Hi good day my fellow Nairalander please I will really need your experience about this issue. Please help me read to the end as it is a little bit long.

My junior brother is 14 years old and to be sincere I haven’t seen anybody as dull as him. I don’t know if it is natural but I just can’t understand why someone at that age could still be struggling with very simple arithmetic. My brother can’t write 1 – 150 correctly at 14.

He seems too dull; note he attends one of the best private school around our area, though I know you might say maybe education is not his way but even if you want to drop out from school you should know some basic things like money, time, multiplication and so on but my brother doesn’t know anything I must say, even to write his name correctly is a problem. It is making everyone unhappy lot of money is being spent on lesson teachers and other things for him still no improvement.

I am a student of one of the top federal University in Nigeria same as my other siblings even at both secondary and undergraduate level we were always above average so I can’t say his problem is genetic. I really wants to know what is the problem with him nairalanders. After I finished secondary school I once taught some pupils in primary school though there were dull ones too there but with time I could see improvement unlike my brother i always try to teach him from time to time but it kind of frustrating as he doesn’t even seems like he will ever grab anything and he doesn’t behave like he wants to learn anything.

He makes it seems as if he is not interested book or arithmetic at all …we all tried talking to him endless time to always read any time he his less busy but he never does except he is being forced.

He rarely talks, he loves to keep to himself always, he doesn’t have interest in anything unlike we the others that are die hard football fans, most times my mom will tell him to even go out to play and mingle he will not still want to go, he prefer to stay at home seating all day without reading or doing anything, even if it is to draw or play football he wont.

This matter is not making everyone happy at home we don’t even know the solution to his problem again, as in imagine having a child that is 14 years old that doesn’t know the difference between 17 and 71 it is just so bad…..

We don’t know if his case is mental or spiritual. please nairalanders I know there are child experts in the house or anybody who have experienced something like this before what do you think is the problem and possible solutions to the problem your contributions are welcome.

For you to succeed in anything in life and earn money, you must know how to deal with numbers. If you don't know the difference between simple numbers like 17 and 71, then you can't engage in any meaningful thing.

C'mon at Op. your bro is not necessarily dull. it's obvious that he has multiple learning disabilities like: dyslexia, dyscalculia and even autism. You guys ought to have comes to terms with the peculiarities of his nature, and instead of enrolling him into the "best school in your aree" a good special school would have surfice to carter for all his discrepancies.

He need an educational placement to suit is capabilities and pace of learning. popularly called Individualized Educational Programme(IEP) all theses are available in special schools.

Go to YouTube and watch "like stars on earth every child is special" you will understand your brothers frustration. It's a 2hrs plus movie.

If you are educated at all like you present yourself to be, you would have known there are medical conditions that makes it difficult for some to learn like others.

You should have known that people like your brother learn things differently and at a different pace.

You as a sibling should get the very condition your brother has and find a special school for him.

Get to know your brother more. Find out what he likes to do and has a passion for. Encourage him to pursue it.

May God have mercy on you and your family for sitting in the dark and adding to your brother's low self esteem. Poor boy.

The OP only used 17 and 71 to highlight his point. It's a very complex situation. The young boy is struggling badly with numbers. How do you expect such a person to be able to count money? If he opens a business and people pay him cash for goods, how can he count them? How can he even use calculators when he can't differentiate numbers that look alike?
The issue isn't just that he doesn't know how to do simple addition and subtraction. That can be dealt with by calculators. Failing to appreciate numbers at that age is a serious learning difficulty.

It is one thing not to be sound on school books, but a kid of 14 should be lively, be up and about, its the natural adrenaline...i think you should do some research, a conventional hospital might not help, they have rehab centres for such, its not normal for a kid to be slow, unless he is involved in some bad habits that can alter his coordination, or a biological defect...

He should be enrolled to any vocational training. HR could do well and make you and your family proud

U guys noticed this and u let him remain till 14yrs. Take him to the hospital and u people should be patient with him because it isn't his fault. Don't forget the power of love show him love as a family.

Maybe he is dyslexic or has some other learning disability. Nobody dull. Google learning disabilities. If he indeed attends one of the best private schools, they should have been able to identify that he may have a learning disability.

He is withdrawn because everyone s forcing him to read. Do this. Do that. Whithout identifying what the reeeaaal problem is.

Learning probably frustrates him and so he has no interest in it.

Have you guys ever taken him to a pediatric psychologist? Or first off, a pediatrician who can refer?

He may seem dumb to you but it's usually far from what from what you think it is. I will suggest that you try and observe him through a platform other than the one you are standing on Now. he could turn out to be a phenomenal genius.

No child is too dull.. I can deduce that from the bold that u people have not been handling it the right way. Probably u all make fun of him and his short comings, intimidate and constantly put him down, hence that attitude towards life,learning and everything. The truth is that most of such kids if handled properly turn out to be exceptional in anything they eventually can find love with. If he truly attends one of the best schools he would have been noticed in class and singled out for specific attention. That's what is done in the best schools. Not the popular private schools that litter every corner theae days. I'm talking about schools that have the interest of every single student as its top priority, to know nuture and groom them.. There is nothing spiritual or mental here but maybe psychological due to ur constant negative procedure to help him. If he's not handled with love now he will grow up worse not just academically but socially and otherwise. Kids like these are never in the middle. They're either hot or cold. And if he goes the other way with promises of fake love from fake families by association then only God will be able to help him. I think u guys should change ur approach towards him. No need shaming him or comparing him to other kids. Treat him with special care and attention... Although i wasnt as bad as ur kid brother but I was never really good with maths and my dad didn't really handle it the right way.. You know back in the days even now lots of parents attach intelligence to maths. Not until after my first Jamb that i failed to meet the mark because of maths. Then i met a further maths teacher who made me understand and love maths finally. I became the supplier and plug for answers in uni days when it came to anything relating to the Almighty calculus during exams. Try to know the kid please..there must be one subject he likes or something he has interest in. Everyone doesn't have to be with the popular crowd or go with what they do to be normal. There is nothing wrong with him. He just needs attention and lots of love. How is ur family setting like is there something else ur not saying about this child? Just asking to be clear tho.
