The individual with his diabetes and high blood pressure would probably have been managed till even old age but the virus compounded the whole issue. It's similar with HIV, we hear sometimes that an individual dies of HIV, whereas the HIV virus only makes the human system weakened and unable to fight even cattarh or a mild fever. In this case, we do not say the person died of fever or cattarh, but HIV, which gave these "opportunitic infections" ability to cause more harm.
