George Floyd Demise: Hypocrisy Or Sympathy? by GentleA(op):
On 8th June, 2019, in Minneapolis, a memorial service was held in honour of late George Floyd.

George’s corpse was accompanied by a motorcade, in a gold casket, worth over 1 million dollars (387,500,000.00 Naira).

Hundreds and hundreds of people including dignitaries and celebrities such as Kevin Hart; TI, Ludacris, Martin Luther King III, the Governor of Minnesota Tim Walz, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, and one-time Presidential candidate Senator Amy Klobuchar, et al.

They all came out in solidarity of the poor black man who was unjustly murdered, even breaching social distancing regulations.

His murderer Derek Chauvin, a policeman with over 19 years experience, faces three separate charges: unintentional second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, for which the maximum penalties are prison terms of 40, 25 and 10 years respectively.

However, in a Minneapolis Court, Judge Jeannice M Reding set a bail of $1.25m with no preconditions, or $1m with conditions that include Mr Chauvin not contacting Mr Floyd’s family, surrendering his firearms and not working in law enforcement or security as he awaits trial.

Today (9th June, 2020), his remains was laid to rest in Houston, Texas. George was given a stately burial, befitting even for an elderly statesman. He earned his last respect in grand style. Respect he probably never could afford in his lifetime.

According to reports, former world boxing champion Floyd Mayweather had requested to single-handedly pay for his funeral service.

Do you know that George set a world record even in his death?

According to TMZ, the site reported that the GoFundMe page set up for George Floyd has received the most individual donations ever recorded on the crowdsourcing website.

Donations were made by people from over 125 different countries around the world, according to a spokesperson for GoFundMe.

As of now, the GoFundMe page has received more than 479,000 donations and raised more than $13m, far surpassing its $1.5m goal.

A portion of the money will also go to the Estate of George Floyd for the benefit and care of his children and their educational fund.

Reports also has it that Kanye West has created a college fund for George Floyd’s daughter and has single-handedly made $2m additional donations.

George’s occupation as recorded on Wikipedia is a ‘truck driver and security guard’ and he is survived by 5 children amongst other family members, although there is just one identified daughter of his, and the only documented information of a woman in his life is a certain Courtney Ross, who ironically is a white woman.

According to Courtney, they both shared a dream of opening a restaurant called Convict Kitchen in Minneapolis, where they would hire only ex-convicts to give them the same second chance at life that he got. Ross dated Floyd for three years, and said the last thing he told her was, “I love you.”

I don’t know. I really don’t know what to feel. I don’t even know how to express what I think I feel.

Is this hypocrisy? An attempt to save face or actual sympathy?

George Floyd doesn't have a net worth. At least, it's not documented or his net worth is not worth documenting.

All of a sudden, his lifeless body has experienced the glamour, fame and wealth he could only fantasize or dream about.

I’m not undermining the humanitarian efforts made by well meaning individuals, but does one’s best dressed day have to be in a casket?

Does death have to be the ultimate price for love, care and concern?

When last did you sincerely tell someone “I love you?”

It could be the last they hear. It could be the last you say.

What is life if you live in oblivion, only to be globally recognized in death? What is life?

Will this just be another fad, soon passing away in no time?

What if you wake up tomorrow to the headlines of another black man being victimized by some white supremacist because of his skin colour?

Has George paid the ultimate sacrifice?

I hope we live long enough to find out.

George Floyd didn't pay the ultimate price of death....we will all die.
He payed the price of death in the hands of his fellow man surrounded by people who could have saved him, being choked to death pleading for help.
"I can't breathe"
What I see is sympathy that in such circumstances even if his life didn't spell glamour his death must stand for something.

I only hope things get better for the black man after this. Protests happen every other year and still things haven’t changed. Let me remain in my country and face bastard politicians rather than white people ready to kill me, tag me a criminal or monkey and lastly taxes so heavy that I take home less than half of my salary.
