virus (EBOV) and Marburgvirus. The presence of Marburgvirus, which causes Marburg virus disease, has been confirmed in one species, the Egyptian fruit bat.
Most megabats are nocturnal or crepuscular, although a few species are active during the daytime. During the period of inactivity, they roost in trees or caves.
Below is an image showing the locations of the Egyptian fruit bat in Africa. You can see where Nigeria lies.

Can you imagine? We actually have the very species that carry the virus!

One lucky thing is that most Nigerians dont eat bats. Some African countries do

So, I re-visited the thread and I came across some comments. It's good some people are aware of the disease-carrying potential of these bats.
User 1:
una carry una girl friends go visit bats....kudos. If dem sick 2morrow their families will shout rituals
User 2:
@op. Make sure you go to a nearby hospital to begin your rabies vaccine shots. If they ask why, tell them that you were exposed to bats in the cave. A word is enough for the wise
User 3:
Entering bat caves in this COVID-19 season? Una no know say na from bats
the disease from come? shocked

Lol, this was the reply to User 3. Smh
User 4:
Direct bat to human transmission without any laboratory engineering? Tell that to the marines!

Yes, but contact with the fluids of an infected one is still enough to start an endemic.
The cave is not a problem, but these bats reside there.
I don't see a valid reason to catch a deadly disease with a high mortality rate, for a few moments of thrills.

No problem.

My issue now is raising awareness. I quoted all the mods and the owner of the site but nothing was done. They didnt take down the bat cave thread from the front page.

Ishilove who has some access to the mods, ignored this thread at first. Only to come and derail when she found you bumping this thread.

Nairaland and Nigerians can be frustrating at times.

I get you. You aren't the only one.

Many minds have kept mute, many have left. I know a few still lingering around tho. But they hardly speak.
It's a lost cause.
Se.un himself has discovered it's a lost cause. One of the reasons, he doesn't reply numerous mentions, aside the obvious.

Trying to educate Nigerians nowadays, only attract insults and additional display of more ignorance, which are usually accompanied by likes and shares, or another show of support.
A case of conformity to ignorance.
I said it before, I've stopped trying.

I only do what I can.

Rereading this thread.

I weep for Nigerians. The average Nigerian is quite uncultured.

Of course. She is an uncultured market woman.

Just imagine. Someone was raising awareness of the potential dangers of viruses in the tourist bat cave, and she just came to troll.
