I was going to post this in my diary but I changed my mind and decided to rave about it here instead. I am not going give any fancy review, neither will I read the criticism until I am done with the book.

Never mind that the prose is pedestrian and chaotic at first glance, this book is one of the finest piece of African storytelling I have I ever come across in all my years of reading.

So rave, I MUST. If your attention span is a tweet long, then this thread is NOT for you. grin

I haven't gotten to the middle though. Hehehehehe..... cheesy

I read this book when I was in primary five it is one of

@Ishilove,

Nice one.

Can't remember The Palmwine Drunkard.

But 'The Complete Gentleman' is timeless.

According to folklore, the song 'Ori, Ori o! Olajumoke nlo....' is from that story.

Excellent relation to the SM plague.
This is news to me! Are you serious?

One of the most weird and bizarre book I have read.
If you are not strong hearted, you won't go half of it.

I believe those who had the pleasure of watching TV during the eighties and nineties, will find this story similar to the ones told in Jimmy Solanke's Story Land and NTA'S Tales By Moonlight.

It takes a good sense of self worth for an individual not to fall victim to the nonsense we see in social media.

Palmwine Drinkard.
Oh really, the first time I read the book, I was like 'WTF just happened?' It was a compendium of many stories similar to what I've heard before. 'The Perfect Gentleman' is a story I heard as a kid. Never related it to society the way Ishilove has done.

My goodness! I remembered this book just three days ago. My dad bought it for me in primary 5/6 and I clearly remember thinking it was the weirdest book I had ever read, then. Sadly cannot find it anymore.

I love how you were able to relate the book to real life, present day issues.

The sad truth is that even after reading all this write up, some people would still go back and keep living that fake life. They just can't help it.

Life don cast and na we cast am ourselves grin

I believe they can with discipline and a re-focus on the essentials of life!!!

What is public adulation without a wholesome self esteem??.. Other than a journey in deceit with no goods at the finishing line!!

Use SM strategically and NOT be consumed by SM!

Of course they can with discipline and re-focus, but they don't want to. They enjoy the attention and fake love they get from the comment section.

I read this book in the university; very strange book it was to me but was fascinated with the use of imagery by the author.

It reminds me of those unpredictable days as an undergrad. wink

cry All these long epistles untop marriage..

for once lets be factual, marriage has no manual..so don't be hoodwinked by what people say or think about it.

"WETIN FAVOUR MR. A FIT FAIL WOEFULLY IN THE HANDS OF MR. B"

i just remembered about 5years ago..i was privileged to work with a pretty girl who happened to have various suitors..and dat became a serious problem to d extent that she started reading books upandan on marriage.

las las,she ended up marrying d bully among them all simply becux she was swayed away by d guy's money..

The palmwine drinkard is a very spooky book however I have never related it to social media the way Ishi did. When Ishi made a comment earlier this week about taking a break from social media I knew she saw something that really touched her.

You see this thing they call social media one has to be very careful how it influences our life.Lets not go too far it is in this same nairaland that monikers will wake up with their empty stomach and promise fellow human beings 10k giveaway only for account numbers to flood pages on a hopeless quest.

It is in this same nairaland people steal pictures from the internet and claim the pictures are theirs just to lure people to empty validation.

I know it. A meaningful thread like this won't have up to 400 posts. The reading culture is on the decline. What we have now are boys and girls of no letter values. A thread about sex will generate traffic 20 times more than this. I thank Prof. Chukwu for introducing me to Tutuola.

Which school, pls?
