Note: Pictures of names mentioned here are in the video, so watch the video if you want to see their faces. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgqzcABsnVQ There is an increasing global incidence of malware attacks, cyber espionage and an undermining treat to the privacy of information replete in the cyberspace. At the forefront of these malicious attacks are those we have known to call 'Hackers' who either act individually or as an organized group of individuals. Hackers have been known to cause untold mayhem or damages to websites or digital devices connected on way or the other to the internet. They often succeed in stealing sensitive private information like people bank details, pin numbers etc and breaking into almost everything from your G-mail account, phone camera, election results etc. They have been known to even shut down websites or an internet service. There are broadly two groups or types of hackers based on the intents of their hacking activities. Those who use their hacking know-how for ethical purposes like testing and strengthening the security of a website or computer system. They are usually known as the 'White Hat' hackers. While the more opposite group of hackers which we shall consider in this article as they are the focus of world concern, they are called the 'Black Hat' hackers, who use their skills for dubious activities, to steal sensitive data from government or private establishments and are well known to undertake illegal activities online. They are the so called 'dangerous' world hackers. Below is a list of 10 most dangerous world hackers, who distinguished themselves from the rest by applying their hacking skills in the most surprisingly extreme ways. 1. Jonathan James (aka COMRADE) At the age of 15, the child prodigy Jonathan James hacked into basically everything from the Florida based Miami-Dade school’s system to the US defense threat reduction agency, an agency saddled with the responsibility to monitor and analyze treats to the US. He found out a way to hack into NASA's systems, where he obtained the source code for the International Space Station (ISS), giving him access to the software responsible for controlling the physical environment of the ISS. As a result NASA was forced to shut down their systems for 3 weeks which cost them about $41,000 in damages. The total cost in loss for the software tampered by him was about $1.7 million. This national security breech wasn't taken lightly and in 2000 James was arrested and convicted on two counts of juvenile delinquency. He was sentenced to six months house arrest probation until he was the age of 18, and a written letter of apology to NASA. The US government monitored him from then on, and in 2008 James house was raided for a suspected involvement in a series of credit card hacks. With the possibility of going to jail for a crime he claimed he did not commit, James decided to take his own life by a single bullet to the head. It was later discovered that the credit card hacks were conducted by another crazy hacker Albert Gonzalez. 2. Albert Gonzalez The man Albert Gonzalez started out on the good side of the law but later went rogue as is accused of masterminding the greatest credit card theft in the history of the world. He hacked and re-sold more that 170 million card and ATM numbers from 2005 to 2007. In 2003, the computer hacker was an administrator for the website, shadowcrew.com which held auctions for stolen card information, before he was arrested by the secret service. On his arrest, he began co-operating with the authorities and thanks to his information, they put away nearly thirty of his fellow hackers. But despite his co-operation with the secret service, he was conducting a group hacking operation that stole approximately 175 million credit cards. He was caught the second time and sentenced to 20 years in prison. 3. Kevin Mitnick (aka The Condor Kevin Mitnick, alias the Condor, is known as one of the most wanted hackers in the history of the United States, this is according to the US department of Justice. By the early age of 13, Kevin had started by cheating the Los Angeles automated bus systems punch code free transportation, he hacked into the digital equipment corporation and copied their software, a crime he was later convicted for. He progressed to more daring feats by hacking into several top organizations such as IBM, Nokia & Motorola, where he would copy value proprietary software, also accessing mail accounts of customers. He was finally arrested in 1995 and pleaded guilty to wire and computer frauds. He was sentenced to five years in prison and was released in 2000. He has long reinvented himself into a white hat hacker who helps companies solve their security issues. 4. Gary McKinnon (aka Solo) Gary McKinnon was a notorious hacker, who worked by day as a systems manager but by night fall he wears his Black Hat to unleash havoc especially on US governmental agencies. His notoriety precedes him as he was accused of hacking 97 NASA computers in the early 2000’s. He would allegedly delete sensitive data, files and folders in the computers belonging to NASA. He was accused of causing almost $700,000 worth of damages. He often sent messages on the NASA computers he hacked saying, “Your security systems is crap, I am Solo, I will continue to disrupt at the highest levels. He was later discovered and indicted by the US grand jury but was never extradited to the US but released by the British government. He released a lot of his hacked data to the public. 