With all due respect that 73mm low velocity gun has no advantages unless the target is sitting still at 400 meters.... and no, a 30mm on any vehicle is useless, in fact any .50cal weapons mounted on a vehicle without any form of stabilization like we do with our vehicles is almost useless....we need a dedicated platform designed around the gun with good fire control system.....else we just have a terror weapon, not a killing weapon, how many seized vehicles or bodies, have you seen with .50 cal sized holes?

Honestly Huge investment in IFV with 23mm or 30mm cannon of at least 2km effective firing range would be a game changer in the war against bokoharam cos the vehicle and its ammo is cheap and its effect of BH light vehicles is very deadly...They are more useful than even tanks in this war cos tanks are for bigger targets which bokoharam hardly posses...Producing these vehicles locally either from scratch or through license production shouldn't be hard for the army to engage in.

Sure, we need many IFVs with 22-30mm cannons, like the BMP 2 variant is armed with a 30mm cannon. You are right, just as I am, that those would be useful in defeating boko haram.

But the army is looking far ahead. If we arm these IFVs with 30mm guns. What happens when boko haram ends, and we face a real army.

So, obviously while you are correct about the 23-30mm guns in defeating boko haram. We must look beyond that. We need IFV that can fight real armoured vehicles in real war scenarios. Boko haram would come and go. But inferior IFVs would remain in the armoury.

All bmp 1s come with spg 73mm gun, which on its own is an anti tank gun, installed on the bmp1, even the almost useless bmp2, was built with the 30mm gun, because of the useless 73mm spg 9

You are very correct though. The BMP1 has many deficiencies, including the location of the fuel tank and firing inaccuracies.

Maybe that is the reason we are buying them as Used not brand new. The MoD must have plans for more potent IFVs. I will hope...

NAF RECORDS FIRST ALL-FEMALE CREW ON OPERATIONAL ISR MISSION

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has again made history with the conduct of an operational Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) mission by an all-female crew. The mission, which was conducted on 28 May 2020 using the NAF Beechcraft KingAir ISR aircraft, had Flying Officers Oluwabunmi Ijelu and Genevieve Nwaogwugwu as Captain and Co-Pilot, respectively, with Sergeant Njoku Patience as the Airborne Tactical Observation System (ATOS) mission operator and Lance Corporal Shawulu Godiya as the on-board technician. It is noteworthy that Flying Officer Ijelu is the first female officer to become a Captain on a NAF aircraft. The aircraft was also marshaled by a female Marshaller, Aircraftwoman David Precious. The mission, which was preceded by the customary pre-flight briefing, originated from the 307 Executive Airlift Group (307 EAG), at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport and covered selected areas of interest in Niger State and its environs, where intelligence that would support NAF air interdiction missions as well as the operations of ground forces was gathered.

The Commander 307 EAG, Air Commodore Francis Edosa, while welcoming the all-female crew from the mission, applauded them for displaying a high level of professionalism. He remarked that the feat was only made possible as a result of the commitment of Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, to providing a level playing field for all personnel, whether male or female, to thrive and realize their dreams and aspirations in service to the Nation. This, he said, had translated into tangible positive results. He therefore thanked the CAS for giving the female personnel the opportunity to prove their worth in hitherto male-dominated specialties in the NAF.

Within the past 4 and half years of the current NAF leadership, there has been a surge in the involvement of female personnel in areas that were previously the preserve of men. Five female pilots have been winged within the period, bringing the total number of female pilots in the NAF to 7. Many other female officers and airwomen are excelling in their various fields of specialization including Regiment and Special Forces, Aircraft/Armament Engineers and Technicians as well as Air Traffic Controllers, amongst others. The NAF’s objective in this regard is to maximize all of the potentials of Nigeria’s vast human resource pool, male and female, to ensure the effective, efficient and timely employment of Air Power in response to Nigeria’s national security imperatives.
