Lostz:

how will Facebook, Google etc pass the tax if you don't use any of their pay to use services?

they should stop operating in Nigeria if they are not ready to pay tax

Mr, you are not getting it at all

Let me break it down for you to understand

Let's assume you pay 1k for your ads to reach 10,000 people, now Facebook can either add like 50naira to that 1000naira payment making 1050 for your ads to reach 10,000 people or they reduce numbers of audience tour 1000naira ads will reach from 10,000people to 9500people.

At the end, it's Nigeria that still pays

Do you get it now?

The concern raised by PwC is about how to enforce the law and not whether it’s appropriate or not. Facebook, Netflix, and Twitter do not sell data to you so what’s your point?

Your initial post was to attack the entire idea and that is what I found appalling. I don’t get why a Nigerian should have a problem with the government asking companies making money from Nigeria to pay their fair share of taxes like every other corporate entity.

By your logic Facebook and Google need to establish a corporate presence in every country for tax purposes, because they both have a global userbase. Does that sound sensible to you?

If you make a profit by rendering services or selling products to the citizens of a given nation, you're liable to pay tax to the government of that nation, provided there's a mandate to that effect.

Thus, FG's plan to tax Facebook and its likes is a policy that should've been enforced years back. However, due to the dynamic nature of sure firms, drafting a tax compliant policy can be cumbersome. That said, I'm not surprised why people find this rather inconvenient, given the type of government we have. But let's call a spade a spade.

Someday you will realize I am actually the one telling you the fact. It's a pity you won't come back to acknowledge my points.

When you leave the shores of Nigeria and get to developed countries, you will understand the full concept of tax, its implication on the economy of the nation, and why your perspective about tax isn't feasible.

Till then, best of luck

What you failed to understand is that it's not every business that you passed burden of rubbish tax on your customer

I doubt you are a business man anyway so I will leave you to your things

Mind you, I know what am saying when I complain about excessive tax

Go and ask importers how far and they will tell you whats up

I won't argue with you any further because you seems not to understand what we are discussing here

Hahahahahahaha, these companies are so smart that they avoid being taxed in several other well organised and advanced countries.

FIRS that can't even record 100% tax collections with physically available companies in Nigeria wants to go after companies operating in a much more complex area such as the digital technology space, I wish them well.

Our main problem has never been that of revenue, our main problem is looting and spending priorities.

There is no double taxations like we have here. You are not subjected to FG, State, LG and area boys taxation on the same business or premise. You get tax rebate yearly as incentive. In Developed Countries, due to Covid19, you are given palliative cheques or food because your pay tax. I pay more than #2.5m as tax yearly what do I get in return?

Can you just find out if they are paying tax in other countries. If yes, Government has the right to tax them. Our readiness to attack this Government at all time is beginning to affect the way we think and reason.

China also had the incentive to be industrial, as they have no resources to export.

In 1960'S we had a guaranteed market for our agricutural products. That started to change from the 1970's when we lost the guaranteed market in the UK.(Other countries like New Zealand who used to sell their agric produce to the UK too had that problem). Oil revenues covered up for the losses until 1982 when the price crashed, and we went into recession.

Also, a disproportionate amount of the regional funds were spent in the urban areas. If you lived in the villages, good luck. No light, no potable water, no good roads even. State creation was what brought some development closer to the people.Even in the urban areas, not everyone benefited from regional government.(As an example, these phones we are using. Under regional governemt very few people had phones.)

And regional government was not free from corruption too either. There is a reason why the January coup happened..

Again, we don't have guaranteed markets, plus it is going to take years to regulate and set up markets for these minerals. Meanwhile, money has to be raised. And...it would be taxes.

Again, power cannot work in Nigeria unless Nigerians pay their power bills. Government has a budget of $26billion this year. We need to spend at least $30 billion yearly to improve power to 24/7. And since power is private....it is from our pockets.

Like how did we get GSM. ? Government did not build all those telecom masts...it was our money, all the money that we pay to the GSM companies for services rendered that enables them to build up all them masts, etc.

A situation where DISCOS and GENCOS are not allowed to control the prices of what they sell, plus the fact that AS high as 50% of Nigerians don't pay, means many of the DISCOS and GENCOS run at a loss. Thus they put pressure on those of us that do pay(which is why you are complaining about them milking us dry).

OK...just wait till the next relgious or tribal riots happen , then you will see whose side the state police is on. There are ideals, and there is reality.

That's why you people need to join parties, form parties, and fight hard. What we are doing on Nairaland is useless.

Democracy is hard work. It is because we are so used to colonialists, then the Army doing things for us, that we forget to do things for ourselves.

Exactly my anger. This admin is just a bunch of thieves. Some time last year, they came with similar idea such that they wanted to be taxing people who run ads via facebook.

In their mind, they think it was something like the offline business that they enjoy frustrating... I was just there wondering how they are gonna implement it. One person took them to court and they lost the case. Though some guys were panicking but I told them not to worry because they can not implement it because they lack the system to do that.

As far as this internet thing is concerned, whoever came up with the idea (like a thieve) in on a wild goose chase cos they will waste their time. They are always looking for where to steal.
