I'm not a fan of Ojukwu in the least, as I feel he should have waited it out, bidded time by employing tactical diplomatic manouvres to buy time, and build an adequate military for an armed struggle. But he was a young man with no prior leadership skill in the political sense at least. Yet he fought against all odds and much against his wish ab initio (remember he was mandated by the people of the Eastern region to declare Biafra and five them guns to avenge the killings of their brethren in the North). He ran after he couldn't sustain the struggle, nearly millions mostly children died from starvation... If it counts as some moral victory, you didn't crush us by some military genius, rather you suffered far more losses in men and materials despite your vast superiority in men and materials. We only surrendered to the might of the British/Russian/Arab collaborations due to starvation, not outright military humiliation.

Replace Yorubas with Igbos in that same circumstance of history but with a plot twist... If Yorubas had fought that war even with all the preponderance of weapons domiciled in Lagos and Ibadan, and the North advanced against your region in an act of war... I can bet my two kidneys right now that the entire Yoruba soldiers would have abandoned their defensive positions and fled to Benin Republic and Togo without firing a single shot. Let's tell ourselves the truth here.

brigadier ogundipe is a brave man for running away and giving himself exile when nobody was chasing him.
He's a brave man for dying in exile when nobody was chasing him.

OP you forgot the greatest of them all.

Awolowo.

When he was caught for planning a coup for a second time, exposed to IBB by his fellow Yorubas, Jakande in particular.
IBB gave Awolowo three options.

1. Go to life jail for treason.
2. Get killed in a firing squad
3. Go on exile.

Awolowo left all the above and took the coward way out. He took Otapiapia and ran away from life to avoid going to jail again for same offence he went to jail for in 1960s.

Awolowo was a coward who couldn't face the consequences of his own actions but chose to run away from them by taking his own life.

Bla, bla, bla. No proof.

Does that now changed the fact that ojukwu ran to Abidjan at night and Nnamdi kanu ran away too?

I am Ibibio, but to me Ojukwu had to do what he did because of the Northern progrom against innocent Eastern civilians and soldiers. The yorubas only stood watching as the Hausa soldiers kept killing their fellow southerners even in Yorubalands..Igbo people agreed to take up arms because more than halve of the population had lost either a relative or a friend in the North because of heeding to 'ONE NIGERIA'
Put it this way...if The Yorubas at that time, were killed in masses in igboland, would they ever have dreamt to be in a territorial relationship with the igbos anymore..NO!
Then why are people critisizing Ojukwu for taking a decision the all traditional rulers of Eastern Nigerian agreed upon..
I WOULD HAVE DONE SAME..ONE NIGERIA IS FAKE TILL DATE..

If a warrior know how to fight but don't know how to retreat.

Sorry and all the yorubas that were killed or imprisoned for aiding or hiding igbos their sacrifice Is to naught or they did not try to help the situation, or we did not beg ojukwu to stay his hand and look to a future? Shey today the military government is not gone? He thought he would be a military head till the end of time....at no point in his entire agitation not once did he call for a democracy for Nigeria as a whole or for biafra. But feel free to point to Yorubas and say we did nothing forgetting we have a saying "mà pamì mà pamì tobà ya á dì mà pà àrarè" meaning when we beg you not to kill us through your actions and you refuse to listen later we tell you not to kill yourself. ojukwu was warned but did not listen, did you now expect us to add another 3 million lives of our people to his? Or you think we came to this life to support your ego?

Every time you will see people here who say that Ojukwu ran away from war like a coward. I have come to believe that most of the people who say this are Yorubas. So I want to use this opportunity to remind Yorubas that while you say that Ojukwu ran away, your own leaders did the same. Here are three well known Yoruba leaders who ran out of Nigeria when they felt threatened.

Brigadier Ogundipe:- He was Chief of General Staff to General Ironsi and second in command in the administration. He became the highest ranking officer of the Nigerian Army when Ironsi was murdered. He should have been sworn in as next head of state. But he jumped into a ship and ran away to Cotonou, from where he made his way to London

Olusegun Obasanjo:- During the second coup of 1966, Major Obasanjo promptly abandoned his command, jumped into the booth of a car and was smuggled to Maiduguri from where he crossed the border and ran out of the country. He did not return until the dust settled

Bola Tinubu:- In the mid 1990's as General Abacha cracked down on pro-June 12th agitators, Bola Tinubu suddenly disappeared into thin air and resurfaced in London. He did not return to Nigeria until Abacha died to aspire to become Lagos State Governor.

Yorubas that never ran away but faced their fears

Victor Banjo refused to runaway

Mko Abiola was even given the choice of Exile

Awolowo even defended himself in court before being sentenced to ten years in prison

Obasanjo when Muritala was killed

Wole Soyinka was jailed and beaten by Obj and Gowon for supporting Biafra

Agami Eda Aka Fela even refused to runway when his mother was thrown from four storey building

Kudirat Abiola who was told several times to.escape.

And the list goes on

Can igbo give me the names of four people that stood against of for anything till the end?

Which war led to a whole set of people fleeing their ancestoral land before?

Not even Rawanda genocide

I meant individual who stood firm for what they believed till the last minute.

And Biafra had French on their side too.
