Indeed all these lectures are easily replaceable. Buhari is a weak leader which is why he's being pushed around even though he has the leverage. The tens of thousands of unemployed master degree holders that can easily replace them. All Buhari has to is give them an ultimatum comply or be fired and banned from civil service.

A greater %age of everyone is just greedy and selfish in this country, I've taken my time to study that IPPIS brouhaha, to me, there is nothing different there with people working in corporate organisations, basically you have to pay your tax, pension, nhf and most importantly, earn from one source in the organisation (you can't have dual pay slips from the same company). This is just what they are fighting for. Earn multiple salaries, short-change the government on tax etc.
They don't just want to consider the plights of the students, just their greedy selfish evil agenda alone

BS: in my final year, I had a lecturer that was supposed to take a course, I just saw that man once, only once in a whole year. He had several offices in several universities, earnings salaries there. He enjoyed, while I (the student suffered)

These people are still contemplating more strike when school should be resuming? That means we are dead. We have already died and we'll be more dead if lockdown is not lifted completely and campuses reopened for us to go back to our businesses.

I'm neither on government payroll nor company's own but survive by what I make via my campus business. Today, campuses are shutdown. In other words, I have no source of livelihood again. I never had expected this thing to last this long. Please help a brother in serious need. God bless you all.

Thanks for taking time to talk to that guy. We had a running conversation on the sack topic for two days. He thinks you can just wake up and erase a workforce, bring in new people and the system will be sustained. I asked him the distribution of the degrees he is talking about. He even said the president can hire from other countries and I laughed. Which lecturers will leave Ghana, South Africa etc to come and lecture in our system, at the minimum, you will pay them as expatriate, which will cost more. Talk is cheap anyway

You have omitted the details of those degrees. When you speak of the university system it is highly complex system and a job applicant having a masters degree doesn't automatically fit in anywhere. Take my field for example, it is impossible for you to have a bachelor degree in Pharmacy and not already be employed. With almost no more than 14,000 pharmacists who are Nigerians, a good number of us have left the country. And without a bachelor of pharmacy degree you cannot run a pharmacy programme in any of the universities. The very fact that University jobs pay pharmacists ridiculous salaries is exactly why my colleagues would not in a million years accept to lecture in a university. For instance, even after you have added an MSc and a PhD degree to your qualifications as Faculty of Pharmacy lecturer, most of the graduates produced by you with no more than a bachelors degree will take first salaries that are infinitely higher than yours, with all your additional degrees. If you see a Pharmacist who is lecturing it is purely the love for the job and a good sense of sacrifice that compels him to turn back on the juicer packages outside and pick up lecturing job.
You have to understand the system well to know that lecturers, e.g., those working at the Faculty of Pharmacy are simply irreplaceable. And this applies for all the fields. You can not bring an MBA masters degree to teach pharmacy, medical, law, engineering students and so on. You cannot use a PhD in Education to train students of geology, chemistry and so on ...

Don't always believe the propaganda by the government. The same government that said through Chris Ngige that medical personnel could leave the country for all he cared, that there were many doctors looking for employment, is now the same government that has been quickly increasing the allowances of health personnel to prevent any kind of unrest at this time. That you have MBBS wielding doctors outside doesn't mean you can replace highly trained surgeons and consultants with the job-seekers. It is the same way with you saying lecturers are replaceable.

I for one like to see what it looks like replacing highly trained and experienced lecturers up to professorial cadres with job seekers with or without postgraduate degrees. Won't that be a very memorable sight?

Once this COVID19 holiday is over, Nigerians should get ready for the total shutdown of our universities. For the first time in a long while, Buhari has succeeded in uniting all three University unions. ASUU, NASU, and SSANU.

In the end, the politicians with the private higher institutions are the ones who will benefit from all this, and Nigerians the ones to lose. All the university workers' entitlements will eventually be paid no matter what. But at the end, founders of private universities will keep smiling to the bank. This is how politicians play us and some naive Nigerians actually think this is a fight against corruption.

Government should privatize most schools this holding of government on the balls would reduce or sack them and employ from the pull of unemployed lecturers out there.Some of these lecturers lecture in 6 schools at the same time.

I have given up on the guy already. It is impossible to have a rational discussion with some fellow citizens. No amount of reasoning seems sufficient to eradicate the prejudice, envy and anger in their mind. I am increasingly believing these days that the attacks many e-Nigerians are willing to mete out on any category of labour union might be erupting from envy, that you have guys have jobs and you are still going on strike. Be it lecturers, doctors, etc, some Nigerians keep the same old song of sack-and-replace-them-all. Sack and replace who exactly?

Lecturing job is one of the most specialized fields I have ever seen. In some cases, only one or few departments can boast of specific expertise in the country. And whenever you lose such individuals to other countries, that is often the end of that field in Nigeria. In fact in lecturing, you can not readily replace one professor with another.

The level of ignorance and mis-education in Nigeria baffles me. It is like many of my fellow citizens don't even care a hoot to inform their own native ignorance and biases. Many keep thinking that lecturing is all about delivering lectures in classrooms and that on that basis alone you should measure the competence and replacability of our university academic staff. No. Lecturing constitutes less than half of the academic duties and responsibilities of a lecturer. This fact seems lost on most Nigerians. The larger part of the calling of a university academic staff is to engage in research to increase human knowledge...this is the primary duty. And it is in the fulfilling of this primary duty that a lecturer is meant to train the country's workforce. In most developed countries on Earth today, possession of a PhD is no longer the minimum requirement to be employed as a faculty member. You must have engaged in postdoctoral research for years, sometimes up to 10 years before you secure a lecturing job. It now beats my imagination that some Nigerians would even think such highly trained experts can be simply replaced by job-seeking individuals who are still learning how to compose a CV.

Thanks my brother for your kind comments. I read the last response of that my fellow Nigerian, and it occurred to me that explanations have all along been wasted on someone that might not be interested in examining facts.

Crazy country ..... NASU going on strike over IPPIS, Doctors in Lagos going on strike over police harrassment, Covid 19 patients running away from isolation centers, Covid 19 patients protesting over poor welfare in the northern part of the country, Buhari asking SGF to address the nation on extended lockdown, Wike destroying hotels in PHC over violations of lockdown, El rufai climbing trucks in Kaduna to see if people are hiding inside. The list is endless. I love this country.
