shocked Why-on what basis? So because the US is the biggest shareholder in AfDB that now gives them the right to bully everybody around? Except if Akinwunmi Adeshina is truly guilty, the US is simply on a wild goose chase.

Bully?

I wouldn't say Bully. And Yes when you are the largest shareholder you have larger rights(not privileges).

If you think Otherwise then you go out there and start a company with your funds. then leave it up to others if you find anything funny in how it's being run.

My problem with some of us is that despite the US funding the Majority of the World's Unilateral organizations, we (who don't give much/have much) claim to "know" how best they should act on their money. Let the Shareholders act.

Was former FIFA President SEP BLATTER a Nigerian?
Fact is corruption happens everywhere in the world (even in USA). But Nigeria reputation has been soiled all over the world hence, everyone is suspicious of us.
We will know if Adeshina is innocent or guilty after the probe.

Having read Akinwumi Adesina's responses to each allegation made against him during first probe that cleared him, I am confident that he has nothing to fear on the part of integrity but I am not sure about the part of international politics. Imagine being accused of bribing President of ECOWAS countries in order to secure his 2nd term. But again, what do you expect when US, UK, Japan and likes have more investment stakes in Africa's developmental bank than the African countries themselves.

My deduction from from US call for independent probe is that US and Western stakeholders are profiling Akinwumi Adesina as a Nigerian from the prism of corruption.

Retaining Akinwumi Adesina as head of AfDB is a test for African Presidents to assert themselves. All eyes are on them.

Not really so in my opinion.

The US even investgated its presidency last year.
I really don't know Adesina and would like to believe he is innocent BUT no one's beyond investigation. Moreso he is an employee & a man. He is not incapable of doing the said.

It's sad that such a reputation precedes us as Nigerians.

THE TAAT ALLEGATION Against Adesina
The whistleblowers claimed that Mr Adesina impeded efficiency in his management of a $120 million Technologies for African Agriculture transformation (TAAT) programme after he allegedly used his “political weight” to compel a reluctant Board of Directors to award the initial grant of the programme worth $40 million to the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Nigeria.
“One has to remember that the President worked for IITA and AfricaRice, and both institutions were to benefit from the grant. The mastermind behind the project, Mr. FREGENE, is also an IITA alumnus and the task manager, Mr Mude, is an alumnus of ILRI, another institution financed by the programme.
“In 2018, IITA, the implementing agency, proceeded to purchase through direct procurement USD 5.46m worth of pesticides from a multinational company, while the grant contract specifically prohibited such procurement method. Fortunately, the fiduciary controls of the Bank stopped the process, but Mr. FREGENE went ahead and personally negotiated the price directly with the supplier and asked for the shipment of the pesticides. When confronted by senior management, he tried to launch a competitive bidding process to cover up the direct purchase. The fiduciary controls of the Bank worked once again, and the payment of the supplier’s invoice was blocked for non-compliance with Bank rules.
“When informed, the President himself requested the payment to be released to the supplier,” the petition stated.
PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT FOR NIGERIA AND AWARD RECEIVED
The whistleblowers also alleged that under Mr Adesina’s presidency, the bank’s organisation chart was altered to promote Nigeria to an almost full-fledged region.
“Admittedly, Nigeria is AfDB’s largest shareholder with over 9%, but it’s not clear if this justifies a preferential treatment. Nigerians have also been particularly well treated in the massive recruitment drive that was launched due to the restructuring of President ADESINA between 2016 and 2018. When roughly 9% of new recruits were Nigerians (or dual nationals of Nigerian origin) – in line with Nigerian shareholding –, they made up roughly 25% of the newly recruited managerial functions. It is not clear if this preferential treatment was justified by a previous under-representation,” they said.
They also accuse Mr Adesina of using the bank’s funds to cover associated costs in two major awards he won – the World Food Prize (USD 250,000) and the Sunhak Peace Prize (USD 500,000) – 2017 and 2019 respectively and wondered if the awards were not made to the bank why did the bank cover the associated costs of the awards?
“Dozens of people, Bank staff, executive Directors, former Head of State, entertainers or family members attended the award ceremonies at the Bank’s costs (one in Des Moines, Iowa, the other in Seoul, Korea). If these awards were private, why did the Bank support associated costs? If they were awarded to the President of the Group of the Bank were the awards returned to the Bank?”
POLITICAL LOBBYING AND USING BANK RESOURCES FOR SELF-PROMOTION
The whistleblowers described Adesina as “the unchallenged travel champion” of the bank and accused him of using the opportunities of his travels to meet regional heads of States and making financial promises to obtain their support for his re-election.
They also accused Mr Adesina of recruiting a biographer, Leon Hasser to write his authorised biography: “Against All Odds. World Food Prize Laureate Dr Akinwumi Adesina and His Drive to Feed Africa” (ISBN: 9781728315386) with the bank’s resources.
“It is unclear why the Bank paid for this biography, which was not officially promoted by the Bank, nor translated to the other official language of the institution. It primarily focuses on the accomplishments of the President when he was Minister of Agriculture in Nigeria and only received some limited publicity in Nigeria. More surprisingly, the terms of reference of Dr HESSER’s mission state that “all outputs delivered under this consultancy contract will remain the property of the protagonist of the book (Dr Akinwumi A. Adesina)” in contradiction with the usual Bank provision on intellectual property which states that “all proprietary and intellectual property rights (…) will be vested in (…) the Bank.”

