If you are doing your own personal business, abeg leave ur life who English help. Some of Nigeria's wealthy business men can speak good English, but banks MD are chasing them up down. As long as u can communicate in ur own little way, u r ok.

Look for Brighter Grammar books. Some bookshops could still have it.

I was almost like you.

My written English is insane. I write novels, long and short stories, movie scripts (all unpublished), and worked as a freelance writer for years. However, I sometimes made mistakes when I speak.

I later observed that it is caused by my stammering, which for some reason, made me concerned about speaking correct English. This made me lose confidence in my spoken English, causing it to go downhill.

But I was able to work around it.

Here is what I did:

Buy a large handheld mirror, make up imaginary conversations, and talk to yourself. However, make sure you:

1. Talk slowly and take pauses to catch your breath.

2. Learn proper pronunciation and enunciation. This works especially if you talk very fast, stammer, or just lack confidence.

Pronunciation is how sounds are made. Enunciation is how sounds are pronounced. That is, how clearly you talk. But don't bother yourself too much about the pronunciation and focus on the enunciation instead.

This is how enunciation works:

Most people tend to slur their words when they talk. So "went" becomes "wen", "sleeping" becomes "sleepin" and all that. "I went home" also becomes "I wen ome" and "I'm sleeping" becomes "Am slippin"

Try pronouncing the entire word without leaving the last letter, and make sure you pronounce each individual word in the sentence. "I went home" should be "I went home" and "I'm sleeping" should be "I'm sleeping".

This will force you to open your mouth and move your tongue when talking, drastically improving your English.

Lastly, I don't know if you have issues with this but talk using the SVO method. That is, the Subject comes first followed by the Verb and finally, the Object. That's how native speakers talk and this is how I write too (These sorts of statements are called active statements).

But Nigerians tend to put the Object first followed by the Verb and then the Subject (These are called passive sentences). Try to avoid passive statements unless it is very necessary.

NOTE: Try doing the mirror thing when alone, else people will start to think you are crazy. Your English won't improve instantly but you will start seeing changes after a week or two.

Also, try reading foreign news sites like BBC and The Guardian to get a grasp of the SVO thing. Those sites write in basic simple English. Nigeria's Punch Newspapers are also good.

I should also add that you should avoid speaking pidgin English unless you are dealing with people who don't understand it and always write in full, proper English. What you wrote up there isn't full. This would have been better:

I was once there.

I would stand in front of the mirror and speak some NONSENSE. But then, I kept practicing.

To date, I have an exercise book for writing down English words I find interesting.

Buy books and read. When you learn new words, write it down in that book.

Visit New York Times, BBC, Washington Post and read their news. Please forget Nigeria's media because most of them write NONSENSE.

Write down interesting phrases, idioms and jargons that you pick out from those websites.

Keep practicing in the comfort of your home, looking in your mirror every day. Read the book like your Bible.

More importantly, don't trust what we speak in this country because most of us speak NONSENSE.

Go online and sign up on Word Reference and ask the native speakers questions. American and British members will gladly answer you.

Don't mind anyone who tells you that English is not your language. You see, that language can change your life for good.

Do all this, and you will be glad you read this post.

watch cartoons, not just any but fast paced English speaking cartoons

Brighter Grammar comes to mind. I guess it would help.

Quite easy.......roam with people wey no speak/understand ur local language....u go learn by force by fire....


Or just read books, magazine, sport stories, listen to interviews, and communicat to urself in English through mind.....watch movies,

Watch more educative and interactive programs like news, documentaries, reality shows, debates, sports analysis...
It is even more effective than reading. It'll help you learn words and how to pronounce and use them easily.
Focus on British channels.
