Greizman: I listen to Fuji Garbage almost everyday while I exercise on the bridge (I've also posted it many times on Nairaland) and I had an audio cassette of Talazo in the 1980s, but the reason that they are not included in this thread is explained in the post you quoted. Both Fuji Garbage and Talazo were fuji songs that had hip hop influences. Listen to Omoge Loke Loke at the 31:49 mark in that video. It was a rap song. It wasn't even an Afro Juju song, it was actually a rap song that had a little bit of Juju flavour. Shina Peters was the first to do a rap song in Yoruba. |

Of course there have been collaborations between Nigerian artistes and foreign hip hop artistes, like this: D'Banj ft Snoop Dogg - Mr Endowed (Remix) (2010). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0h8mbfUyAg |

scobaba: the tittle of the X Appeal song is What u want, Jazzman Olofin & Lexzy doo ft Plantashun Boiz. I doubt if the video is online. I can also remember the song by Komo blastic he was the guy that appear in Plantashun boiz Don;t u know video with cowries on his hair, too bad he had copy right issue with 2face at some point. Now I can't help but think thro the days of beat point, OJB of blessed memory.... We have artist like Xclusive, Six O, C- Mon of Africa lady, Artquake - Abule Lawa, Kaha - Party Buddie, Azziat (Tiwa of those years), Kween, Ashionye, Ama (one of OJB's wife) and many more. Finally dis new crops are garbage or maybe its just a change in tune, cos I remember parents always complain, what kind of noise r u ppl listening to these days Finally I need to leave dis country... |

scobaba: pope191: It's online. Meanwhile, I've spent the past 5 days trying to remember one of Kaha's songs, but I can't. The only thing that I can remember about the video was that his eyes were very weird at the end of the video. |

Angelfrost:That we couldn't follow up on these great and talented acts that SA rappers now be outshining us.. We could easily be second to on the US in the world in Hip Hop with the array of talented rappers we had then.. P.S We still have many talented underground rap artist, but the moment the spotlight beams they wanna go commercial coz there's really no market for Hip Hop here in Naija and that's why the rappers down south of the continent be excelling. |

naptu2: @Naptu, I've seen this X Appeal video, but that's wasn't their main vid, the main one is a kind of palour party. I'm still looking for You is the one by Azadus video Let's remember Pastor goody goody Black tribes of No ni and Sultaan (In 2face voice) - Koleyewon and mathematics |

Realhommie: I don't believe we can sell rap to Americans, they won't accept that from us, the main reason our music is getting recognition today is d influence of afrobeat in it, I just crack a smile reading a post here yesterday about Patoranking not being able to do reggae perfectly... If he tries such in this era, they will raise GoFund for him last, I think ppl just like latest song, its not as if anything is intriguing about those songs, play Peacock Eddie quansa or Fela and watch how they look at u, but same old school tracks is what the likes of Burna boy and Yemi Alade is biting from to claim gaint |
Re: The Evolution Of Hip Hop Music In Nigeria: The '80s And Early 90s. by Realhommie(m): 9:57am On Jun 03, 2020 |
pope191:We can sell rap actually to Americans via great collaborations. The truth is if you're that good you'll be accepted though it may take some time but it's not impossible. My opinion sha And you're right about the influence of Afro beats getting us recognition as at today, I totally agree. |
Re: The Evolution Of Hip Hop Music In Nigeria: The '80s And Early 90s. by pope191: 10:37am On Jun 03, 2020 |
Realhommie: I somewhat want to agree with you, but let's make do of what we've witnessed... When you say great collaborations, then we have to talk about our finest, it will b difficult to mix local dialect with hardcore rap, so when we talk about our finest, I'll say mode, freestyle, M.I, Overdose and Jessy Jagz.... Do u really think Nas, Jay, K west, immortal Techniques, Eminem, J cole, Kendrick or Lupe will really want to dedicate their time for these peeps? Remember M.I once accused Nas of taking money from him and fail on his part to honour agreement. This same tin is what Ruggedman fought for, we should do music in our mother tongue and stop trying to b original version of other people. Outside rap, almost all the international collabo is rubbish, let's just call it exposure, from beautiful onyinye fans mi |

sassysure: A lot of rumours sprang up in Nigeria because of that song. Some gossip magazines in Nigeria claimed that the song was directed at his father because his father wanted him to focus on dentistry and forget about music. There were all kinds of rumours flying around. He started out as rapper who could toast in a reggae/raga style, but he later switched to full time singing. He had several hits in the 1990s, but most of his later hits were not rap songs and that’s why they are not on the first page. This song is one of his best songs. The song was originally done by the Jamaican band Uhuru in 1979. Uhuru was one of the most famous Jamaican bands and its members included Sly and Robbie, the most famous Jamaican production team. Dr Alban teamed up with Micheal Rose, who is a former member of Uhuru, for this version of the song in 1997. Dr Alban later teamed up with his cousin Charly Boy, to create a totally Nigerian version of the song (it was in Pidgin English). That version was released in the early 2000s. naptu2: Naptu2 please can you help me? There's this song that used to enjoy air play on NTA then in fact not just one. Please I've searched YouTube I can't find them if you can HELP post them here I'll be happy for that- 1. Cost of living so high The same guy sang 'I want to make you mine' He had jerry curls and he sang inside bubble bath 2. Emily look what you've done to me, don't go oh Emily come back home... Naptu2 this song i don't know the title but it was about a girl who married an older rich man, arranged men to kill him, he didn't die and she was arrested. It reigned in the time of checkmate 3. Tony Harmony's Sample Me 4. Tony Tetuila - iya me oh 5. Stan - ibu Chineke The guy who sang I think money makes the world goes round. His sister won most beautiful girl that period. The video was shot in a very greenery place like a garden. It's upbeat Ibu Chineke... Alpha Omega ahh ahh 5. Then please add more from south now... I'm not into rap any more though. I've always been a rock fan then I titled towards songs about social injustice foreign and African. Thinking back I'll say these people- Evi Edna, Majek Fasek, Orits Wiliki, Ras Kimono, Tracy Chapman, Phil Collins, Cranberries, Wyclef, Boney M, ABBA, Madonna, R. Kelly, Toni Braxton, Lagbaja, Uncle Zack, Baba Fryo, daddy Shokey, Enya, Tupac, and some others shaped my thought pattern till I gave Christ Jesus my life. The best thing if not, most of the songs can push one to anger, depression, violence and the thug life. But music eh ... to worsen it as that we had it all- the big audio cassette we used to play in our 504, to regular audio tapes, then small tapes from midget recorder, to music video cassettes, to Walkman to discman, to mp3 that play only fm, to laser discs (big and thick), we even had turn table and records (the ones you put that thing on top and it starts spinning and playing music! Then VCD, DVD now YouTube and all. I even had a radio which could record so I'll station myself by the radio to the fm station i know would play the songs I liked then record the songs. Then the DCA who people call OAP now will interrupt with time, or news or announcements and spoil the recording. Hmm and that time we can travel... so you'll be hearing songs from different parts of Nigeria. With relations from the 1940s, 50s through to 70s you cannot but know songs that are older than you. For instance how come I know about Rex Lawson, Ofege and the rest |