This is a case of "we can't beat him at the Polls for is second term bid as the only sole candidate, let's smear his reputation to make him less credible and unfit" - It is international and board room politics at it best at play here.

The hand writing on the wall is when World Bank's David Malpass and IMF who are notorious for their draconian and debt plunging economics for African Countries complaints started.

AfDB under Adeshina brought about low interest loan policy of a single digit to help cushion Africa Over dependence on IMF loans.

Restructuring of AfDB economic policy that better suit African Countries. Thereby reducing francophone countries over dependence on debt trap French loans.

This is not a case of him being incompetent. Adeshina has lauded by African countries in coming to their needs and peculiarities as ascribed by South Africa, Nigeria and the rest which are the priorities of AfDB.

Nigeria being the largest shareholder over years was underrepresented in terms to staff ratio compare to France and the united States.

Again its not a case of incompetency but a game of self interest by the US and France - Its a smear campaign to discredit him pertaining to the next election.

Its time for Nigeria to be strategic and ready to play international politics in order to make Adeshina retain his second term mandate and its also time for Africa to begin her economic emancipation.

guy, any african would have done same for his country who supported his ascension to become afdb president, I think some fellow africans are just jealous, I have been in many african conferences and i can tell you there is this bad belle stuff towards Nigeria, they see us as very loud and proud which is not our fault but the way God wired us. Whatever Adeshina did, any african would have done same for his country. I bet you if he was a Cameroonian, no one will say all this shit. We all knew how issa hayatou was CAF President for so many years despite all the favouritsim he showerd on his country, till today TV rights on afcon and other matches are still being held by his son, don't know if the present CAF board has stopped that. Am not really a fan of Adeshina despite I have even sat in meetings with him when was former agric minister but when I see a Nigerian that has done well for himself, his country and the continent winning a coveted world food prize, I can never pander towards petty allegations on him and if that will cost him a second term shot, no wahala but Nigeria need to stop these silly african countries that can't match us in any way driving a backward agenda for africa. doen't make sense while another african who may not be as intellectual as adeshina takes the seat

According to the screenshot from the ADB website, Nigeria is the largest shareholder with 8.2% followed by the US with 6.6%.

Of the top 10 shareholders, 5 are African countries and 5 western countries and Japan.

Anazp:
The largest ADF shareholder is the United Kingdom, with approximately 14% of the total working shares followed by United States with approximately 6.5 percent of the total voting shares, followed by Japan with approximately 5.4 percent.

International politics is at play here.

International politics is brutally selfish. A game of self interests and chess like sharpness.

You need your best representing you or your country would be eaten alive in the game of life.

Is buhari our best? I think we all know the answer.

AfDB is becoming too strong and providing support for African countries and the west are not happy about this. Adesina is also dismantling French control over the bank and indirectly over Francophone Africa countries. These are part of the reasons why they are against him.

Seun your CONSISTENT anti-Igbos lifestyle has made Nigeria not capable of mobilising other Africans. If you & your myopic anti-Igbos had allowed Igboland to become HALF as Economically stable as Yorubaland, France wouldn't be INSISTING that all West African Economies must be SUBSUMED under the French Ministry of Finance, just like all Francophone Africans. Congratulations, this is the OUTCOME of your 50-year policies,1970-2020, of ENSURING that all development efforts in Nigeria MUST be based in Yorubaland.
Re: Adesina: African Lender Agrees On Independent Probe Of AfDB President by RTSC: 3:56pm On May 27, 2020
Nigeria should right now adopt a two prong approach, pursuing both at the same time.

Support adeshina to the end, while shopping for a replacement that would continue what he has started to ensure our interest in a worse case scenario.

Get a candidate and then Start lobbying the rest of Africa to support him right now.

At the same time ensure that adeshina gets the financial or diplomatic support he needs in the independent probe to emerge victorious.

It's a game of chess. You sleep, you lose.

France with only 3% of the Bank's Shares has 65 Senior Positions. France wants to FORCE Nigeria into an Eco West African currency that France will be using to sustain their failed Economy. Adesina isn't likely to sell out Nigeria to them. So they MUST find a reason to remove him, and install a puppet. Or you want their Economy to collapse?
