Lol. Soon intellectual disability will deemed inappropriate, as was once idiot, imbec1le, slowpoke etc.

Well it will be unethical for me as a professional to address a client as an idiot, imbec.ile or slowpoke after conducting a mental status examination.

Very very clear your brother is in the autistic spectrum and may also have a learning disability, maybe dyslexia

It's not the poor boy's fault that his brain is wired to see 17 and think it's 71,not his fault that reading appears so overwhelming..the alphabets musy appear scrambled to him & his brain can't cope.

Think about it,do you think he would choose not to know the difference between 17&71 by choice?

If someone gives you a book and places it upside down, would you be able to read it?

The poor boy must have been struggling for so long, his self esteem must be in tatters.

You and your family should see a paediatrician or a child psychiatrist or psychologist for a diagnosis then hopefully point you to a specialist that manages kids with learning disabilities

You all must be frustrated and i empathise but think of how much your brother is suffering.

I agree with this...read some things about kids who suffer from dyslexia. But they mostly catch them young not in their teens. Poor boy....may God help us in this country. A well trained teacher would have noticed a long time ago! It is well.

Do you know if your brother has dyslexia or other learning disabilities? Has he been tested for any such?
Since you are so smart, why don't you educate yourself on these and test your brother, and help get him the help he needs instead?

It is making everyone unhappy lot of money is being spent on lesson teachers and other things for him still no improvement.? undecided undecided Really?
Have you considered how the boy feels about not grasping even some of the simplest of things? Put yourself in his shoes, and stop thinking it is all about you and everyone else. Help your brother in every way you can.
I don't know anything about dyslexia until now but I will make research on it... concerning helping him believe me we have a been trying our best since when he was even younger but it just seems like a fruitless effort though we didn't stop but it kind of frustrating

It is not spiritual, your younger is dealing with learning disabilities and from your write up I have picked up dyslexia, dyscalculia which falls under neurobiological disorder.

There is need to take him to go see a Neuropsychologist for a diagnosis and treatment plan.

I encourage you to go online to research on these learning disabilities and you will gain insight and better empathize with your brother as the way he has been handled has really dented his self-esteem.
thanks a lot
can you recommend a Neuropsychologist for me

Instead of your family to be wasting money on lesson teachers, has anyone ever considered taking him to a child psychologist?

Have you guys even considered how he feels, being looked down on as the dullard in the family? A family of graduates and undergraduates, yet no one has thought of taking him to see a professional.

Anyway, you mentioned he doesn't know the difference between 17 and 71, it's most likely dyslexia. Then again like others have said, it can also be dyscalculia or he's in the autism spectrum. The only true way to know is for him to see a professional.
thanks a lot can you recommend a professional about the matter for me

Try to explore what interests him (he will definitely have one, or say some kind of talent or maybe literary skills); encourage him to open up...

Very stubborn??, wow
I really don't know what to say

Like who are his peers, what school did he attend,

I think the stubbornness is the main thing here, he may intentionally refuse to learn as a way of getting back to people at home, like he is still young and may think he is doing you a favour learning and at the moment he doesn't want to do u that favour

Hope u don't flog him too much or use harsh words on him, perhaps it's what making it complicated

People with dyslexia are known to be stubborn. U just have to manage them and be very subtle with them.

What state do you live in? Take him to a teaching hospital in the state he will be referred.

Dyslexia or autism comes with behavioural issues also resistance is formed from years of taunting, flogging and abuse from those who do not understand the condition. A therapist will help you as a family to understand how to work with him.

Will you keep quiet! Are the certificates of different value? You're there selecting when all your options are bad. Or have you seen a job advert that states "Unilag Bsc only"?

Hi good day my fellow Nairalander please I will really need your experience about this issue. Please help me read to the end as it is a little bit long.
My junior brother is 14 years old and to be sincere I haven’t seen anybody as dull as him. I don’t know if it is natural but I just can’t understand why someone at that age could still be struggling with very simple arithmetic. My brother can’t write 1 – 150 correctly at 14. He seems too dull; note he attends one of the best private school around our area, though I know you might say maybe education is not his way but even if you want to drop out from school you should know some basic things like money, time, multiplication and so on but my brother doesn’t know anything I must say, even to write his name correctly is a problem. It is making everyone unhappy lot of money is being spent on lesson teachers and other things for him still no improvement.
I am a student of one of the top federal University in Nigeria same as my other siblings even at both secondary and undergraduate level we were always above average so I can’t say his problem is genetic. I really wants to know what is the problem with him nairalanders. After I finished secondary school I once taught some pupils in primary school though there were dull ones too there but with time I could see improvement unlike my brother i always try to teach him from time to time but it kind of frustrating as he doesn’t even seems like he will ever grab anything and he doesn’t behave like he wants to learn anything,, he makes it seems as if he is not interested book or arithmetic at all …we all tried talking to him endless time to always read any time he his less busy but he never does except he is being forced. He rarely talks, he loves to keep to himself always, he doesn’t have interest in anything unlike we the others that are die hard football fans, most times my mom will tell him to even go out to play and mingle he will not still want to go, he prefer to stay at home seating all day without reading or doing anything, even if it is to draw or play football he wont
This matter is not making everyone happy at home we don’t even know the solution to his problem again, as in imagine having a child that is 14 years old that doesn’t know the difference between 17 and 71 it is just so bad….. we don’t know if his case is mental or spiritual. please nairalanders I know there are child experts in the house or anybody who have experienced something like this before what do you think is the problem and possible solutions to the problem your contributions are welcome
lalasticlala mynd44 please help me push this pleaseeeeee

While your brother MAY be suffering from a medical condition like autism or whatever, I can tell you from experience that there's a high possibility of him suffering from low self esteem and depression, hence the withdrawal and isolation. Please make sure your brother is mentally and emotionally okay, so he doesn't suffer trauma later in life. I had a similar childhood with your brother's.

People were always laughing at me that I had big head, and that stuff eat very deep down that I struggled with low self esteem throughout adolescence.

If your brother is only dull. Then he should be very playful. Hence, there's more to it.
