Why do you want to start another round of arguments?

Not worth it in my opinion.

Which kind culture when some people even collect salary advance, just thank God for your own. I thank God for my own too

Is a culture. You can only practice it when you believe in it.
How can someone who earn 1,000 a month manage it. If you really understand savings, you will know that the person can as well manage 900 per month.
In both cases it wont be enough to meet your basic needs but you can save to make your future better.

I find that strange, perhaps the money is in the accessories.

If I were consulted to do a business analysis for it, I would have given it a poor mark.

Lots of people tend to only change their phones when their old phones are faulty, Typically, that is every 3 years. Of course there are people who buy when the latest phones are out but they are in the minority. Then there is the fact that there is a lot of competition.

I do find it strange even though I believe you, I can't understand the reason why this is so.

Let's make a quick and dirty calculation.

Assuming 1% of Nigerian population buy phones every month. (Very possible)

Every month, 1% of 200 million people (2 million).

Let's also assume an average profit of 4000 naira per phone sold.

Further, let's assume the average number of phone dealers per state to be 1000 retailers.

Then, 2m x 4000 ÷ (1000 x 36 states) = 220k (this is if sales where to be distributed equally)

An average phone dealer makes 220k (net profit) per month. Mind you some will make a lot less and some others will make a lot more.

The same concept is also valid for most consumer goods. You have to consider our huge population o.

Savings is good, it's important but not necessary, why?

Savings can be defined mathematically as:
Income less Expenditure.

If income isn't sufficient to take care of expenses (basic expenses like food, shelter and clothing) then savings shouldn't be expected.

Let's face reality, how much can the average worker save from a monthly wage of 30k?

The only reality I can see is, whoever wants to save will save.

Like many others have mentioned, the worker in the example you gave will still survive on a monthly wage of 25k.

I overheard "my house" security( a boy of 23 years) tell someone he wants to open another bank account because the one he has is not a regular account and it just hit a threshold that prevents him from depositing any further money. I don't know how much he has in the said account but a similar account with Diamond bank back in the days had a maximum of N500,000

His salary? N15,000 naira monthly.

Nothing of such...I posted it to encourage those sending PMS to me about their intention in relocating to Ireland even after previous arguments and words of discouragement from some people. I am an advocate of good news, I love to see others making it as long as your intentions are good. No country is perfect, your circle matters even if one goes to heaven and start dine with the devil, one will be sent to hell. In other words, I can't discourage people not to come to where I'm living. Eshin waju ni teyin nwo sare! Moreover this thread is open to all forms of educative informations we are here to learn and move on.
A gentleman commanded all of us during the arguments and he advised we should edit it to shorten the thread for new comers. Guess what? I was the only one that complied and that makes me a gentlelady n the peaceful one. grin

This is true.
There is no excuse for not saving.
I can only support a tradesman who have no savings because I know from experience that every penny made by him or her is reinvested in that business until it hits satiety before they start to diversify by most times developing property.
That is why it is easy to see a man or woman with capital base not exceeding 20M naira in his or her business but has properties worth 80M.
These people can't save liquid cash because there is always one sweet trade around the corner demanding for that capital before it even builds up undecided

This model of tradesmen is understandable. My grouse is with those who give the " I can't save because my salary/income is not enough" excuse. They are mostly the ones doing online almajiri all over nairaland and twitter.

A distant friend once told me her friends wedding was fast approaching and she needs me to borrow her money for asoebi and to sew it. When I asked why she can't take from her savings, her reply was that the money she earns where she works can barely cater for her basic needs and she lives from hand to mouth.

My advice to her was this, wear whatever you have to the wedding. If that won't fly, you can decide not to attend. Heaven will not fall.

That obviously was not the response she wanted so the discussion ended. Few months later, I went through her status and realised she ended up buying the cloth and attended the wedding. My guess is, she got someone else to borrow her the money.

When she collects her salary, returns the money and whatever is left cannot sustain her for the month, she starts telling whoever that cares to listen that her salary is not enough.

If salary is low, it will be very difficult to save. The best thing for those in that category is to look for other avenues to earn more money.

Yes.
Nigeria problem is people living above their means.
People here Want to always represent and give the larger than life aura whereas their pockets are empty.
It happens quite a lot.
Nigeria and its people need iron hands.

This is very rampant in those areas. Even some of the real estate companies in Ibeju-Lekki axis who bought land falling under Lekki Coastal and Epe Lagoon are facing this problem too. Buy land for 1.5M, 2 years later they are asking you to ratify with 2.5M. It's rubbish.

But I believe proper due diligence before purchase can prevent all these.

I like quick and fast cars. You won't be able to brake yourself out of trouble eveytime, sometimes you have to accelerate out of it.

I can't take bends and dodge potholes at speeds with an SUV the way I'll do with a sedan.

I beg to disagree. When I was earning 35k 4years ago I had my monthly savings. Savings is a culture irrespective of earnings.

Even though i agreed with you on ''savings is a culture'' but do you know we have people that their transportation to work alone is more than their monthly take home pay and they still go to work just because they don't wanna stay at home, hoping for a better tomorrow. I have seen some who have already spent their salary before receiving it just to settle accumulated debt.

I just want to put this out there for someone earning low and feels quite disadvantaged by default as regards saving from the meagre income. There is always this overwhelming feeling about how much/how long do you have to save to accrue a significant amount.

In the year 2012-2014, I was earning 27k as an M.Sc. holder and still saved enough to live well and eat good, nutritious food grin.
My personal utilities for my wedding was also from the savings I had from this meagre income.

Now, I save over 80% of my salary monthly. That saving culture didn't jump on me today. It started several years ago when I was earning a meagre sum of 27k, even though I wasn't able to save more than 10% of my income as at then.

The key is living below your means. Do not compare yourself with others. Be grateful for the little you have. These 3keys are ways of life that opens the door to gradual albeit steady abundance; increasing your income and consequently, your ability to save more.
