You said it all. Not everyone could afford that N800 back then. How much was the minimum wage again? cheesy People should stop using the past to hurt themselves. We can't turn back the hands of time... Those days are gone and buried!

Well said. My Dad said something in my teens which stuck with me always.

Nigeria was once Great

Nigeria was never great

We just had an economy we couldn't manage

All the leaders needed was just time to show that the economy the colonial master gave us was difficult for them to run

Managing an economy is the most difficult task before a leader

There is NO PART of Lagos you can buy a full plot of land for 456k!

NaijadrivaCars:
As at today, 1,169.84 United States Dollar =456,237.60 Nigerian Naira.

An amount that couldn't buy a plot of land in Lagos then but today, it can in some areas.

Nigeria which way?

That's because your father ain't Einstein. So the fuel price that came down was a curse to you according to your father's theory? Of course I am not advocating I.Q tests as prerequisite for procreation.

Given! But standard of living then and noe, which is better?

If we want to use food as a yardstick, Nigerians eat very well then than now. A good number of families in the city had food rosters.so you don't get to repeat same food twice in a week, except you crave for it.
In some areas I see some improvements. You rarely find kids walking barefoot to school or walking about in the neighborhood semi naked again

If these generation can reduce show off and living beyond means maybe they will have more money to buy good food to eat. It is common to see people with low wages staying in 2/3 bedroom flats, an apartment that eats bulk of their salaries.

nonsense theory. this doesn't mean the past leaders and citizens then did not failed us

Nigeria discovered oil in 1956, Dubai discovered theirs in 1966 but look at Dubai today and look at Nigeria. I'm not even talking about human development here, I'm talking about physical development

this country na hopeless and useless country, there is no soothsaying about that

It's not about salary or minimum wage....
Its the purchasing power that matters....
In tho 70s, things were cheap and the little salary can actually go a long way....
U could buy basic food stuffs with coins and few naira....

My Dad bought his first car in 1979, just few months after he started working as a teacher......
And he paid cash for it.....
I doubt a new oil and gas worker can pull such stunt now....

Inflation and naira depreciation over the years, has led to constant rise in cost of living without a commensurate rise in wages....
That's what our parents complained about....

The truth is working n middle class had it better then than now....

THE OLDER GENERATION BETWEEN THE AGE OF 55 -85 DEAD AND ALIVE ARE MOSTLY FAILED GENERATION.

THEY ARE THE GREEDY USELESS GENERATION THAT PUT US IN THE CURRENT MESS AND MOST OF THEM ARE STILL IN-CHARGE.

THEY ENJOYED IN THEIR TIME, MOST OF THEM WHERE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITIES TO NATION'S LEADERS EVEN AT A VERY YOUNG AGE, even in their 20s.
BUHARI
BABANGIDA
OBASANJO
ABACHA ETC

BUT THEY GOT TO THE POSITION AND BECAME GREEDY BASTÄ„RDS. NOW EVERYONE IS SUFFERING.

IT WILL NEVER BE WELL WITH ALL OF THEM IN THE IN HEREAFTER.

Truth is that exchange rate isn't a determinant of how good an economy is. For instance, Ghana cedis exchanges higher than the Chinese currency and Korean won and that doesn't mean Ghana has a better economy. Another example is the Kuwait Dina which exchanges for almost $1000/dinar. During the said time, very few people can afford to buy a car even when it sold for #4000. But we have folks buying used cars today for tens of millions.

Having said the above, it's undeniable that Nigeria didn't have potential back in the day. It's just that we had lots of petrodollars and less population and the government then was able to do her job without borrowing like today. Forget all the glorious tales our parents told us about how quick you can get jobs. That's because there were fewer graduates then. We need total overhaul of this country

You have said it all sir. In 1982, with 800 naira you can buy up to 6 plots of land

My father left for the UK that year. He always emphasized that he was never desperate to leave Nigeria,
IBB destroyed the Nigerian middle class in my opinion. The structural adjustment program was a mess. It completely destroyed the purchasing power of that social class.

The problem is not in the absolute population; the problem is in the percentage of the unproductive population.

Sad as it may seem, the truth is that the only profitable thing some people would have done by the end of today is commenting on Nairaland! And that doesn't add a dime to our GDP.

So many people are waiting to consume the cake baked by few people!