5. Jan Krissner (aka Starbug) Jan Krissner who is a German hacker that specializes in biometrics security has his claim to fame as the first finger print hacker. In 2014, he hacked the finger print of Germans minister of Defense, Ms Ursula Vonder, by obtaining high resolution images of her palms from Google. Through image tweaking, he was able to recreate her finger prints and displayed the process at the chaos computer communications conference. In 2013, when he new Apple iPhone 5s was released, he defeated the apple thumbprint verification systems within 24 hours of its release. 6. Yu Pingan The history of hacking in the world cannot be complete with a mention of one of the most massive attack of US data on US soil. This hacking is popularly known as the Office of Personnel Management hack or OPM for short. The perpetrators of this hack had illegal access to every single person or consultants that has ever worked for the United States government for the last 50 years. The hack was discovered in 2015 and proved to have provided the hackers with Information on all secret government employees in the FBI, CIA or undercover agents. In 2017, a 36 year old Chinese national named Yu Pingan was arrested in connection to this crime and charged with the computer fraud & abuse act and conspiracy to defraud the United States. He was accused by the United States for working with the Chinese communist party, and so his crime was considered an act of espionage and national sabotage. 7. Michael Calce (aka Mafia boy) Michael first developed a fascinating interest about computers from the early age of 6, and by that age, his first attempt to hack into system networks began. Young Michael had been offered a 30 days free trial access to the AOL site, but that wasn’t enough as he hacked into their networks to maintain free access beyond the time of access. By the time he was 15 years of age, Michael had succeeded in pulling an unprecedented hacking spree that new cyber laws had to be drawn up because of the direct effect of his actions. The teenager got himself into online hacking groups and by 2000 began the hacking attacks that made him famous. He started by taking over a number of university networks simultaneously, creating a situation where all networks responded at the same time resulting in it been overwhelmed. Within hours, and using the same methods he targeted the networks of Yahoo, Amazon, CNN, Dell, E-Trade and eBay. All these sites were paralyzed by Michael’s actions. The FBI later arrested him and by 2001 he was sentenced to 8 month in youth custody. Today he works as a White Hat hacker and writer whose specialty remains topics on hacking. 8. Mathew Bevan (aka Kuji) and Richard Pryce. Bevan, a Welsh hacker in 1996 at age 21 years was arrested after hacking into the US government networks initially the Air force base research laboratory and later into NASA and NATO. He claimed to be researching the UFO conspiracy theory. With the aid of a commodore amiga computer alongside a program called RocksBox that simulates tones sent out by telephone operators dialing consoles. Bevan as well as his accomplice, Richard Pryce hacked into the Korean atomic research institute, stealing very sensitive documents and transferring them to the US air force systems which might have provoked tensions between the two unfriendly countries. The severity of his espionage later deescalated when it was discovered that the stolen data belonged to the South, not the North Korea. Bevan was arrested for this but later pardoned with a fine by the British crown prosecution and Pryce was released as no evidence indicted him. Bevan currently runs his own computer website. 9. Hamza Bendelladj (aka BX1) Hamza Benda is a 27 year old an Algerian computer science graduate and a known hacker. This hacker is well known as the 'Robin-Hood' because it was alleged that he would steal money from the rich only to donate most of it to charities in Pakistan and Africa. He hacked over 217 banks accounts and infiltrated about 60 million personal computers across the world (especially in the United States) with a Trojan virus named 'SpyEyeBotnet' that he co-created, which specialized in stealing personal financial information of its victims. After about three years of hiding, he was finally arrested on January 2013 in Thailand by the Thai police as he was on the top ten most wanted men on the Interpol criminal list. The events leading to his arrest made him famously called the 'Smiling Hacker’s as he was smiling the whole time of his arrest. He was extradited to the United States for trial in May 2013 and pleaded guilty to his charges in June 2015. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison with 3 years parole. 10. Astra (Real name is Unknown) In 2008 when the world was drowning in economic depression, an unidentified 58 years old Greek mathematician by the alias 'Astra' took the world by surprise. He was arrested that year in Athens under suspicion of masterminding one of the most potentially damaging hacks ever recorded. The hacker, under the name Astra, allegedly hacked into the French military contractor Dassault. He spent nearly five years stealing sensitive weapon technology/design information and would sell this information to anyone across the world who could pay. According to Greek officials, Astra caused more than 360 million dollars in damages to Dassault. But, the most concerned fears was that he would sell information containing intelligence on military jets used by India, Egypt and France for as low as 1000 dollars a pop. Astra never became officially identified, but security analyst says that the culprit was an insider in the company Dassault who gained illegal access to those information. He was sentenced to six years in Prison. Did I miss any name from this list? Include any one I have missed in the comment section.
