Blue3k:See you, so NASU is now ASUU? Nonacademic staff are different from academic staff. |

emror4u:The same thing happened to me in my second year. One of our lecturers only showed up once our twice during the semester and we were made to write her paper against our complaints. And of course, some people had to "sort" their way to the next level through her agents |

Slawormir:You said with time it will be resolved. Are you in ippis department? Different salaries are paid to staff on the same rank and level. Can you explain? I know a staff who was paid 134k in Feb.,125k in March and 98k in April. |

I have given up on the guy already. It is impossible to have a rational discussion with some fellow citizens. No amount of reasoning seems sufficient to eradicate the prejudice, envy and anger in their mind. I am increasingly believing these days that the attacks many e-Nigerians are willing to mete out on any category of labour union might be erupting from envy, that you have guys have jobs and you are still going on strike. Be it lecturers, doctors, etc, some Nigerians keep the same old song of sack-and-replace-them-all. Sack and replace who exactly? Lecturing job is one of the most specialized fields I have ever seen. In some cases, only one or few departments can boast of specific expertise in the country. And whenever you lose such individuals to other countries, that is often the end of that field in Nigeria. In fact in lecturing, you can not readily replace one professor with another. The level of ignorance and mis-education in Nigeria baffles me. It is like many of my fellow citizens don't even care a hoot to inform their own native ignorance and biases. Many keep thinking that lecturing is all about delivering lectures in classrooms and that on that basis alone you should measure the competence and replacability of our university academic staff. No. Lecturing constitutes less than half of the academic duties and responsibilities of a lecturer. This fact seems lost on most Nigerians. The larger part of the calling of a university academic staff is to engage in research to increase human knowledge...this is the primary duty. And it is in the fulfilling of this primary duty that a lecturer is meant to train the country's workforce. In most developed countries on Earth today, possession of a PhD is no longer the minimum requirement to be employed as a faculty member. You must have engaged in postdoctoral research for years, sometimes up to 10 years before you secure a lecturing job. It now beats my imagination that some Nigerians would even think such highly trained experts can be simply replaced by job-seeking individuals who are still learning how to compose a CV. Thanks my brother for your kind comments. I read the last response of that my fellow Nigerian, and it occurred to me that explanations have all along been wasted on someone that might not be interested in examining facts. zikter: |

[s][/s] bizme:did I hear highly trained.....please none of the professors in the courses I've taken are highly trained.....they can impact a single knowledge..... But you see those small small master degrees boys and girls......they are the ones that made me still wanna finish school....if I'm a president for a day.....the first thing I will do is to sack all the professors..... That have always been my wish since I entered school |
| Re: NASU Directs University Workers, Others To Begin Strike Over IPPIS by Nobody: 5:36pm On May 20, 2020 |
Most of those small small master degrees boys and girls were trained by the same professors you so readily dismissed. The funny thing is that, a time will come when a new generation of students will consider the same small small masters degrees boys and girls, now professors, not good enough. As a student you are really not sufficiently competent to grade the competence of your professors. (Please take that as a general statement: I agree that we have many severe departures from this rule of thumb.) That said, the situation in Nigeria is NOT ideal to bring the best of any lecturer. Those who have recently joined the university system will still have the vision, the passion, the energy, and the patriotism to give their best to this country. But give them time, and life will start re-educating them. For instance, many of those small small master degrees boys and girls whose salaries have now been severely mutilated (by the same paymaster President you referred to) will return to work at then end of this pause with a little less zeal. Then later when then have to use their own small salaries to conduct research, to buy equipment and consumables to discharge the same duties brought on them by the country, and to publish papers that should increase the rating of their universities... when they have to do such over and over again for years, they will start re-evaluating their energy towards the job. Many of them will exit the country and will never return, and those that remain will look with a knowing smile at the younger lecturers running around with so much zeal... Yes, those same professors are highly trained. That is a fact. And that is why they are the same who decide whether or not the small small master degrees boys and girls deserve those same master degrees in the first place. And if you really want to understand the depth of training of any professor, you should attend a PhD review, a research seminar, or a conference. The undergraduate education is not you use to know the true measure of a professor, like I pointed out elsewhere. It is in research. This too is a general statement and there are exceptions. Okay, I must admit you cracked me up with your choice of words ... small small master degrees boys and girls. ![]() makanma: |

Government should privatize most schools this holding of government on the balls would reduce or sack them and employ from the pull of unemployed lecturers out there. Some of these lecturers lecture in 6 schools at the same time. sinkhole: |

bizme:I fully understand you. That is the level of ignorance we have among our youths here. Supposed leaders of tomorrow. Given an opportunity, that is how this kind of person will crumble the whole sectors of the economy with this singular decision. Sometimes I weep for our educational sector, the way the government is neglecting it, the standard is becoming worse everyday while politicians keep fleecing away scarce resources. |

emror4u:Who nor go nor know. You will surely not understand that the lecturers that teaches everyone his or her profession is grossly underpaid, the same as all university staff. The best incentive you can give to a staff is pay him or her well and as at when due. Before ippis, I know people earning more than 130k as salary, that was January. Then ippis came, their salaries was reduced to 80k plus for February, 70k plus for March and less than 30k for April without any reason. Minimum wage arrears have been paid to other MDAs since December and tertiary institutions haven't received theirs till today. There are lots and lots of issues as this. Let the government treat her workers well and see if they will not be very productive. Instead, they pocket all the money meant for workers. Tertiary institutions have been paying tax before but on basic salary but now it is been deducted on consolidated salary without any explanation. Oga if na you, Shey you go happy go work abi |

osazsky:What the man posted is true. IPPIS made a mess of salaries of FTI staff (you should know this if you are TRULY a university staff as you claimed). Which true staff of a federal tertiary institution would call for outright privatization of schools if not enemies of Nigerian youth? If I may ask, what exactly are misfits like you doing in a university? |
| Re: NASU Directs University Workers, Others To Begin Strike Over IPPIS by sanchemie(m): 10:57pm On May 20, 2020 |
osazsky:Privatization will solve the problem of having people like you on full-time employment in any university. You will simply become a "contract" or "casual" staff in a privatized educational institution (where your new masters will pay you peanuts and you dare not complain)..... ....I really pray that your place of work is sold to the Chinese or Lebanese....... |
