When I was little I was so in love with this book eh. My mum had a collection of books from her university then. The book was about a man that went to visit his father in the land of the dead, and back home there was a huge quarell between earth and the heavens, which made heaven not to give earth rain. Resulting in a serious famine.

Poverty is a bastard, people are seeking inspiration from fictional works, how low is your self esteem?

Hmmm.. The Palmwine Drinkard! grin

I'm typically not a reader of books, but the continuous laughter and fascination of my brother whilst reading this book got me extremely curious. I eventually had a go at it, and till date, it remains the most hilarious bizarre tale I've ever encountered in my life. I remember crying repeatedly out of laughter throughout the episode.

@Ishilove,

Nice one.

Can't remember The Palmwine Drunkard.

But 'The Complete Gentleman' is timeless.

According to folklore, the song 'Ori, Ori o! Olajumoke nlo....' is from that story.

Excellent relation to the SM plague.

I know it. A meaningful thread like this won't have up to 400 posts. The reading culture is on the decline. What we have now are boys and girls of no letter values. A thread about sex will generate traffic 20 times more than this. I thank Prof. Chukwu for introducing me to Tutuola.

I was going to post this in my diary but I changed my mind and decided to rave about it here instead. I am not going give any fancy review, neither will I read the criticism until I am done with the book.

Never mind that the prose is pedestrian and chaotic at first glance, this book is one of the finest piece of African storytelling I have I ever come across in all my years of reading.

So rave, I MUST. If your attention span is a tweet long, then this thread is NOT for you. grin

I haven't gotten to the middle though. Hehehehehe..... cheesy
Its been ages since I read this novel. I couldn't stop myself from smiling when I saw the title. Nice work! smiley

Wow! Thanks for this & your review is awesome. My first attempt at reading the book as a kid was a massive fail but picked it up from Dad's book rack again a few years later. This is truly refreshing.

Wow. Thanks for bringing back my childhood memories.

The story of the girl who was smitten by love at the sight of a very handsome man who ended up returning parts of his body to whom and where he borrowed them from was always a tale I enjoyed listening to as a little boy.

I feel nostalgic reading this again.

In the words of my main man Theodore Bagwell aka T_bag of Prison Break

" WE ARE CAPTIVES OF OUR OWN IDENTITIES, LIVING INĀ PRISONĀ OF OUR OWN CREATION."

Other words "Captivity of Negativity"

The sad truth is that even after reading all this write up, some people would still go back and keep living that fake life. They just can't help it.

They'd rather flaunt what they don't have and appear rich and admired.

That's why relationships and marriages are nothing to write home about anymore. Life don cast and na we cast am ourselves grin

Yeah, I know it is. We studied it in English literature and we were told, the entire book was directly translated from a Yoruba folklore, hence the odd way the English was constructed in the story.
You mean for Famished Road or Palmwine Drinkard?

Ishilove I didn't know your literature was this good. Totally amazing. Are you a literature major or you just love reading?
